Apparently, tree-man was not that anxious to exonerate himself. There was a sound, above, of a door being shut, and dead-bolted. . . several times. But then there was a rustling in the leaves, and the man emerged from some unseen vestibule beneath them. He was stout, and short, a scant 4' tall, and gestured, hastily, for Marie to lead.

Barely able to keep her compose at his unique appearance method, Marie looked him up and down, deciding that he posed no real threat so long as she remained alert and not allow him to catch her by surprise again. She nodded and set off, following the slight signs of disturbed growth that went off to the left of where they had approached the area from. "She better be OK..."

Critters began to emerge from their lairs in the thickening night, all of them curious, and cuddly. . . so far. The glistening of their eyes punctuated the narrow path like the emergent stars in the dwindling patches of sky. The curious little hobbit seemed to saunter, while Marie progressed cautiously, but despite his own promises, he seemed no better prepared than she for anything. Not a fight, anyway, and not the appalling discovery they were about to make.

Even this one, which appeared before our sundry travellers, seemed tame enough, but it barred their way, and would not let them proceed to the bend by the creek where Marie was sure, for some reason, her friend would be found. They would move left, and the dog moved left, right, and the dog moved right. If they approached any closer, it would bristle, and snarl, like an animal twenty times its size, as if it imagined it could best these two fairly hearty opponents.

Gradually Maria came to understand that this dog is her lost friend, transformed by some sort of magic! The tree-dweller gazed upon her despair. Beyond the point where they stood, they would undoubtedly confront the feared necromancer himself.

In an amusing aside, the knobbly little man takes out a harmonica and renders "Fur Elise."

Looks at the shadow of the striker and notices that the shadow changes shape and becomes lighter.

Maybe it was out of defeat, or his slow fall into darkness as he pointed at the stack of pancakes on the table and said.... "You cheeseburger."
