Regular books vs. graphic novels. I put this topic up because in my art appreciation class today, my teacher held up a graphic novel and said, "This isn't art, in fact it's not even a novel." I immediately felt a little insulted b/c I love reading graphic novels and I think that they have all the qualities that books have PLUS really cool pics for you to look at. So what do you think? Do you think that graphic novels are better, on the same level, or worse than regular novels? (btw: let's try to keep price out of this o.k? That's too easy of an argument and we could go back and forth on that all day. I'm talking about content.)

I have only read a few graphic novels. I can honestly say that I like my imagination better than someone elses in cases where characters and scenes are depicted.

That is insulting of your teacher to say because graphic novels combine art with words, it's the best of both worlds. It depends what mood I'm in, sometimes I want to visually see the story as it progresses and other times I'm perfectly happy with imagining everything in my head

Well books allow you to keep an active imagination, about the characters and the land and the places they visit. But graphic novels make it feel more realistic. Like, a lot of them take place in tokyo or japan in general. That's a place I would love to visit. It makes me feel more connected than a book ever would. And someone needs to slap your art teacher.

I think that it is a personal choice. Most novels can't hold some peoples attention long enough to completely finish reading one. Graphic novels not my personal fav. although my son would finish reading one of those before reading a real novel. Personally I think that if the story line is entertaining I don't see what the big deal is.
