Being around Lu'reni was much like having your face shoved in a gigantic bowl of sugarcane. Sure, it sounded like it might be an alright idea, but after a while you realized that you're probably going to die of sweetness-poisoning and you start flailing your arms and kicking and screaming and oh god oh god you're going to die and what if you never seeyourfamilyagainandohgodyouwillgetdiabetes!
Skelath craned his large head toward Alerea, giving her a judgmental sniff. Well, she didn't smell bad, so he didn't dislike her just yet. With blue eyes showing his apparent approval, Skelath nudged his rider with the side of his head; an action I'ver knew to mean 'scratch me scratch me oh geez im itchy scratch me.' The rider obliged with a wide grin that showed all the fondness and love that was so rarely expressed between the two of them in public. Truly, Skelath was quite a different creature around water. If I'ver so much as hugged him in public he would usually balk like a child whose mother was trying to clean his face with a napkin she'd spit on.
I'ver scratched along the dragon's jawline, and Skelath closed his inner lids and gave a low hum of approval, lying down on the shore. “Big baby,” he muttered, before turning his attention back to the two women, “So we are. I suppose Skelath just wanted us to match, so he decided to dump me in the lake.”
No, I wanted to hear Mine whine like a wherry.

Alerea was happy to meet Lu'reni, but she had to admit it was rather strange. The green rider before her was a little overwhelming, especially when the petite blond found herself being pulled closer in to what could have been a hug.
Now that was something she hadn't felt nor given in seemingly Turns. It wasn't that Alerea wasn't affectionate, hardly the case at all! But to be so open in public at Igen Weyr, with all its tough attitudes, gangs and general judgment meant that hugs were seemingly in short supply. Furthermore, being raised near the sea and with other seamen, fishermen and shipcrafters meant coddling wasn't exactly the norm. To find some one like Lu'reni, who might be open to affection, was . . . odd.
And a little much to take in all at once.
Still, she was a refreshing change if perhaps a little silly. But Alerea smiled happily up at her regardless, looking away from Lu to her very pretty green dragon. Even though the green dragon was significantly smaller than Skelath, she was still big in comparison to a person. To have two dragons within feet of her, Alerea couldn't help but cherish the moment.
It was very unlikely she'd be in such particular good company, draconic and rider alike, anytime soon. "Well it's a great pleasure to meet you, Lazulith," she addressed the green, trying not to feel rather awkward at the prospect of talking to a dragon. She'd never done it before and part of her wondered how much the dragons around her could 'hear' in her head. . .or what they thought of being addressed by others.
She wasn't afraid of the dragons, hardly, but she wasn't used to directly speaking to them either.
"And you as well, Skelath." She added too, offering a respectful bow to the great bronze. Glancing back to Lu'reni, the petite thing gave a little chuckle before adding, "I've been here a few sevendays before Ether Impressed. Unfortunately, this is the warmest welcome I've received from anyone so I quite thank you all." Her words were sincere, though not at all bitter or upset by what little Igen had offered her. Like those at her hold, she didn't need to be coddled . . . But a little friendliness never hurt anyone and was always welcome her way.

"It's a good day for a swim at least," she said, elbowing I'ver playfully. Water didn't just bring out the good spirits of her dragon; Lu was practically bubbling over with smiles. Lu'reni glanced back to Skelath, smiling, before directing her gaze back to her own dragon.
Lazulith wriggled her hindquarters deeper into the sand. She looks nice, the dragon mused, keeping her focus on the new face. After a moment, she bumped her rider. May I go swim again? Lu grinned and gave the dragon a slight push in response. In moments, Lazulith was chest deep in the water, swimming in circles and dipping her head in and out.
Wringing out the end of her braid, Lu'reni asked, "So, are you a Candidate then?" Some females came here to study crafts, but since Alerea mentioned the last Impression, Lu figured she might be seeking companionship with a dragon herself. "People warm up," she added, shrugging, even though that was really on half-true. Weyrling training had been an exercise in misery for her. There were many Hatchings in which no female riders Impressed at all; she was an unwanted anomaly. "You just have to stay positive, look for the good. It's there." Lu'reni was top notch at finding the good in people -- even when she received undeserved disrespect on a daily basis. She told herself that time would make her position more excepted; she hoped this girl might have the same good sense.

“Ether,” I'ver rolled his eyes, but kept his opinion of the Jr. Weyrling to himself. Another of the Weyrwoman's brood of children with issues of entitlement. It would be a shame if Alerea failed to impress a queen when Ether had managed to do so. I'ver idlt wondered whether or not someone had kicked that gold's egg before it had fully hardened.
Mine will not think ill of the young queen, Skelath rumbled, nudging his rider. For all his disagreement with weyr leadership, the bronze was as obedient of a queen's word as every dragon was obligated to be. Any ill words spoken of a queen were subject to his verbal wrath, even if he might let comments about her wishy washy rider slip by unpunished. I'ver smirked at Skelath's blind loyalty, but thought his halfhearted apology nevertheless.
“And those that don't warm up,” he shrugged, “Probably aren't worth caring two shards about anyways. The good is there in some of them.” The smile he gave Looney was pleasant enough, but there was a bit of sadness in it. Her ability to see the good in others often left her incapable for judging them as they really were; selfish, inconsiderate pricks, “Just don't let yourself get dragged into their games and you'll be fine.”

