I had to rescue a filly I sold to a client, along with the client's 2 other horses, this week.

It's been 2 days since they got here. The first night they drank 1/2 the water trough down. I noticed when I p/them/u that the fillies were tied out w/o water. The grey was basicly doing w/e she wanted. There was a pond available to her. (It had steep sides, man made.) The filly drank her bucket down last night, she was in a stall. I watched her pee this AM and it was cloudy. They have free choice mineral (loose) and a salt lick. I'm going to watch the salt content and go from there, might add more salt to their feed if things don't clear up by the AM.

My filly is already filling out. I think the main problem with the horses is dehydration. They did have 24/7 grass at the owner's property. It wasn't quality and the fillies are growing/the grey needs more maintenance than sparse grass.

I cleaned the 2 fillies up yesterday morn. The pinto is 4 yrs old. She has no respect for personal space. She is very laid back and easy going though. She's never been in a trailer, clipped, stood tied, been in a stall - until she met me. She hasn't fussed a bit. Well, maybe a little at the clippers but that was just b/c she didn't want to stand still.

My Arab is 5. She remembered her maners all around. She let me clip, groom, load, tie, hold her feet w/o problems.

Now for the *slightly* bad news.

The horses feet were done on 9/12 by a farrier in the Lake City, FL area called "Cowboy". This is the farrier that has been caring for them for the past 2 yrs BTW.

I cleaned the grey mare up and this is what we found. Before you look, I did post these pics to a Farrier Only board and got positive, encouraging feedback. Remeber, we have an appt with the vet Sat. We will go from there.

I'll link you to all the pics we took last night of these feet.

3 of them look like this:

So far, everyone that has seen the pics says that there is hope for this horse.

She is NOT lame. ....I am beside myself with disgust right now.

On a happy note, I made the mares a nice big grass paddock where they can heal from halter rubs and learn to trust (come to the fence when they see me) again. I think they are starting to look good...the only one I'm worried about it the Pinto. She just seems to be here, not much of a personality yet.

I will update you guys again after we see the vet.

----everyone please know that if this horse was in pain I wouldn't be championing for her. I know she has a fighting chance at 100% recovery but it's going to take time. She is a nice mare that got a tough break.

Ohhh my! Both beautiful horses! But their feet... I have never seen a hoof like that in my life. Are you SURE the people were talking about the same farrier?

Yes, same farrier for the past 2 yrs.

I've been doing some research and think that *maybe* this horse has Selenium Toxicity.

Looking at the feet, there is most certainly hope! I've seen worse and I just ride and train. I would def. say watch his mineral intake. Most mineral blocks have added selenium which may be the cause of those feet. Not sure though. Have your farrier explain everything.

Se toxicity could cause the hoof sloughing. The bottoms don't look too bad though, the bars a very overgrown and need to be cut back. The heels look a bit under run too, but that might just be the angle the picture was taken from.

Sorry I've been too busy to sit down and write a complete update on the horses.

The horse owner met me at my farm and went to the vet's office with me Saturday. The vet did a complete check-up on the grey mare. He found that there is no medical reason for the mare to be as underweight as she is. She had 1 tooth that was slightly problematic. He took care of that. He gave the owner a list of feeds and protocol the owner needs to follow to get the mare back in health.

Owner said to find the young pinto mare a home. "Time Out" is helping me with that. The mare may be heading to a 5 ac pasture soon. The new owner understands the horse's conformation faults and has agreed that she is not a breeding candidate. She also understands that this horse is to be used as a pleasure mount only - she will not make an endurance horse. (Personaly -- I feel that she could be a cute 4H horse at some point.) The new owner just wants something pretty to look at and take care of. She has a barn full of hay - just got rid of cows b/c they were too much work to keep as "pets". T.O. and I will moniter the situation closely.

I traded my filly to T.O. b/c I know that she will have a great home. She'll be coming back here in 4-8 wks for saddle and cart training.

The grey mare --- things are a little bit up in the air right now. The owner did pay for feed to get us thru the next couple of weeks. She knows that winter is coming and that means more money for hay. She also knows that this horse will need to see the farrier ASAP and frequently. The owner has some personal & family medical issues to deal with. She was highly emotional. She knows that she has to make a decision but we're taking this one step at a time.

Here are some pics. Don't pic them apart, they are posted just FYI:

The grey, Kiss, is doing really well. Her owner decided to step up and board her here. She has been keeping up with paying for her feed and she comes out to ride about once a week. Here's a most recent pic of Kiss:

That grey is absolutely gorgeous!
She reminds me of my horse, just because of her face. (And the fact that they're both greys…)

I'm glad they're doing better!
