I've actually been straying away from the manga for the last few months. *gasp*
When I was a kiddo I was totally a diehard Marvel fanboy. So when I started checking into western TPBs I went with what I originally knew and I fully admit to really enjoying
Cable & Deadpool and
Astonishing X-Men.
Somehow I picked up
The Authority simply because I was amused by the idea of Apollo and Midnighter (a gay couple partially based on Superman and Batman) and it actually turned into a favorite of mine. A group of superheroes who are actively seeking to create a better world, even if that world does not want it, really appealled to me.
I was curious about DC's new
Teen Titans series and I was pleasantly surprised how good it was. It is a totally different beast from the animated series in case you are curious. I picked up its cousin book
Outsiders which I frankly liked better with a slightly darker tone and the characters really played off of each other better. I also liked a team whose entire approach is to stop bad juju from even happening instead of responding when a crisis pops up. Now I'm trying out some of Keith Giffen & J.M. DeMatteis's Justice League stuff a shot because the idea of Blue Beetle and Booster Gold accidentally sending the Justice League to hell and having to play Twister to save their souls is undeniable to me.
DC Vertigo's
Fables series totally rocks my socks. Its a comic about your favorite fairy tales and legends who have long ago escaped their magical lands as they were taken over by a mysterious baddy called The Adversary and they are now residing in modern day New York. It sounds like the stupidiest idea ever but it is such a great read...
An example since I happen to have it uploaded to my webspace:
