So yeah the infamous Cleveland show started last night. I had two reports due today so I missed it but from what I have viewed on youtube and the like. It seems just like Family Guy only darker (color like) also looking at the view reviews on Tv.com and things like that most fans weren't all that impressed but Fox has already stated that it gets at least two seasons. So everyone hoping that it will be alright.
Personally I am not a fan of Seth McFarlane as I find his humor, animation, and story telling pretty bad and immature. Then again I never like that pushing button kind of humor. Granted I like the more crude intellect types.
but reading on the elements of the show it seems that at least the whole cast of the Black characters aren't all white (The guy that does Cleverland's voice is Mike Henry who is of course White} which had worried some people cause it does make you think "Isn't that pretty much like a minstrel show only animated?"
Same kind with Topic thunder last year? They couldn't find a Black guy to play a black guy? They had to get Robert D. Jr to act black? What was the humor in that and why is it okay nowadays?
Also what happen to the NAACP media complaints? I know back when I was a kid if any of the above had happen back in the 80's and early 90's the NAACP would had said something and the offenders would had to sit down and explain themselves or the show would get pulled. (See Homeboys in Outspace)
Personally I am not a true fan of the NAACP or censorship but it does make you wonder. What's the meaning for all the racial humor nowadays and is it really okay and harmless? Is it promotion said stereotypical concepts via humor or damning them?
In other words: Is Black-face and playing on racial stereotypes okay in the sense that by humor we see how ugly it really is? Or is just like Spike Lee's message was in Bamboozle in which "It's really the same sick tricks just done a bit differently?"
Is it less okay when white people attempt at mocking racial problems than Blacks do it? (Let's not forget The Boondocks and it's over use of the "N-Word" and crude view on satirical view on Black culture)
So what are your thoughts on Black culture in media, racial satirical humor, ect?
