I think it's close between Lina and Gourry.
Given that Lina can't handle much damage, and isn't a better swordsman than Gourry, she'd have to use spells, and if Gourry could get a hit in before she could cast anything (which is entirely likely) then she'd be toast.
That being said, if she could keep her distance she could pull off a better spell.
Since she can't multicast Ray Wing and casting from flying is out of the question, but she might be able to pull off levitation and a dragon slave like she did in episode one. (Or was it two?)
And in all honesty, she wouldn't have stood a chance against Hellmaster Phibrizzo, if he didn't need her to cast the dragon slave.
I think Hellmaster wins if it's a battle to the death. Those one hit kills where he doesn't even need to touch the enemy, just crush their soul thing, is pretty devastating. Lina is pretty badass and clever, but she'd never be able to beat an instant cast one hit KO non blockable/dodgeable attack from any range.
But since he was destroyed by The Lord of Nighmares, I think LoN would win if she could just get summoned or force her way in to the place where they're fighting.
So basically it goes
1) LoN 2) Hellmaster 3) Lina 4) Gourry
I picked Gourry last due to Lina's ingenuity during fights. She ALWAYS finds a way.

Anyway, I think I totally agree with you on those terms it's definitely: LoN, Hellmaster, Lina, and then Gourry. 3nodding

I think that Zel could probably beat Gourry because of his multiple abilites, however if Zel was limited to just swords it would be a lot harder for Zel but he could possibly win....
But IDK I am biased towards Zel
