Can electric eels jump? I can't find out anything about it through searches, and I've read lots of stuff about them. Ever since I got bit by an aro (didn't hurt, just surprised me) I've been paranoid that all the fish are going to jump up and bite me. Of course, the worst of these would be the eel because if he did I'd be electrocuted. And it's like he knows that's what I'm worried about, because when he sees me he swims near to where I am and gives me a look. I know, I'm anthropomorphizing him, but I can't help it.

Good question. Considering they are airbreathers, they will come up to the surface on a fairly regular basis, but fish from low O2 environments seem to be rather sluggish, they don't do too much dashing around. I think they also seem to be a little more familiar with the surface of the water, they understand they are just trying to get their mouth out of the water, not their whole body. xp

I believe it is more likely that the arrowana came after your hand because that is how they hunt in the wild. He may have mistook your hand for a tasty bird on an overhanging limb. Yum. 3nodding If you weren't aware of their eating habits, see if you can find some videos of them launching out of the water to swallow something whole--it's bizarre! I think they are one of the only fish that purposefully lands terrestrial prey as a regular part of their diet, other than the spitting fish, of course.

Personally, I'd be much more concerned about being touched by the water an electric eel is in, rather than the eel itself! I've been shocked by voltage half as strong as what that fish is capable of, and it was not good. I even had a few heart murmurs for a few moments afterward! sweatdrop I'm actually surprised they are even legal to own, considering the fatalities from their shocks.

Oh yeah, I know why the aro bit me. I was feeding him. It just surprised me because he never did that before and I really wasn't expecting it. He's a mean little bugger and I'm more careful now when I feed that tank. My friend says they are a fan of leaping out of the water to eat birds =O Crazy stuff. I don't look forward to him growing up, especially since he already seems to have a mean streak.

But anyway, I don't think the EE will jump either, I'm just trying to find out if there are any instances where they have. I never touch the water either of the eels are in, [Big signs on both tanks "Caution: Electric Eel" and a pictureof a person being killed by an electric shock =P] But to get to some of the tanks above his tank, I have to stand on a ladder over it and he swims up to look at me and I get nervous, which of course is not a good thing because if you aren't focused on what you're doing you could fall or something you know? I guess I just want reassurance that he won't jump up and kill me. Also, he's pretty quick. Slow by no means.
