So yeah the infamous Cleveland show started last night. I had two reports due today so I missed it but from what I have viewed on youtube and the like. It seems just like Family Guy only darker (color like) also looking at the view reviews on Tv.com and things like that most fans weren't all that impressed but Fox has already stated that it gets at least two seasons. So everyone hoping that it will be alright.

Personally I am not a fan of Seth McFarlane as I find his humor, animation, and story telling pretty bad and immature. Then again I never like that pushing button kind of humor. Granted I like the more crude intellect types.

but reading on the elements of the show it seems that at least the whole cast of the Black characters aren't all white (The guy that does Cleverland's voice is Mike Henry who is of course White} which had worried some people cause it does make you think "Isn't that pretty much like a minstrel show only animated?"

Same kind with Topic thunder last year? They couldn't find a Black guy to play a black guy? They had to get Robert D. Jr to act black? What was the humor in that and why is it okay nowadays?

Also what happen to the NAACP media complaints? I know back when I was a kid if any of the above had happen back in the 80's and early 90's the NAACP would had said something and the offenders would had to sit down and explain themselves or the show would get pulled. (See Homeboys in Outspace)

Personally I am not a true fan of the NAACP or censorship but it does make you wonder. What's the meaning for all the racial humor nowadays and is it really okay and harmless? Is it promotion said stereotypical concepts via humor or damning them?

In other words: Is Black-face and playing on racial stereotypes okay in the sense that by humor we see how ugly it really is? Or is just like Spike Lee's message was in Bamboozle in which "It's really the same sick tricks just done a bit differently?"

Is it less okay when white people attempt at mocking racial problems than Blacks do it? (Let's not forget The Boondocks and it's over use of the "N-Word" and crude view on satirical view on Black culture)

So what are your thoughts on Black culture in media, racial satirical humor, ect?

You know what I didnt see the cleveland show. But I kept on pondering the exact same thing when I heard about it. But I guess it's not getting alot of complaints because shows like family guy have gotten so many complaints about it. This is just something they see is not a problem. Because to them cleveland sounds good. In voicing it's not about race but how perfectly a voice fits the character.

The boundary line in comedy shows especially cartoon and sketch shows are very thin. Plus racial humor now isnt more accusing as it was back then. So thats where it gives it it's funny even though it still can hurts.(Not the word I'm looking for). People never complained when Dave chapelle or the wayans brothers did white face or when a black guy voices a japanese guy in anime. (The guy who voices jet in cowboy bebop is black and Issac haynes suprisingly voiced a few japanese anime characters.))

Alot of shows now all have racial counterparts. Like have you seen "The hills atlanta" it's basically the black version of the hills. So by complaining about the cleveland show. Your basically complaining about 90% of the stuff thats on tv and then you'll get complaints about how nothing is ever on. Half the stuff on BET should be complained about and they dont have white writers. but it's not.

Right that's why I'm not at all supportive of the NAACP. I mean how dare they give R.Kelly an image award and say shows like Housewives of ALT is wholesome? rolleyes

Seriously? That's not okay no matter who's doing it. EVER! I don't like either type of humor and I don't feel like 90% of the crap on TV needs to be viewed by people. The only reason people watch any of the crap is because it's shoved in their faces and there's little choice. I mean even TLC (The learning channel) shows nothing but reality shows. How is that educational at all?

I'm not a fan of the Wayne's I find their style of humor just gross, immature, and uncalled for. I feel MTV and BET are two channels that need to just be cut from my programming. Most of the time I have the channel blocked.

With voice acting I'm still on the fence since you are right it's about how well the person can act and I did check out the Cleveland show last week and it's pretty much what I thought it was. *shrugs* Thought I thought the son was skinny with ADHD? I don't understand the change then again it's Seth's humor.

I don't know I think everything is rather tasteless and I can see why now how it must upset my Grandmother seeing all this crap. Makes me wish they had the Nat King Cole show on Box-set.

Holy crap I did not know the Naacp did that.

But tv is the reason dave chapelle left his show. Watch his time on inside the actor studio. He explains how much the media gets away with and how far they go.

I have to admit I am a fan of the wayans, seth green and Mcfarlane. Even the south park guys. I was even a fan of carlos mencia for a while. But I am a fan that knows when something is taken a bit over the edge and knows they've gotten in trouble for alot of the things they said. Especially when the main characters start breaking the fourth wall and giving speeches to the public.

But you know what seth Mcfarlane wanted to do this show for the longest and he knew because he was white. The cleveland show wouldnt get as much acceptance. Hell it was kept hush hush for a while that kelsy grammer(fraiser) was the producer and writer of girlfriends. Black shows produced or written by white always seem to get attacked then the more offending ones that blacks themselves make.

As of good comic shows and cartoons there are still good ones on tv like scrubs. But it's very rare and a side effectof ADHD medicine is gaining weight. So thats why the son is big I guess. ( I saw trailer but not the show.))

A few comments for now: I have seen the show. Even though a white guy does Cleveland's voice, a black guy does the white redneck's voice, right? Also, Phil Lamar has done voices for a ton of different ethnicities on different shows.

And...I thought Tropic Thunder was hilarious! Having a white guy who wants to show he's the best actor ever by playing a black character is ridiculously hilarious! Besides, black people have been playing white characters for years, in movies like White Chicks, and sketch comedy chows like Mad TV.

Double agreed because their is a double standard within the media. When you think about it trash is trash no matter who is behind it. Wasn't a fan of g/f's either as I felt it was trying to hard to be like Sex In The City which was even more lame since we already had a black version that came out WAAAAY before called Living Single.

@ Passion_Dragon: thanks for the insight on T.T I have yet seen it so I was going off reviews and other 3rd party opinions.
