Okay, so the Japanese Playstation Network put up Final Fantasy VII back in April with no English version on the horizon, so I went and got this. (yes, I know it's been released in English since then, but this was when it was first put out in Japan. There was no release date in sight back then for an English version) I've been having some issues and in a lot of places have had to start back from square one, but I'm trying to work on coming up with a translation guide as a means of studying and learning given that it is heavily text based.
I'm curious as to other people's opinions on this, similiar projects, etc.
I also have Metal Gear Solid (though that is a bit more difficult and not nearly as good of a game to translate) and Xenogears, which I've never had the opportunity to play in English.
And yes, it is possible to access the Japanese PSN from an NTSC or PAL PS3 or PSP. Find a tutorial on YouTube, they're on there, and then go onto eBay and buy a card. They're a little pricy, but if you're actually going to get some use out of this stuff, it's worth it. It's also fun because you can try demos for numerous Japanese games and boy are there some interesting ones.
Also, who would be interested in aiding me in my efforts? Perhaps we could make it a project of sorts ^_^

I haven't personally done this type of stuff myself, but I am definitely planning to. It's sad that they don't release some of the games in America, I'd buy them for sure. But I'll probably look at some Japanese games, possibly buy one after reading a review. Good luck with yours!

Yeah, I own both, and the original discs. I see this as an opportunity for learning, though, and I'm curious as to other people's opinions and if anyone wanted to join in. I'm starting with Materia lists, currently.
Also, the Japanese one is FFVII International and comes with a bonus disc called "FFVII Perfect Guide" which is super helpful.

Have you tried finding a "translation guide" on gamefaqs? Usually, you find them there when someone imports a game before it is released in America and they continuously update it until the game comes out here and then add what is different between the versions. However, FFVII was released quite a bit before gamefaqs existed I think.
Yes, it is possible to purchase Japanese PSN items on the American PS3. I still think movies are region locked, but with most PS3s (except for the slim they just released) you can play any region's games as long as you have a common element (you could play a Japanese game on a American PS3 because both are NTSC, but I don't think you can play a European PAL one).

I still think it's just a great learning experience period, as I'd pick up things in the language (including slang, although it's probably a little dated by now) and learn simply from playing one of my all time favourite games. Win-win, I say.

Apologies for the bump, I wanted to give an update on the status of this project though and allow others to join in.
-----
I have been unable to find a decent free domain for an actual website so in the meantime I'm using Wikia for this project, meaning anyone willing to pitch in can help with this extensive project aimed at assisting Japanese students to study and learn the language.
