It had been an interesting enough lesson, out with the herdbeasts for a change to learn about choosing which to slaughter and how, but Kestra was glad it was over. She had time to kill between now and helping to prepare the evening meal and she intended to relax, see who was about to shoot the breeze with until then - beside her little gold firelizard Orla. Soon as she'd neared where she'd been sunning herself, Orla had came with a trilling sound to drape herself across Kestra's shoulders.
"Mind your claws, my Orla." She paused just long enough to give the little gold firelizard a moment to settle, raising her hands to both move the tugged at shoulderknot out of harms way and to affectionately stroke her scales to calm her. Soon as her eyes whirled a deep contented green, Kestra started moving again.
Now. To idle outside where there was a fine breeze blowing across the bowl or head back into the lower caverns and make her way to one of the recreation areas? Choices, choices...
((So out of practise with humans. XD SO.))

The women of the Weyr knew who Luci was, that much was certain. What they may not have assumed is that Luci knew who they were, too. She kept tabs on every female, and the closer they were to Impressing, the more keenly she watched them. The workers were observed from a distance, but the candidates were not so... Was the word 'lucky' or 'unfortunate'? The choice varied from person to person. Only time would tell what option Kestra would decide upon.
It was by chance that they encountered one another. Luci was on a mission to track down every able girl who had opportunity to Impress her beloved gold egg and submit them to a good cop-bad cop integration until they either backed down or proved they were woman enough to handle the future queen. Maybe she couldn't decide which dragonet Impressed who (a sharding shame it was), but she could still, how you say... influence the lottery of likely candidates.
Any other time, she'd been encouraging girls, not discouraging them. This was a special circumstance; Dorath was her dragon, and by default, those were "her" eggs. Her eggs--especially her queen--were not going to have anything but the best on the sands, and a certain Weyrleader's griping that they needed as many as possible didn't sway her enough to keep from conducting her investigation. (If they ran off, that was their choice, not hers. Hurray for loopholes.)
Most of the names were checked off the list by now. She looked up from the poor handwriting and at Kestra. --Hardly a gold candidate, but might as well while she was here.
"Hey, you, hold on." For a split second she spared a glance at the firelizard. Cute. But she was here on business, she reminded herself. "Are you going to the touching? Dorath says you're capable of Impressing and I'm making a list."

“Luci.” Kestra turned and greeted the other woman politely enough she hoped. Naturally she knew who she was. She’d be a dimglow not to recognise her Weyrwoman. And if she was honest, she was rather a fan besides. Involved in the goings on of her weyr, both Hold-born and an advocate for not just female riders – but female everythings – so yeah, Kestra was a fan, one of the young women of High Reaches who was fond of Luci even if she didn’t know her personally.
It wasn’t much of a choice to make in Kestra’s mind and not a chance of her running. She liked to think of herself as capable enough to do well whether as a cook or as a rider and had the confidence and drive to try for the latter. It was true she was not a girl who’d be able to Impress the young gold that was undoubtedly within the largest egg in the clutch, which was what Luci would undoubtedly be after this time. She lacked a /certain/ something that meant that even if she proved lucky enough to Impress, it’d never be to a gold - but there were other eggs and all colours were needed in the wings. It was an honour to be Searched.
“Who am I to disagree with Dorath? If I'm capable, I’d be glad to try on the sands.” She replied with a nod.

Outside, curled protectively around her future children, Dorath rumbled, followed soon by many other dragons in the Weyr. It was a sound that had been heard throughout the day, and now, Kestra had first hand knowledge as to it's source: the queen was giving her approval, pleased with the acceptance to perhaps Impress one of her offsping. Most queens would need to be held back to allow some their kin to wander away from them at the hatching. Dorath was an exception; even with instincts working against her calm personality, she was still reasonable enough to know what needed to be done.
"Great," Luci said, smiling wide. She examined Kestra closely from head to toe, then glanced out the window closest to them. The gesture was, in essence, a pointless one as Dorath was not within her sights even still. Dorath, ask the Weyrleader if he knows this girl, she requested, then gave as much of a detailed description as possible.
The gold had trouble keeping up with all the specifics, but relayed the message and had a prompt reply for Hers. He says it sounds like the loud girl, Kestra.
"Kestra, is it?" she asked for confirmation. There were so many candidates to keep track of, she didn't have time to keep tabs on the workers, too. That was Mr. Bronzerider's job, and to his credit, he did a good job of it. "I take inventory on all my candidates. Dorath's future kin are very important to the Weyr, as I'm sure you know."

“Yes, that’s me.” She nodded in response, a few whisps of dark hair escaping from her braid as she did so.
From her perch at Kestra’s shoulders Orla raised her wings a fraction and gave her own little rumble as the sound of the dragons reached them, as if adding her own approval. Kestra sent soothing thoughts to the firelizard to calm her even as she smiled herself. It was an exciting prospect to be a candidate. How could anyone ever say no to the chance…? Especially when the weyr, when Pern, /needed/ them to try. Her own excitement and admiration of the ‘riders aside, there were not enough dragons and riders and that was a big problem. Dragons and riders were the best and surefire way to fight the Thread that would start to fall within their lifetimes. They needed as many able pairs as they could get!
“ I know. I’d be surprised if there was a soul within the weyr or out of it who didn’t.” Kestra agreed and then thought for a moment before wondering if she should offer to find the Weyrwoman some klah. She herself was dying for a cup and Luci had probably been busy checking on candidates for a long while from the look of her list. Hmm. Maybe in a bit. Kestra felt rather relaxed though she'd never met her before it was true but then Cenla did always scold her for being too bold...trickey.

Luci was tireless in her efforts. Verifying Kestra's identity was putting a single piece in a large puzzle while hundreds more lay scattered in a pile on the table. A mountain of them as there were a mountain of candidates, all destined to put in their proper place given enough time. If life didn't give her that time, she would make. Wasn't she already?
"Good," she chirped. The feeling of something going unsaid didn't escape her. Those unspoken words were important. She recognized the feeling, but not the justification for it, and she knew it was better to be safe than sorry. A passing thought raised the question if Kestra's hesitation was caused by second thoughts on possibly being a rider. She looked so confident, though...
"While I'm here, is there anything else?"
