I constantly find myself looking for one particular tone/sound one minute and another the next. I imagine I'm not the only one looking for a diverse tone.
So, here's what I propose...
Describe your EQ, effects (like reverb/chorus, whatever), pickups and what position they are in then describe the sound (or provide a sample) you get with it. Obviously all guitars are different and results may vary; however, I imagine this might be somewhat useful. A sound dictionary of sorts.
Right now, I am pursuing a really, really badass solo sound. The slow, more melodic and soulful (but distorted) badass solo type. You know what I'm talking about, and if you don't and give me something I was totally not expect, I may be in for a pleasant surprise. Got any suggestions? If none, then suggest a tone anyway.
Dont like the idea? Let the thread sink to the abyss. I thought it might be a cool and unique topic idea, though.

I cant really provide a sound sample at the moment, but I use two amps for my sound for the time being. One is my main amp, a 15w modeller from Behringer. I set my tone controls angus style (all at around 6 or 7, adjusting bass and trble a bit if I don't like the sound on a particular day). For the kind of tone i think your looking for, I get it by kicking to my Marshall model setting (with british speaker cab simulation), and kick up the overdrive to max. I set the volume to a fairly loud volume (it takes a bit of umph to get to this amp's sweet spot with this tone), and use the neck single coil on my Tele for a fat sweet sound. Sometimes Ill turn on my CryBaby and just leave it sitting at the middle position for some mid boost. I can get a pretty good Boston sound this way. But it makes chords sound not so good untill I turn the wah off.

I've been thinking about tone alot lately, and I'm considering going to a mainstream guitar shop with some guitaring friends soon to try out any guitar that takes our fancy.
: P
I'm curious to semi-hollows. I really want to try the Epi Dot Studio, and perhaps get some crazy pickups in there. Play it through a Metal Zone pedal, a little reverb and a phaser.
And, of course, the tonal god that is: Fender Strat. I think the kind of tone you're looking for is something like a Voodoo Child kinda thing. Whereas I would reccomend a 70's Strat and the Jimi Experience Pedal. Maybe throw a Vox in there too.
Yeah, I really want to experiment with any guitar possible right now.

Oh, and of course, welcome back. It's been a while, if I'm not mistaken.

wink Yea, it has. I probably going to be on Gaia with a bit more regularity again. I'm going to play around with some of those suggestions. Cool stuff.

It seems I can never find the tone I really want. Don't think I ever will either. The tone I want is to expensive. xd

I like to layer a couple of distortions into my amp distortion. Either that, or just one overdrive. When all the distortions are on, I really start to lose high end, so I switch to the bridge pickup on my guitar (96 Fender Jazzmaster reissue) which of course has enough treble to be really abrasive - thus, cuts through the distortion layers to what I call a sweet spot, though most guitarists (or audiences) might not dig it 100%. To simplify the layering process, I use a pedal suited for the job, the Electro-Harmonix Double Muff overdrive. When playing barefoot I can switch it to "single" and that gives me a Keith Richards/Mick Taylor overdrive sound if I need to sound like Exile on Main Street. The problem with switching over is that the bridge pickup pours out disgusting amounts of treble with this setup, so I prefer the neck pickup for this type of work (either with or without the secondary "rhythm" circuit, when the circuit's engaged, a deep jazzy tone emerges. Only suitable for heavy distortion if you want to sound like My Bloody Valentine, which is probably scientifically impossible).
With this kind of distortion, the Jazzmaster craps out fuzzy tones, sometimes dense, sometimes brittle. Nothing really sounds like it, though the playing on Wilco's A Ghost is Born album is similar. There's little middle ground with this guitar - the sound is either way mellow or extra-crispy. In order to get the full benefit of this setup, playing at normal show volume is recommended. Then one is introduced to the prospect of coaxing feedback out of the Jazzmaster, which can be annoyingly difficult but always worthwhile in the end. This is where a Gibson ES-345 would round out my setup, though I do need an ash-body Tele... maybe a Mustang with a hum between the two stock p/us...
I can't find a wah that I like. The only other effect that I use with any degree of regularity is the tremelo on my amp, 15w Vox Pathfinder. Tremelo is nice because no-one expects it, and it can add character to either a dirty or clean signal. Not good for most lead work though.
Key to my sound is the consumption of a few strong cocktails before I play. It adds a certain insouciance which can't really be duplicated. McEwans Scotch Ale is ideal for this purpose. Can't recommend it to everyone for obvious reasons.

I wind up swapping out pickups and everything else under the sun to get a different sound. I don't know whether I go looking for a particular sound or whether I go looking for a sound that captures me. The pickups on my JS have a decent sound to them, but I'm going to swap the out for one of the ones that i've already got and a new one entirely.
As far as my amp goes, I've got a little 15 watt Peavey rage which sounds good if I turn it up all the way on a clean setting and switch to the neck PU (soon to be a humbucker from hell). I'm looking to get a Fred from dimarzio in the bridge position sometime soon, and possibly a Boss Super Shifter pedal. I've wanted one of those for the last week something awful.

I normally use my 10 watt at low levels, thanks to the to the other people in the house, I tend to use my own presets ( on my rp50), one is a sort of vinatge mixed with hard rock distortion, ( or hard fuzz as I know it) and the other one used more is an industrial + vintage fuzz sound, both with lots of reverb... I also use lost of chorus for Mettalica stuff, and as for clean I normally use my fender tweed setting with a lot of reverb on the neck pu ( a single coil( btw the distortion are used with a humbucker, but I feel like blues soloing I turn of the tone and use the humbucker or the single coils)
My amp setting are normally
distortion
bass-5 Mid-5 treble-10 ( bridge humbucker)
clean
bass-2 mid 9 treble 10 ( neck single coil)
