Boys dressing up in lolita or kodona actually isn't all that rare. Most of them simply don't participate in the online communities as frequently as the girls do, because there's a bit of a bias against them. Many of those who are around don't speak up very often for fear of being unwelcome.
I'd recommend looking at our guild's FAQ and link list for some places to get inspiration, patterns or sewing advice. You can also check out our DIY section, there are a few topics pertaining to kodona there.
In particular, I'd suggest looking at drahtpuppe's coordinates on Daily Lolita for ideas. She's always incredibly well-dressed and almost always wears kodona or boystyle.
Kodona is honestly easier to pull off as fully off-brand than lolita is [unless you're an excellent seamstress, which most starting lolitas aren't; if you are, I mean no offense]. Converting commercial patterns isn't as difficult for kodona, either, since the style sticks quite a bit closer to its historical roots than lolita, so you shouldn't have too much trouble.
