Okay, first of all I'm sooo happy they made a male character who doesn't look like some snot-nosed kid (Aladdin, I'm looking at you), and that they've made a more masculine character that isn't a douche (*cough*Gastong*cough*). Apparently the Incredibles is just what Disney-Pixar needed to kick themselves into gear. I've given some thought to Disney and males lately so they once again get the side eye.
@ Princess Z-M : Second, how is she like a "black Belle," her features look nothing like Belle's, well, not anymore than any of the other Disney girls. She has a clearly African-descented features face. What I find funny is that when she's drawn how she currently drawn then you say she looks like Belle, does that mean too white? And when she is drawn more "black"(for the sake of this sentence the character design is of a white girl coloured brown) then she looks like a pickninny. And what hair styles are you talking about, because from what I've seen she just has her hair out. What pictures are you talking about, I think I know but I just want to be on the same page.

apiyo @ Princess Z-M : Second, how is she like a "black Belle," her features look nothing like Belle's, well, not anymore than any of the other Disney girls. She has a clearly African-descented features face. Well here's let's have a look see: I wish I had photshop. Just so I could switch their hair and dresses. They all have the same face. Yes different skin tonew and hair to prove some difference but they all have the same face and same figure. Sure Mulan's eyes are slanted a bit and Jaz and Poca have fuller lips. Sill they all the same. In fact I think Princess T's boobs are smaller than the rest which for some folks that's culturally incorrect. (I'm indifferent as I'm not a ***** or anything like that) It's copypasta at it's worst. apiyo What I find funny is that when she's drawn how she currently drawn then you say she looks like Belle, does that mean too white? And when she is drawn more "black"(for the sake of this sentence the character design is of a white girl coloured brown) then she looks like a pickninny. There's a balance. You know how Marvel pretty much model Nick Fury after Sam. Jackson? Well why couldn't Disney pick a famous Black actress let's say Ms. Union or Ms. Basset and model a Princess after them? A nice rounder figure, nice full lips, wavy hair, and almond shaped or cat like eyes would have been acceptable. apiyo And what hair styles are you talking about, because from what I've seen she just has her hair out. What pictures are you talking about, I think I know but I just want to be on the same page. Can't find the concept art pictures. Disney has safely made sure they never see the light again. I'm sure they will press charges if they were leaked out as it would cause a big fuss I mean they would have to have sit down with NAACP and all that jazz. I mean it made sense granted at the time she was Princess Manny so yeah her hair was pretty much nappy ( it was kind of like how those babies look on the Proud family had there. You know she had the Mickey Mouse look two big puffs? Her lips were puffy and thick as well. Look she has been pretty much white-wash to appeal to the masses) As those original prints would have made everyone sick.

Princess Z-M Well here's let's have a look see: I wish I had photshop. I said, Tiana's "features look nothing like Belle's, well, not anymore than any of the other Disney girls." They all look pretty generic but it's it's not like she's singled out as a Belle clone. I'm not saying the others look distinguished, I'm saying Tiana isn't the only one who's generic, they ALL are cookie cutters so it's not "copypasta at it's worst" so much as Disney pumping out yet another Princess-Stormtrooper. And I find it insulting that a black woman drawn right is to have a "rounder" figure. Not all black women are required to have a cup size C and and gigantic butt. I guess I'm not really black now, that explains my lack of sensitivity. Princess Z-M a balance. So now it's okay to make a black person as long as it's from the mold of an existing black person society has already deemed acceptable? Ms. Union and Basset are not the only black women. Black people are diverse, too diverse to keep regurgitating the same mold. In fact the ENTIRE human species is so diverse that it's a shame that people keep pumping out the same stale images. Creating characters from thin air is such an exiting process that why should people be forced to pump out an animated Gabriel Union? Sorry, I kind of went on an artist's tangent. Also, the people who mentioned are kind of "older"in comparison to Tiana, so to do that would have created another infuriating young-woman-that-looks-way-older-than-she's-supposed-to-be. Let's try to keep character facts consistent. Also her lips are full, and she has regular black people features. Anyone who confuses her as anything but of sub-Saharan African descent is stupid. Also now would be a good time to bring up my pet peeve of animated characters who look like real people. I welcome Tiana's generic look compared to if she looked like Angela Basset. I think that if she looked like them, it would take away from her as her own character. Atleast as a Princess-Stormtrooper, with proper characterization, she stands as someone with her own identity, but if whe looked like those real black women, it would be hard to separate her from her real-life duplicate. That's why I had such a hard time watching Kung-Fu Panda, aside from some plot issues (which is another story). With actors you obviously have to look at the actor's real face but in a story with drawn made-up characters there's a break from the same actors being present, if only in appearance. Although I get sick of hearing the same voices so getting someone besides Beyonce to the her voice is also a sigh of relief. Princess Z-M find the concept art pictures. Look she has been pretty much white-wash to appeal to the masses) Okay, okay, so you say she's not black enough or whatever, but when they do have her looking black, she looks to pickninny, slavish or whatnot. Afro-textured hair is offensive? You have most exquisitely ran your entire argument into the ground. Why would her having nappy hair make the character design offensive? Most black people have afro-textured hair. Excuse me while I make a correction to your post: Princess Z-M those original prints would have made everyone who has a complex about African hair sick. The bottom line is that if you are anyone else has a problem with her hair being "too nappy" then you need to ask yourself why that is. And what's wrong with Mickey Mouse-like puffs. And you thought I'd get offended. Why in the world do black people think that stuff like that is pick-ninny like? is it because you think it infantilzes her (thus giving her automatic pic-ninny status), or is it just too slave-like? That's all the unenlightened, plaits-wearing little pic-ninny has say in this post or it will just tail-spin out of control and get on all kinds of tangents.

