Alright, so here's my story. I've been playing clarinet since fourth grade, I started playing the alto sax at the end of last year along with the flute. I've also been playing acoustic guitar for a few years, and I'm currently taking classes on piano. My next goal? Join the jazz band.

Sadly, clarinets aren't allowed in our jazz band ("That's too English for Jazz Band. No." Go HERE to petition against it.) and there aren't any open spots for my next strongest instrument: the alto sax. Soo, a friend of mine and I asked our director about it and he said I could play the tenor sax.

The only issue is, I've never even touched a tenor sax, let alone play it. I also know nothing about jazz music:/ Does anyone have any advice? It can be about the music (Swing Fever), jazz scales, finding that swing...

Update: So the school's missing a sax. They know I didn't take it, or else I wouldn't have come down to the band room to ask about it. Our Jazz director is making phone calls to a couple of people and hopefully they'll find it.

Luckily, there was an extra at one of our elementary schools that I might be using tomorrow. I'm quite excited... But I really need advice...

Update (9/11/09): I played it today blaugh blaugh :big It sounded so pretty... Haha. I still need some work though.

Well, You say you have played the tenor sax and alto sax is BASICALLY the same as my teacher tells me and my jazz scale is:
G
B flat
C
C sharp
D
F sharp (i think)
High G

Actually, I'm going from the alto to the tenor.

Thanks...

that's because i don't think anyone going from alto to tenor SHOULD need advice. jazz isn't hard, as long as you understand that it's supposed to be smooth and laid back(mostly). if you want advice: there is no such thing as a "jazz scale". what that person was TRYING to show you was the BLUES scale, and it was only a Bb BLUES scale(concert Bb for the alto, which she/he plays, is G which is why the scale started on G)

the formula for the BLUES scale is: 1, flat 3, 4, flat 5, 5, 6, flat 7, 1[8].

on a tenor, the Bb BLUES scale would be: C, Eb, F, Gb, G, A, Bb, C.
(the scale she/he was trying to show was G, Bb, C, Db, D, E, F, G)

this formula can be applied to ANY instrument on ANY scale.

if you want to be able to swing, listen to jazz music. there is no better way to describe "swing". some people try to describe it as a "dotted-eighth then sixteenth", but that is way to strict. swing isn't supposed to be a definite thing.

enough advice for you?

also, anyone who thinks clarinets don't belong in jazz obviously doesn't know much about jazz. the whole point of jazz was that EVERYONE was able to participate. a famous jazz saxophonist, i don't remember the name right now, started gigging on the BANJO. if a BANJO can play jazz, a clarinet can.

Yes, that's quite enough. Thank you.

And try telling that to our jazz director.

i wish i could. i really wish i could. does your band director know of Benny Goodman? really good jazz-y-ish clarinet player. look him up on youtube and show him to your teacher.

I'd imagine he does. I certainly do.

You should join this: Jazz Clarinet Petition Group

If When we get enough members, I'm going to show him this in protest.

lol, i have nothing to protest.
i play sax in the jazz band, and if there's a part(which sometimes there is) i'll play clarinet.

Our BD is all, like, "It doesn't matter what instrument you paly, we'll take ya!" It's way cool. You should come to Pennfield now that you know that.
