It was still raining. What little sunlight weakly struggled past the ever-present clouds could not reach her down in her cellar, so the passage of night and day remained unknown to her. As far as she was concerned, she lived in unending night, punctuated occasionally by noises from the floor above.

She had a memory of a home, and of a purpose, burning like little candles in her chest, wrestled carefully from others. Dreams came more freely than restful sleep, and somewhere someone was dreaming of a memory they did not want. She crept under beds and through dark passageways of dreams, bearing with her the sound of rushing water, towards the dreamer.

Another memory eaten would mean a tiny bit longer in life before she forgot even herself, and these brief, flickering candles were all she had.

She came into a room that seemed familiar, but not to her. The room was mostly wooden, but laden with rich fabrics and delicately made objects -- obviously the sign of someone rich, if not royalty. There were voices nearby.

Seung was hovering, clenching her hands on the roof tiles until the designs embedded into her palms. She knew she was dreaming, she always did now since she returned from Heaven. Not this one again... Once again she was battered by rage and shame and fear and was determined to confront Han-gyong this time while he plotted her death.

In this strange mixture of dream logic and lucidity, she knew he was dead and it wouldn't matter. But she knew she was bigger and she could actually do something about this problem instead of sitting back and playing the princess in distress. She launched off the roof intending to confront her erstwhile fiance but expecting to fly off to her own rooms like she always did in this dream.

Except she found herself going a different direction. Not Han-gyong's room, but the one next to it. She could still hear them planning her murder in the next room, but the room's occupant was enough of a puzzle to shock her out of her anger for a moment. Someone vaguely familliar, like an old classmate who's name you've forgotten. Someone who did not belong in Heaven. "What are you doing here?" she demanded, her anger at Han-gyong returning along with the frustration of being thwarted.

Very little could be seen of the unwanted specter, aside from that it obviously did not belong: it was a girlish figure in a dress shorter than Seung, with dark curly hair that faded into smoky tendrils at the ends. Its features were unremarkable and indistinct; its eyes reflected the light in the room and seemed both hollow and hungry. Its gaze was fixed on Seung, expectantly; Lethe waited but nothing resurfaced in her memories that would give her any clue as to who this beautiful young woman was. Distantly, jealousy stirred her guts.

"What are you doing here?" Came the warbly echo, as if Seung were leaning over a well and calling down it. "You do not want to be here. Nor would anyone want to go through this." It was a dream -- this was the only way to explain how the other ghost-girl could understand the language being spoken in the adjoining room. "You're strong, right? Powerful. Why do you still suffer? It seems beneath you."

Suddenly, and jerkily, it appeared to be approaching without moving its legs, gliding effortlessly along the floor and dripping water the entire way. "You do not want, so I will take," said Lethe, reaching for Seung with curled misty tendrils for fingers.

Seung jerked back, eyes widening as the misty fingers reached for her. "Power has nothing to do with it," she retorted. "I would not be here if I had the choice. And you should not be here at all."

The mothfish sidestepped, headed towards an ornate window. She pushed off into the air as she did so; it was faster to get away from that mist and avoid slipping in the water. "I do not want this, but you do not have the right to take."

Against logic, against the physical possibilities of the body to stretch, against whatever impression anyone had of Lethe's powers, the River Fa'e followed her; she did not fly, but her body -- more liquid than anything adhering to a formal bone structure -- twisted and blurred as she scratched and skittered her way up and around the walls of the room to continue following the mothfish fa'e. It was plain to see she meant to cut the other girl off at the window.

"What does 'what is right' matter to things like you and I? Or maybe you're nothing more than a dumb fish-bug girl who is of more use dead." Even fading would not dam Lethe's natural habit of verbosely letting words drip down her tongue.

She had reached the other wall and was posed, spider-like, over the opening of the window; she was not big enough to cover it entirely, and given the state of her body, it was likely that Seung could possibly push through her -- that it would be a good idea to still remained dubious. "You. Princess. You have beautiful hair and beautiful eyes -- " but this was said in the same voice of tone commonly employed to remark upon the deliciousness of meat -- "And people would do anything to save you. You will not miss one dream. Or are you too helpless to save someone else, to do anything but be saved?"