Alerea didn't know the newest Igen rider well, though she had crossed paths with her before the Hatching months before; being incredibly new, as well as a little overwhelmed by the change in scenery and lifestyle, the blond hadn't much time to truly get to know her peers. Of course, now settled and still without a bandanna or sworn loyalty to some gang or family, she hardly had any friends to speak of.
Though outwardly she claimed it didn't bother her one bit, it did get rather lonely. To have her fellow candidates look upon her with suspicion or ignore her completely (especially as those who did try to turn her failed to sway her) it didn't make for an easy lifestyle. Ah, but she was a seacrafter; she didn't need to be coddled and outwardly she did her best to keep face and her pride. Thankfully, there were enough chores and lessons to tend to that she hardly had much time to think about companionship of any sort. . .
But Igen was a tunnelsnake-eat-tunnelsnake kind of environment. Their climate was harsh, the rules were strict, and every man, woman and child was forced to be strong and independent. It was rather militant, really, and though women might be looked upon as weak or foolish, Alerea refused to let their politics and games turn her. She'd be as strong as the rest of them, thankyouverymuch, and she'd prove it too.
. . . hopefully.
Gold skin or green, Alerea had no preference. Queens were hatched few and far between so the likelihood was quite slim. Especially with how many females yearned and desired such hide. A fighting dragon might be well appropriate for her fighting spirit. . . . Who knew what the future might bring! Either way, the girl looked forward to the next clutch and was more than content to bide her time and be a thorn in all the gang's sides; not out of cruelty or maliciousness, no. . . but to smother them with kindness or a lack of reaction for their harassment.
"There are a few I talk to, now and again," she admitted with a small shrug. "But I don't let some attitudes of my peers get me down. As you say, there has to be some good in them no matter how hardened or twisted the games they play have made them. . ." Dragons didn't care for bullies, usually, or so she'd heard rumored. It seemed a little hit-or-miss with in Igen, unfortunately, as many candidates gobbled up the role of 'bully' and still walked away with a dragon of some colour. . .
But that gave her hope. There had to be goodness somewhere, even if it took months and turns upon turns of weeding through garbage to find. There was always a little bit of hope, but that was looking through rose-coloured glasses like the little optimist she could be.
"What doesn't kill you makes you stronger, so my father liked to preach. And as far as I see it, a little definition never hurt anyone."

Lu'reni knew quite well what it was like to be the object of scorn, even from those who were supposed to be her closest allies. Her weyrling training had been quite miserable, and she spent many nights hugging onto Lazulith and crying onto her hide. The dragon was much smaller then and an excellent cuddler, but the process grew old. Lu was strong, yes, but she was also sensitive. She wanted happiness and prosperity for all! Was that really so bad? At any rate, she assumed that the harassment would stop after her Impression -- who would dare question the word of a dragon? And yet they did, mostly from the metallics and the browns. She found most companionship in her fellows greens, perhaps because it was the hide color given the least respect. In a team, it was important to have all walks of life with all kinds of talent and responsibility. Couldn't those haughty bronzeriders see that?
Of course, Lu never said these things. There was enough darkness and cruel words being spoken in the Weyr. She did not need to add her voice to their number. Even more, Lu would never -- and had never -- complained of the treatment she received. It was all worth it to have Lazulith in her life. She had never felt so complete, so loved. At that thought, she reached out for Lazulith with her mind, focusing on the positive, bubbling energy of the dragon. In the water, Lazulith pumped her wings and then dove under the surface -- a dragon-version of the butterfly stroke, perhaps? It made the rider smile.
Like Skelath, Lu definitely did not believe in speaking ill of the new goldrider, but she didn't like to speak ill of anyone so it wasn't much of a stretch. She also did not rebuke I'ver at all for his comments, which she would have if she completely disagreed...
"I stood. I Impressed. There isn't much anyone can do to change that now." She smiled wider, as if this was some great loophole she had found in the system instead of simply being, well, what happened. "I believe you would make a great rider. So does Lazulith." The dragon popped up her head at the sound of her name, but went along with her rider's words. She liked most everybody so -- sure! Why not?
Now, if Alerea actually did Impress at some point, Lu'reni thought she might seek out the girl to warn her of the things to come -- of the tricks riders liked to play. Like releasing tunnelsnakes all in your Weyr... or swiping your riding gear... or dying all your white tunics pink... or peeing on your -- well, it was over now, right? Right! Immediately, Lu switched her mind back to more positive things, like the beautiful sun, the lapping of the water, and the company of two good people.

