U'tuhlroo was flopped out on the side, completely relaxed. She had found a protected spot in the grass, not too far from a warren entry, and was content just basking in the sun. She could see other rabbits silflaying on the down, but she had recently eaten wasn't very hungry right now. It was a comforting sight, however, since it told her that no elil was around. It wouldn't do to get too relaxed above ground, and her ears swivelled from time to time as she registered the sounds around her. She told herself she would soon make herself useful and stand watch for the ones eating, but the sun felt so nice...

To let down your guard too much could kill a rabbit sooner than they could say Homba, but what finally disturbed her restful state was nothing she could have imagined. She was not prepared.

User ImageAlthea nothing short of exploded from the warren, obviously angered and set on edge. Her ears rotated and flicked furiously as she started on her way to the accursed scrapes, and who in their right mind would send a marli on such a trip with an outskirter to watch her litter?! She ground her teeth furiously, the whole thing stunk worse than a homba. And how in the name of Frith was she supposed to even fit in the scrapes? Did anyone pause to ask that?

Sadly, she hadn't either until the eleventh hour, and now it was too late and Ginkgo was already on his miserable way to report this whole mess to Cocklebur. The imagined smirk on his proud face visibly made her cringe. Maybe she wasn't cut out for-

"Hraka! What in- why- YOU!"

Althea had nearly trampled over a doe lying in the grass near the warren's mouth. The owsla paused, wasting precious moments that she could all too well imagine Crow using to an evil end. Tucking her anger into check, she still glared down at the sandy doe. Ah, she remembered this one. The name at the moment was awash in her emotional state, but everything else was at least familiar.

"You're coming with me. No time to argue, high orders. You'll be back before fu-thanléao if you don't dally."

And with that Althea continued on her way, albeit a bit more careful not to step on any lounging does; simply expecting the doe to follow much like she assumed that outskirter and kitten would simply watch her litter.

The alternative was too unpleasant to think about.

U'tuhlroo had shut her eyes for a short moment, just a long blink really, but it was enough to make her miss Althea's sudden appearance. She only noticed when she was almost stepped on, never a pleasant experience.

"Hey," she protested before realising who had nearly trampled her. Instead of continuing the rant she had at the tip of her tongue she snapped her mouth shut with enough force to make her teeth click audibly. There was no mistaking the large dark doe and she was not about to talk back to this Owsla. Not when she was glaring at her like that at least. U'tuhlroo had to make an effort not to squirm under her gaze.

At the snapped command she scrambled to follow Althea, ears held low as she tried not to think about how this would most likely look. From the corner of her eyes she could see some turned heads and gleeful outskirters. Oh, ha ha. Great fun that an adult rabbit gets bossed around for once. They were well out of earshot of the silflaying rabbits when she finally spoke again, not able to contain her curiosity any longer.

"Err..." she started, trying to catch the Owsla's attention without sparking the anger she sensed boiling under the surface, "Where are we going?"

The large doe trudged along at a solid pace, debating what she would do to the missing kit if she found it. Come to think of it, Ginkgo hadn't given her much to go on. Not gender, or color, or anything. Though she supposed if there was anyone at the scrapes the details wouldn't matter so much. Last she heard they were still fairly off limits; out of respect for the dead and majorly out of fear of whatever killed them.

Eventually her anger slowly boiled down, now that she was on her paws and on the way there was really nothing more she could do. Behind her she could hear a rabbit following, and from smell and the light sounds of travel could tell it was the doe. Roo something or other. She really did have to work on remembering the warren members better, though her social skills on a whole had been lacking as of late. She was still a bit too wound up and a touch too proud to apologize, and opted to just continue on in silence. But that wasn't meant to be.

Her ears rotated to catch the doe's words, though she pressed on without pause.

"We're headed to the scrapes. A kitten was reported missing and the marli suspects that as the likely place of hiding. Since you seemed the right size to get underpaw, I figured you were also of right size to actually fit into the scrapes; as I obviously cannot."

She felt better for her own dry humor and allowed a slight grin, aware the doe wouldn't be able to see. Though it was only a moment after that she had a sobering thought; why hadn't the marli of the lost kitten been the one to have to leave her litter in the care of an outskirter? She knew the answer was in her title of Owsla, but it was still a vexing thought.

Missing kitten. U'tuhlroo frowned with disapproval, not sure if she should think the naughty kitten or the marli was more at fault. She didn't have much experience with kitten sitting but she figured that unless the litter was really huge it should be possible to intercept the litter tykes before they wandered off to the scrapes.

"Why did you have to go get it then," U'tuhlroo blurted before she could stop herself, "Err... I mean. Not that I mind helping. But there are at least some scrawny, wiry Owsla officers... Like that guy... Um..."

This didn't go very well, and U'tuhlroo really regretted opening her mouth in the first place. Everything she said seemed to dig a deeper hole for herself and hopefully she wouldn't get cuffed for calling Althea's fellow officers "scrawny". It was only a small relief that she had managed to stop herself before starting to name names.

"Because the only thing that runt is good at is kissing paws."

She mumbled softly to herself, her frustration and anger taking priority over her duties at the moment. She knew full well this was how talk and rumors got started, a pawful of misplaced words, but if anyone had been near her burrow this morning they'd have a whole mouthful to talk about today anyway. This was getting quite ugly and she swore to never have a litter again. As soon as this batch was able to make it on their own means she'd kick them out ears over tail.

She slowed her clip a bit, sniffing gingerly, and continued on the way with this new speed. Best to reserve some energy in case they had to sprint for their lives. She still hadn't answered the doe, but she was torn between the right answer and the truthful one.

"Are you aware that I had a litter not long ago?"

Her voice was much softer now, thinking while she spoke.

She could have sworn Althea had mumbled something to herself, but she couldn't quite catch what it was and it didn't seem like the right time to ask. She was slowly starting to relax and enjoy this trip, even if it had a serious purpose, and didn't want to say something to ruin the mood.

"Err... no," she said, not sure what she was supposed to do with this piece of information. There was usually hrair litters ranging from newborns to outskirters running amok in the warren, and U'tuhlroo honestly didn't keep track of them all. Should she? If her sister or any of her other close doe friends had a litter she would surely know, but she had missed this. Was it important to keep up with the litters of the owsla? Perhaps it was. U'tuhlroo might have a thing or two to learn about gossip.

"And they're outskirters now," she asked carefully, not sure if the marli in owsla divided their attention between their litters and their duties or if they focused on raising them until they became outskirters and old enough to learn to fend for themselves. Kittens might not need to be nursed and cared for all day long, but from the nature of their current mission it was obvious that bad things could happen if you left the more stupid kittens unsupervised for too long.
