This is sort of Grove Academy's recommended reading. What books do you guys think we'd appreciate? What are you currently reading?

Here you can discuss authors, books, and all sorts of things related to literature. Share with us those who inspired you. Everything from Poetry to Novels is a welcome subject for conversation.

At the moment, I'm re-reading the original Lord of the Rings series. Fantasy is my guilty pleasure. smile

I've also recently discovered Tad Williams, who is a sci-fi/fantasy author that's been writing since the 80s. I started out with the Shadowmarch series, which seemed classic fantasy, and just plain loved it. It's a bit of a tough read, but to me, that's fantastic, because I love a little challenge. Unfortunately, the third and fourth installments of that series won't be released until March of 2010, so I moved on to Otherland and afterward, wondered why in the world I liked Shadowmarch. Williams is just plain skilled.

You saying something about 80's and classic Fantasy made me remember one of my favorite authoresses, Anne McCaffrey. I still love the Dragonriders of Pern series. It's kinda sci-fi meets Fantasy. So lovely, because she's really put scientific thought and background into her stories. The Anthroplogy and geology are completely accurate also, she's just a wonderful writer.

My favorites of her series' are the Harper Hall trilogy (though mostly for the background characters since Menolly often comes off as a bit of a Mary-Sue to me) and the books about the days of AVIS and the destruction of the Red Star. Oh yes, those were good ones. Lessa is one of my favorite characters of all time. Such a strong female character, it's so beautiful.

My sixth grade science teacher introduced me to Anne McCaffrey with Dragonsong (Dragonsinger? I don't remember which was first). It was, ultimately, what interested me in fantasy.

Of all of McCaffrey's books, I must say the Rowan tops them off with a nice strawberry (because cherries are gross).

I've actually never read that one. I stick mostly to her Pern series and the Landing Trilogy. Though, I did read the Acorna thing she did with another authoress. It was good times. I love that mix of future-sciencey stuff and fantasy.

It does make for an interesting read, which is why I found Williams' Otherland so enticing.

Currently, I'm reading Don't Judge a Girl by Her Cover by Ally Carter from her Gallagher Girls series. Just finished Jim Butcher's newest installment of The Dresden Files, which I absolutely adore. Before that, I think I was reading The Van Halen Legacy by Melissa De La Cruz from her Blue Bloods series. I love her take on vampires as angels and such, it makes it very interesting.
