I chose Chicago because of the obvious success it reaped (Best Picture, anyone?) and a) I don't know enough about Phantom (I saw the musical twice when I was 8 and 9, 10 years ago) to really compare and b) I know way too much about RENT so I'm pretty overly critical.
Wicked as a movie...I don't know. I have the feeling it would somehow be tied too closely to The Wizard of Oz. Which it should be, but I keep seeing...The Wizard of Oz 2. Only worse?
A Tim Burton-esque Wicked I could see being good, though. It'd definitely be darker that way, the way it needs to be.

Okay, I've seen the musical movies and I've got to say that I knew what to expect. They won't be as good as the actual shows, but when I see a musical movie, I just sort of wipe all knowledge of the stage show and just think "How was this as a movie?"
As a movie, "Phantom:" didn't like it much. The swordfighting scene was a little "Oh please." I also think they could've stood for a little better cinematography. It wasn't too visually interesting in my opinion. As a show, it rocked.
"Rent" was pretty good in my opinion. I think that the most important thing was that it pretty much stayed to Johnathon Larson's plot and idea. They made just super small changes... and they hardly left any bit out. I love the fact that they kept most of the original cast, and the new additions did extremely well, too. I think that "Mimi" has been Rosario's best preformance
"Wicked" as a movie... I agree, you'd have to expose the darker corners more than anything. Tim Burton would be perfect for that... I agree. Someone who can illuminate the humor and also keep the darker nature of the story. Also, I think he would do a terrific job making the Ozians just as odd... making spell scenes not too hokey. And the poor Wizard's songs would probably have to be cut... oh well! We love him anyway! heart

Actually to me, I think The Producers was the best one... but I picked Chicago for the gold... that and it was a really good one. I like Rent but I thought they could have done a bit more with the music... They took out some valuable songs I think... but it was still really good, but I feel that was the one they changed the most...

Next musical movie-
1st- Wicked 2nd- Les Mis 3rd- Dirty Rotten Scoundrels
Thats what I wanta see!
hmm basically I love the original broadway version of Rent. The movie was good and it took it out of the opera side of theatre, but the movie left out a lot and I know that was because of time and all but still there should have been more with Joann and Benny then what was shown. And def, Contact shouldve been in it! The movie would have been rated R but who cares!

I haven't seen the movie version of RENT but I really want to. Chicago was good. So far my favorite was Phantom of the Opera which I own. Now I must go watch it.

Wicked as a movie wouldn't work if you did it like Oz, because they're aimed at different audiences. In theater, you're expecting completely different SFX than on a movie.
I have a DVD of the original cast of Into The Woods and I must say it's filmed like a movie, with closeups and such.
Of the three recents, I liked Rent best. Phantom seemed a little too garish and chicago just isn't my favorite musical.

Didn't know where else to post this...but:
Has anyone else heard anything more about Jekyll & Hyde? I know that it was decided it was going to be a movie (and yes, a musical), but there hasn't been any other word on casting or filming or whatnot.

Well, I love Rent, of course, and I don't see the problem people have with the movie
Maybe it's because I didn't see it on stage, but I don't get it
I mean yeah, Rosario is no Daphne, but there aren't that many Daphne-caliber actresses around that are availiable to do a Rent movie.
Anyway, I didn't see Chicago or PotO, so I can't really comment on those : P

I preferred it in the opera side, although that would be odd on film The movie didn't really leave out that much plot, just songs that would be impossible to film (Christmas Bells) and some unnecesary numbers I agree that there should have been more stuff with Joanne and Benny, but it's not necesary What I do hate is how they took out most of Goodbye Love and Halloween I wouldn't have wanted Contact to have been in the movie, because I never would have been introduced to Rent, since my parents wouldn't have let me see it I mean sure, I may have listened to their Rent CD once, but it just wouldn't be the same And modern movie-goers don't usually understand symbolism, so they would think that Angel literally died having sex D; Or they wouldn't have gotten that Angel died at all
