So, I'm in the middle of the Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni series, and I was thinking to myself "Wow, I really like this anime, but when I'm done with this I hope I can find another anime as deep as this," and I thought, where better to ask for some anime advice than on the APG?

So, for some ideas, my favorite genre is the more serious and thought-provoking story lines. I do enjoy goofy ones too, but I go a little crazy if I don't get my fill of deep and intense anime.

Hell, while you're at it, list your favorite animes, I'd really like to see that. >3

Here are the animes that I have watched/am watching that I enjoyed:
~ Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni (I'm watching Kai now)
~ Ghost in the Shell (All movies + both TV series)
~ Serial Experiment Lain
~ FLCL
~ Haibane Renmei
~ Cowboy Bepop
~ Samurai Champloo
~ Gankutsuou - The Count of Monte Cristo
~ The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya
~ Ouran High School Host Club

I haven't been watching much anime lately... Hmm...

I really like X, it's really depressing but the characters are really lovable. It's kind of a cliche story, yet at the same time it really pulls you in.

Also, Loveless is really thought provoking and beautiful... Though it's a bit weird, and the anime is more like a gigantic commercial for the manga.

Go for the manga versions of LOVELESS and X. Much better than their animes. Also, there's also Higurashi.... ~Rei, an OVA series of it... There's also manga exclusive arcs to Higurashi- ones about Shion and other characters.

You'd get a kick out of Sayonara Zetsubou-sensei. Its on the lighter side, about a suicidal teacher and his class full of batshit students- including a stalker, a recluse, a girl who only communicates through abusive text messages, etc.

If you can find it, I ADORED Clover by CLAMP. Its unfinished, and got re-released in one large volume. I have the original printing. Its beautiful.

Chrono Crusade is my current obsession. <3

@Fini - My friend really loves X, so she's told me about it, but I have yet to see it yet. I should put that on my list.
And also @Bry since you both mention it, I have watched a little of Loveless and read the first couple of mangas. I definitely liked the manga better, but I've fallen behind on the series. I got more obsessed with Junjou Romantica... >3>

I'll look into Sayornara, it sounds interesting. And my school library has a copy of Clover so I read it and yes it was so awesome! >3< Horribly sad too, but beautiful. And I've heard of Chrono Crusade, but haven't looked into it yet. That's also being added to the list.

@Brother - ........My gut is telling me to beware whatever you suggest, but I'll add them to my list anyways.

I just done watching Code Geass and La Corda dOro Primo Passo.

Code Geass has become one of my all time favs now!
There's war between countries, giant mechs, a character for
anyone to love, and the main storyline is like...! Well let puts
it this way, for someone like me who's been watching anime for
well over 15 years I was even caught off guard and thrown for a loop!

La Corda dOro Primo Passo is a very sweet storyline. It's
got a boy harem but the girl isn't a flake! She's very likable and
so much about how she has to deal with her situation just pulls
at your heart. And almost every character plays a classical instrument!
It made me cry a few times also.

Apart from Ouran. I have no idea what the other animes mentioned are. sweatdrop

Um..letsee. I haven't been watching much myself really.

Hmmm serious and thought-provoking?

Noein (I think thats how it was spelt) was one that came up in my head.
-This one's kinda about, if there was different, say, dimention where in each one is the different possiblily of life's choice. E.g In one dimension, you decide to go out, then in a different dimension you decide to stay in. The outcome is different. etc. If that made sense >>

Another one, which is one that I recently finished is Tenpo Ibun Ayakashi Ayashi.
That's about, theres this other dimension (Umm....yea...I dont always watch stff with diff dimensions) which seems like...basically paradise. You dont have to worry about the problems of life. etc. But then some people think thats it's....kinda like satan which mislead you. And that there are so much more in life. Just that you may not think it so great.

Well, Tenpo is...nice but confusing. Its a historical era type anime. Whilst Noein is modern and um future I guess.

Oh! I love La Corda! It's very sweet. Wish there was a 2nd season....Or wish I could wish the manga...>>

Also Honey & Clover is a really umm...sweet I guess. It's very...fluffy. (A little too much for me. But just a suggestion.)

And if you like:
-Action/fighting? there's: Onmyou Taisenki, Law of Ueki, Flame of Recca, Katekyo Hitman Reborn.
-Magical girl type anime(Sometime I dont know why I watch it but eh.): Sugar Sugar Rune, Mermaid Melody Pichi Pichi, Ultra Maniac, Kamikaze Kaitou Jeanne
-Comedy: Tenshi na konamaiki

Ok Im gona stop now. Most of it probably way off from what you would want. lol

And Im suppose to do some work for my class in...an hour. Oops.