Mine, we will swim.
Not now. I'ver glanced at Skelath, who was already lifting himself up off of the warm sand.
“They fall in line after a while, anyways. Even the female blueriders eventually get some reprieve from the antagonizing.” Granted, that took several Turns, if not more, but it always happened eventually. Usually when a new female impressed a non-gold, at which point the focus would shift to tormenting the newbie instead. It was a vicious cycle, and the best a non-goldrider woman could hope for was that another woman would quickly impress after her.
Such was life at Igen, and despite his best efforts I'ver had learned there was little he could do to change the overall way that the Igen men thought. For now, at least.
Mine. We WILL swim. Skelath rumbled, sweeping his big tail around the humans present and attempting to sweep them into the water. There was little I'ver could do except give a surprised 'oof' and stumble unwillingly back into the lake. Skelath tromped in after him, ducking his head under the water once he'd pushed His in deep enough to scoop him up between his headknobs.
“Skelath says we are going swimming,” I'ver spluttered as he surfaced, unable to hold back a small laugh. The bronze laid his tail flat against the water for the other humans to use as a flotation device if they so desired. He couldn't just let them drown, after all, and humans could not swim as well as dragons. Well, maybe His could, but other humans were not like His. His was best.

With praise from not one but two riders, and two that seemed to genuinely mean what they said, Alerea felt both honored and humbled. She didn't want it to get to her head, not that she DID have much of an impressive ego, but it was nice to know she might possess some qualities to make it in Igen. She didn't except to Impress a queen, mind, but finding any dragon a suitable match was something she did hope for.
Then again, what Candidate didn't believe them capable of Impression? There was still a great mystery when it came to what attracted a dragon to a person, from personality traits favored to their child hood upbringing. No one could ever know, and as far as her teachings told her it was always the same; no matter how unlikely a match, the dragon always knows best. Quite vague, and Alerea still had no idea what to think or act like during an actual Hatching. The first one had been quite a blur, really, but hopefully she'd be better prepared for the next one.
For now, she'd stick it out and enjoy what time she was offered at the Weyr. There were good moments, not all were sour or harsh. . . like now. Meeting I'ver and Lu'reni truly was a good experience.
"Reprieve or not, you'd think they'd learn that women on fighting dragons can be worth their weight. . . Besides, with all the men on dragons, you'd think a few more females around might be a pleasant relief!" Her green eyes danced with wicked good humor, bemused by what her teachings had told her. If every green rider was male, wouldn't that displease the winning blue, brown or bronze winner's rider? Oh, but the two could take that in whatever context they wished. . .she wasn't saying anything, just that men might like women and more women might mean some happier men? Dragon rider or not. . .
Ah, but there were women at Igen. And if they weren't oggling every bronze rider or golden egg that came along, they were factioned with some group or giving their praises to another bronze riding family. And, if Alerea could remember any of her own upbringing, most men in her hold preferred a broken in lass. . one who kept her eyes down, mouth shut, and worked hard.
Needless to say, though Alerea was a great worker, she wasn't one to keep her mouth shut in any situation. Short as she might be, she was just as good as any one else, thankyouverymuch.
Being dragged in to the water, the girl gave a little chuckle of surprise. Swimming huh? Well, she had some time before evening meal and lessons. . . why not take a few? She was soaked enough already. Naturally a water baby, the girl did give a grin as she bobbed up from the surface after dipping underneath the bronze dragons tail. Peeking up from the other side, she gave a chuckle and added, "I think it's quite a charming idea, actually. A good way to avoid the heat of the afternoon, at any rate."

Lazulith paddled alongside Skelath, rolling over and over so that the streaked green of her belly showed. Then, in a sudden moment of inspiration, she flung herself forward, diving in and out of the water and singing, Look, I'm a dolphin! It was directed to both Lu'reni and Skelath, and the greenrider on shore beamed to see her dragon being such a free spirit.
Lu nodded along with chipper head bobs as Alerea spoke, flickering her happy gaze across all the faces on the shore. However, when Alerea made her innuendo, the petite greenrider flushed a particular hue of scarlet across her freckled cheeks. WHAT? DRAGONS DON'T RISE? RIGHT? "Lazulith beckons!" she blurted out, and then high tailed it into the water abruptly. Rising, the things that happened at rising, her being a girl -- yep, most certainly not on her list of Things to (EVER) Talk About! Her splash was nothing compared to her dragon's, but Lazulith slowed her movements, swimming over to scoop up her rider instead.
I did not call you, Mine-lu. You may continue talking to the others... if you wish? She rolled Lu on to one floating wing and then slowly waved it so that the girl bounced around. Lu just stroked her dragon's wing and submerged her face onto it, blowing bubbles. Lazulith let out contented giggles, her whole body vibrating, and suddenly, whatever had brought Lu running for the water was forgotten.
And it didn't matter anyway! Because I'ver and Alerea were out in the water now too. POOL PARTY!

I like this one. Skelath thought as Alerea spoke of the benefits of female riders.
Me too. I'ver grinned as he shared the sentiment.
“And that, my dear girl, is why Skelath doesn't chase greens. I don't know if you've seen some of those male green riders, but...” I'ver winced jokingly and patted the bronze's head fondly, holding tightly to one knob as Skelath tried to gently tip him back off into the water.
I do not chase greens because I am bronze. I am meant to chase queens.
“And for that I am thankful. I've no interest in playing Hide The Tunnesnake.”
