I've recently watched the Anime based off of The Count of Monte Cristo, called Gankutsuo, and after this I was lent the movie [newer version], the two were remarkably different but I enjoyed them both very much for their portrayals of different sides to the same story. I am very interested now in reading the book [as I sadly have not].
Does anyone have anything like this that they've enjoyed recently?
The movie very easily climbed the ranks as one of my favorites!
Mike's favorite movies: A Tale of Two Sisters Kamikaze Girls The Emperor's New Groove! The Boy in the Striped Pajamas The Count of Monte Cristo [mentioned above] and many others
Favorite Books: Battle Royale Wicked The BFG Where the Sidewalk Ends Bone Walker Mirror Mirror Many more!

Well Black (the one I'm currently reading) is about a writer named Thomas Hunter who falls asleep and wakes up in a different world. The other world he wakes up to is perfect except for the Black Forest. That world refers to Earth as ancient history because the Raison Strain broke out and there was the Great Tribulation. But, when he falls asleep in that world, he goes back to Earth! And right after he is told about the Raison Strain, it comes up in the newspaper on Earth that Raison Pharmaceutical is starting an airborne vaccine. Mainly in the story, he is trying to use the other world to its advantage in order to save Earth from an impeding virus that could kill all people.
This Present Darkness is mainly about a fight between angels and demons on Earth while using people for it. The demons possess people with great authority on Earth to try and destroy all believers in God so that Satan can rule. Of course, the humans (except for the preacher, I forgot their names... sweatdrop ) don't know about the demons and angels. But, a preacher and police man just happen to meet each other when all hope is almost lost and they come up with a plan to bring the world back in order.
To tell you the truth, I don't remember much about the Keys to the Kingdom series because I haven't read it lately and my sister is borrowing the latest book and I still haven't read it yet! gonk
The Percy Jackson series is five books about the demi god Percy Jackson and his crazy, sarcastic, and hilarious adventures. His father was Posidon, the sea god and he goes to a camp for demi god children once it's found out that he's a demi god. Later in the series, they find out that Kronos (a Titan god) has came back from Tartarus and is trying to rule the world again. So, after a bit of things and mishaps, it's up the Percy to try to save the world.
They really are good books and I'll mostlikely read them again when I have time to. I only have about 150/400 pages left of Black till I'm finished and I really can't wait to see how that one turns out! biggrin
What are the books that you like about?

Hm they sound really interesting, especially Black, I would love to read it if I had it >.<
As for my books, the story of Bone Walker follows two different times, one being the present and the other the distant past. The present shows a team of excavationists studying an ancient people [i think the mayans or something.. it's been years since i read it] and i believe trying to solve a looong mystery, and the past is of the very people that are being studied in the future. i plan to re-read this book very soon as i think i will understand it more that i am older, but i really enjoyed the book, though it is very long.
Wicked is a very famous book following the life and times of the Wicked Witch of the West, Elphaba, before and during the period of Wizard of Oz. It's very in-depth book and to be honest I love it more than anything I've ever read, and I never liked the Wizard of Oz before. This book was made into a Broadway Musical but I hear it's completely different from the book, though the soundtrack sounds amazing biggrin If you are interested in her story, this book is awesome, and even if not it's so well written and captivating that you don't even remember it was based off of another story.
The BFG is a children's book I read in elementary school which in all honest holds as one of my favorites for nostalgic reasons. It's about a small orphan girl who is stolen from her room by a giant in the middle of the night, and taken to Giant Country, where she finds there are many fearsome and horrible Giants who eat people by the dozens every night. The giant she is with, however, is the Big Friendly Giant, the BFG, and well this leads to that and they eventually enlist the help of the Queen to save the world from the many evil Giants. It's a cute book for all ages and it's well written and unique, including the artwork.
Mirror Mirror is by the same author as Wicked [Gregory McGuire - my favorite author] and re-tells the story of Snow White, revealing much more about the Step-mother and her historical bases, and the father of Snow White, and his reasons for being absent throughout the story.
Where the Sidewalk Ends is also a children's book simply playing with the imagination of the world where the sidewalk ends... I really don't know any other way to describe it XD
The final one, my favorite! Battle Royale began as a Japanese novel but was translated into english and published here in the states. It follows one boy who's class is taken on a class trip, and actually ends up in a Battle Royale, classmates against one another where only one is allowed to survive and win. Each person is given a survival pack with a weapon and supplies, and each is wearing a collar to track movement and such. The main character, of course, is against killing his friends and makes a few companions alog the way, attempting to plan how to escape without only one survivor. It's a long book but my all time favorite one, it's very violent so it's not for the feint of heart, but al together a good read. This book was adapted into a Manga and a Live-Action movie, both very different but with the same basis. All meant to tell the tale in different ways, but all very good. I recommend the book before anything else though!
Sorry there was so much there to read, I can't keep things short these days XD

I know. It takes me almost a forever to finish reading a book until I'm at the last 100 pages. Nothing stops me at that point, not school, not time, not hunger, not tiredness, NOTHING!
Speaking of which, I just finished Black literally seconds ago. It ended at such a heart stopping spot! I must get my hands on the next one, Red!
I wonder if my friend already has it... eek

ahah well yes i count them as books biggrin those are all awesome choices ^_^ lately ive been reading many short manga stories, usually 15 chapters or less, i really like short stories and i dont really feel like committing lately to anything too long... or well maybe its that i am commited to alot of long ones that im waiting for updates on? XD
currently reading: Fairy Tale Nana One Piece [again] Shaman King [again] The Yellow Book Abara The Bride of the Water God Rave [xD gotta love it] and a few others i cant recall the names of D:
it would be easier if i listed my favorite mangka rather than manga, and ill put one of their works so maybe you will know them? so here: Kaori Yuki [Angel Sanctuary, Camelot, Boys Next Door, many many others] Ai Yazawa [Paradise Kiss, Nana] Fuyumi Soryo [Mars, and some others I cant name now...] Wataru Koshizumi [Marmalade Boy and [i beleive] Sold Out! and others...] Miwa Ueda [Peach Girl series] biggrin
sorry my memory is a bit hazy on some of them since a lot of them are short stories and not a very long read, i finished a lot of manga in only a day so the names dont stick only the stories...
