I dunno what I do.. See, we have two AMAZING piano players trying out already, and I'm not that good of a piano player. I can read music, it just takes me a good while to learn a song, just depends on the song. And clarinet isn't in Jazz Band..
I was MAYBE thinking of taking up Trumpet or another instrument? Advice? Try out for piano anyways? Try a new instrument? Is there a bass clarinet in jazz band?

if you feel you won't do as well as the others on piano, i would suggest picking up a sax. take you pick of alto/tenor/bari. they are all usually guaranteed places in a jazz band. just remember not to play with a clarinet embouchure...a sax embouchure is "looser" than a clarinet embouchure. you still need to have a rock solid embouchure, you just can't keep your mouth super tight like you would on a clarinet.

The aforementioned bass, sax, and trumpet are all good ideas. I played trumpet, personally, but my jazz band had all of those instruments. What do you play? Do you play any orthodox band instruments already? They might be able to accomodate already - my jazz band had two flutes.

I tried to talk to my band director about including a clarinet, which is what I play, but he said no. I suggested learning another intrument and he just chuckled and told me to try out for the piano chair anyways.

I agree with Toco Clarinet. I picked up the tenor sax and the alto. Basically the only other differences between the clarinet and the tenor besides the embouchure is that the fingerings for one octave is basically the same as the next octave up, as far as I know. Granted, I only know two octaves worth of notes on the tenor... Anyway, that and the spacing of your fingers will be a lot wider.
For the alto, you'll also just have to realize that you're in a different key than you would be if you were playing the clarinet or the tenor. So, if they say 'play concert Bb' don't you dare play a C.

My advice if you don't make the band:
Are either of the piano players a senior?
Cause you could try working with one or both of them this year during the season. Try some of the songs they're playing with the band. It might be tough so watch/listen to them play and talk to them a lot. They might be able to show you how they work through songs when they practice on their own and help you get better.
Oh and the part about being a senior, if one of them won't be there next year, that leaves a spot open for you as an alternate/second piano player in next year's band. Some bands have two players who take turns playing songs or even duet sometimes. I know my band had two bass players, wasn't a problem. Who knows, if you work hard enough, you may even be the principle piano player biggrin