Sadly with my current hectic work sked..
i barely have enough time to go here at gaia..
how much more watch anime!

though i do read manga. >> i find it faster and easier.

one of my personal favorite mangas that has recently been adapted to anime is SKIP BEAT! i strongly suggest watching that.. >> then switch to MANGA! i really love it!

>> if you want to start reading manga.. i also suggest the following:

~ 1/2 prince (story based on a person playing as an opposite sex in a rpg game)
~ faster than a kiss (typical teacher-student relationship but still cute and funny)
~ kimi wa pet (a bit mature.. and about an older lady taking in a younger guy as a "pet" .. >> and no its not hentai~ish.. XD its really cool. there's also a Jdorama about it!)
~ until death do us part (want action? guns? a modern and suuper cool samurai on the heels of justice? this is the one for u! it also has mature content..)
~ Liar Game (if u liked deathnote.. it has a similar feeling but not as depressing.. psychological.. challenging.. and interesting!)
~ Bloody Monday (psychological.. nerdy/geek saves japan kind of story.. but its not cheesy. promise!)

>> obviously.. from this you can see that my current stress reliever and R&R antidote is manga. lol.

I actually agree with Auden's choices, those series are like awesome <3 Especially Mushishi, and something similar to it which is just as awesome (and has an interesting animation style) is Mononoke.

Then if you're still interested in something interesting I recommend you check out Natsume Yuujinchou and it's sequel Zoku Natsume Yuujinchou, the characterization is just so heart wrenching and sweet at worse, at best, well, I can't even begin to describe it.

And if you want more I have a bunch of stuff over at myanimelist.com xD

P.S. GANKUTSUOUUUUUUUU!!!!! <3 <3 <3 *high fives* I bought the whole series last summer and am still working my way through it biggrin

You might enjoy 'Twelve Kingdoms'. I warn you though: literally half of every episode is spent going over what happened last time, and you'll still be confused. But it's just interesting enough that you want to keep watching.

And everybody should know by now I can't post in an anime rec thread without mentioning the worlds greatest anime my personal favorite, YU YU HAKUSHO! Mostly silly, but there are some intense moments.(Espeacially in the 'Chapter Black' saga.)

I don't know if I'd call these 'thought provoking', but I've watched and enjoyed them.

Fruits Basket
Magic Knights Rayearth
Pretear
Princess Tutu
Inuyasha(one of the few popular anime I've bothered getting into sweatdrop )
Hellsing

*adds everyone's suggestions to her list*

@Kira - I've watched some episodes of Code Geass (when they were showing some of the episodes on On Demand), and I really liked it. But, whenever I watched it, I felt like it had this huge similarity to Death Note. However, I prefer Code Geass, because it's not as ridiculously sexist.

@Nwfan - I read some of Honey & Clover when I used to get Shojo Beat every month. I liked it, but I was getting frustrated with it because I was scared that the characters I wanted to be together weren't going to be together, so I stopped reading it for fear of being broken-hearted. Not to mention I distrust all shojo mangas ever since Nana....

@Kai-Sensei - I've read the first Skip Beat!, and I liked it, but as I mentioned above I distrust most shojo mangas. However, if you recommend it then I'll trust it. :3
And LOL my friend kept telling me to watch Kimi wa Pet but I totally forgot about it.

@Suteki - YEAH GANKUTSUO! *high fives back* I watched some of the first episodes after my friend showed me the first episode. I really need to watch more of it, it's so awesome! >3<
Ohhh....that website looks interesting, I might join it. I love reviewing stuff.

@Anon - Lol, I used to watch Yu Yu Hakusho when it was on Cartoon Network. My friend is also obsessed with it. And Fruits Basket was one of my first mangas/animes that I ever really got into. I finished the manga, and the anime, though the anime was horrid. D:
Magic Knights Rayearth was my very first manga that I ever owned. >3 I never watched the anime though, if there is one. And Hellsing is awesome, but I haven't finished it yet *quickly adds that to list before she forgets*
.....Princess Tutu............
I watched the whole series with my friends when we decided to have an anime day. We watched both seasons in one day, and I really liked it, until the last episode. That episode pissed me off so much that I threw a hissyfit and got mad at my friends for making we watch it only to be upset by the ending. DX

IKNORIGHT?! ;D The site's addicting, took me like a WEEK to find everything I read / watch and add it to the list, and I'm STILL not done >3>" Cause I still need to go through the Shonenjump/Shojobeat/Tokyopop lists to add THOSE that I've read to my list...>3>"

I want to start watching Basalisk, but I was hoping someone would get me the boxset for either my bday or Christmas (hint to all you people i know IRL)

But now i'm loving Fate Stay Night.... It had a really slow start though. and the main character got on my nerves till he grew a pair and started to really fight
