This is the beauty of this great series. In my opinion, the GITS series and movies were brought over well and even dubbed in English well. I myself, am a person who prefers the Japanese voices but they just had a great cast, who I thought, fit well into the rolls of the characters with the rare exception of the Tachikoma. It didn't sound cute enough.

I think we lose quality in both cased. Dialog is translated to something different. In the case of subtitles, the words may be difficult to read, and often cover up artwork. The text is often poorly translated also. In the case of dubs, the words are easier to understand, but are often even farther off from the original words.
*sigh*
We all need to be able to understand Japanese and we should buy the JP releases...

I was re-watching the first season of stand alone complex with english audio and subtitles
They are completely different words XD
It seems, the subtitles are translations of the japanese script and the dubs are a completely new script, written to best keep the theme and message of the story. A scene that stands out in my mind is when Batou catches the android running away from them for some reason (I just remember he was wearing purple or something and he fried his own brain just before Batou cought him as a last resort). When Batou catches him, there is a zap and batou either says, "I think I broke him", "This can't be good", or something else depending on what translation you have. Although "This can't be good" may be the closest to the japanese version, "I think I broke him" definitely fits in better, especially since Batou has a big grin on his face to show that he is joking, not serious as "This can't be good" implies. Also, the dub, somwhat implies what the sub says in a more entertaining way.

Many anime series have really messed up translations, but Ghost In The Shell is an example of a VERY successful dub. I suggest, watching the LMF torrents, subbed, until you get a chance to buy the DVDs (SUPPORT GITS!) and watch them dubbed. If you can remember the Laughing Man Fansubs, the comparison can be quite interesting wink
