`My Little p***s` @ankiannabar: The origins of Samhain are not evil or bad in any way. It literally means "Summers End" and was the Celtic New Year. It was the time of year when the dead was honored and the harvest began. It is indeed pagan in nature but so are many holidays celebrated today. Even Christmas owes itself to its pagan roots. Samhain's origins "Pride is the mother who is pregnant with all the other sins" That means humility is the greatest virtue. As I said I would, I am replying in the discussion forum ^^
I agree with you about Christmas. I believe that it is okay for a Christian to celebrate Easter and Christmas so long as they celebrate it as a Christian. Presents are not part of a Christian's Christmas. Nor are Christmas trees. As for Easter, eggs and bunnies have nothing to do with Christ's death and resurrection. If a Christian chooses to celebrate the Pagan half of those holidays, that's they're own decision. As for myself, I celebrate teh Christian half. Doing both should be out of the question as this confuses and misleads people. However, there's nothing wrong with having a spring fling or something like that.
As such, there is nothing wrong with having a harvest festival, however in doing so I couldn't understand dressing up, since it has nothing to do with harvests.
Halloween is considered a sacred day to those who practice voodoo, as well as to most Satanists and Wiccans. It is considered the day you can most stongly connect with the spirits. Thus, I do not celebrate it!
I hope this was clear!

Wiccans are nothing like satanists though. In fact our biggest law is the Wiccan Rede. This states that a wiccan cannot do anything that harms another being. This could be physical, mental, emotional etc. harm. And a wiccan would have nothing to do with evil spirits. A Wiccan can only practice good magick. Due to the slander of other religions and the horror industry, Wiccans have been batched together with Devil worshipers and the such. It is simply ignorance that has been passed down.

"Pride is the mother who is pregnant with all the other sins" That means humility is the greatest virtue. Well, I don't think that Wiccans are Satanists, but I do have a few Wiccan friends, which as you say only practice "good magic". However, in a Christian's eyes, there is no such thing as "good magic." So I still can't agree on that point XD
I do agree that they're often grouped with satanists and the like. And I don't believe I said anything about Wiccans contacting evil spirits? I just said spirits =P

By good, I mean magick that does not harm another in anyway. Believe me I know how Christians feel about magick. I just want it to be clear that I am not evil or unkind in anyway. My main goal in life is to help others as much as possible and to help bring peace and love to this world.

"Pride is the mother who is pregnant with all the other sins" That means humility is the greatest virtue. I wouldn't have judged your motives as bad simply because you're Wiccan! I hope I never made it seem otherwise.

This is probably a good thing I wasn't a part of this conversation when it was still fresh and going.
Not saying I'm against either side, just that I have a tendency to really get going when I start talking. (Case in point my post on the Obama issue.)
I just find it interesting how a discussion on Halloween, and why someone wouldn't celebrate it, or why they would...Turns into a debate on Christianity/Wiccan.
I am a Spiritualist. Which to ME consists of having no religion but believing in many different things. I believe in God, but I have a hard time with the Bible. (Which just thrills my Bible study leader to no end...-.-')
I've studied both Christianity, and Wicca. You both have valid points.
But I still don't see how a disscussion on why you would or wouldn't celebrate Halloween transcended into a religious debate.
I don't know, maybe I just haven't had enough caffiene yet this morning. Or maybe I just didn't get enough sleep last night...*Shrug.*
Again, probably a good thing I wasn't around when this conversation was actually going.

I'm getting a distinct feeling you guys are confusing Wicca with Neo-paganism.
'tis an easy mistake to make.

As for PhoenixHenkan's comment, the reason why it can be confused as a religious debate is because the reason why I don't celebrate Halloween is because of my religious beliefs." enter enter

Wicca is a fertility based neopagan religion.
If you meet someone who claims to be a Wiccan, chances are they aren't. It's quite a secretive group of people from what I understand, and all true practitioners can trace their teacher-student lineage back to the founder, Gerald Gardner, and his original coven.
Neopaganism is basically anything that's pagan and practised nowadays.
P.S: Satanism doesn't really have much to do with spirits. It's basically "Objectivism + Magic" (Or an extra pinch of douchebaggery depending on your specific kind of satanism)

All I can say is christmas trees are pretty and all, but what does a tree have to do with the holliday. Kind of like bunnies and rabbits on easter lol. Oh, and don't forget santa. All and all in fun, but not very correct. Too many cummercialized things, and relegions combined haha. (Tired so can't type...)