No I agree and yeah it's a nasty subject. Though out of all the princesses. T looks more like B. Out of all of them. I guess cause she's Afro-French no?
Well like I said there's a balance. I where the Mickey mouse puffs myself. My avatar kind of looks like me. (It's darker) However I understand the s**t-storm that having Princess T look like me would cause.
I only used Union and Bassest as an example. They don't have to be clones but it would be helpful if Disney had made a bit more changes in their concept art or did something really different this time. Like you I feel they keep dropping the ball and have this silly old safety zone they are afraid to come out of.
It's my problem with 21st century racism: We have all these faux-liberal people who claim to not be racist. So they take all these culture based cultures, they befriend people outside their culture, hell they might even marry outside their culture. However they still have all these little racist quirks about them.
Bottom line: you can do all that and still be a racist p***k. If you soley doing it just because you don't want to be a racist p***k. It's like that judge who didn't want to marry that interracial couple. He's not racist cause he has Black friends. Wait what? How does that make you less of a racist?
Disney is doing the same thing here. YAY they have a Black Princess however it's the same things as you said in your educated Disney post. She's going to be on a set track, the guy going to save her, and she gonna sing. (Along with some racist undertones I am so sure)
Basically we are in total agreement just using different tactics here. I'll still wait till the movie comes out though.

Hmm I just watch some in-depth Previews and it seems like they are breakin' the pattern a bit: seems like Princess T doesn't wait for her Prince to come to her, she goes to him, as she busy trying to start her own business, and she gets turned into a frog to boot. If all that's true kudos to Disney for using this opportunity to change some things around.
Like I said we will have better opinions once this movie is officially releases.

There won't be a black prince in Disney because it's a racist corperation that caters to the beliefs of the 'majority'. And in a sense most white parents don't want their daughters believing that it's alright to swept off their feet by a tall, dark, handsome black man.

I lol'd. @kay: For some reason, those concept drawings actually look better than how she came out to be. In fact, the princess look doesn't really do it for her. She needed something more classy. It's like how The Little Mermaid and Jasmine have their own unique costumes. It just fits.

These are actually pretty awesome! Like I feel like it adds more character and soul, and is really the median people were looking for. Granted if people really were that into it, they could change the name, just because it is 1950s -ish, unless it took place in that time period (idk I did not see it) but I never saw the problem. Its a movie you either watch it, or you do something else. kay2kay Original Princess "Maddy" Still called "Maddy" A revised concept for "Maddy" And finally princess Tiana

(Not sure if posted before but since I either saw it again or reposted this elsewhere)
This movie pretty much confirm all the reasons why I hate Disney so much. Half the ******** movie she's a frog and basically it's a standard Disney animated movie, lazy, predictable, and does have some liberal racist undertones or actually since its Disney overtones. All that changed was the skin color as I pretty much predicted in the first place. They really could have done something really different here but it's just like Little Mermaid faux race awareness with a unhealthy prince of faux feminist views thrown in. Oh look the first Princess (that I can think of) that actuall defeats the evil (black) villain while her Prince is macking on the white chick. Good job Disney good job. This is why I refuse to knowingly support you.

If the rest of the princes actually come from somewhere (Europe, China, etc) why couldn't we have an African prince? *disappointed*

Well the movie was decent it was what the people wanted a black princess in the disney princess line up. Because disney does have 3 other African black princess and 2 princes. a pair in Tarzan television show and another princess in the play Aida. Also a pair in the aladdin tv series. They are just not on the line up. No one wanted the prince because the princes dont really get much attention as the princesses do. Really the only prince you really remember is Aladdin. Eric to some degree. In any of the beauty and the beast movies belle never says beast name. And the people got what they wanted just the princess. And they couldn't go the Pocahontas race route since they knew disney would get alot of what they got making this movie. People complaining left and right no matter what they did. Tiana was given the job of a professional cook trying to get her own business in the twenties and people complained about it being sexist and what not. So they went the safe route and just made a heroine for the girls. The guy didn't matter or wasn't suppose to matter just the princess. And as for her time. She got alot of human time in her movie. More than some of other princess in the line up. Aurora and snow white were dead for most of the time in their movie. The movie was decent but nothing disney special about it. We just got tiana.
