Aliases/Nicknames: Merely goes by James. No nickname yet, perhaps his peers will give him something worthwhile in the future.
Age: 19 in appearance, 23 years old total
Occupation: Student
Reiatsu color: Navy blue
Apperance: James stands at an even 6 feet, has smooth, tattoo and scar-free, lightly tanned skin, and has medium-length, thin silver-gray hair. He weighs in at about 180 pounds with a well built frame. His light blue, nearly gray eyes tend to have a sparkle of kindness in them at most times, but have been known to have a twinge of sadness when James has time alone to think about the past. Beneath his thin and straight nose is a nearly perfect smile in terms of straight teeth, but he doesn't smile much because he grew up needing braces for a really bad mouth and it just became a habit to keep his mouth closed unless he needed to talk. James isn't one to try to stand out from the crowd in terms of his clothing, and so wears the standard uniform of the academy; though he does keep a small red scarf that he keeps wrapped around his right arm in a helix from just below the elbow and tied off slightly above the wrist that reminds him of his little sister. James makes sure to take care of his grooming so he does look neat and clean on a day-to-day basis.

Personality: James is seen as a strong yet kind young guy. He is polite and respectful with authority figures and fairly friendly with people that he has no grudge against or other strong connections with. He grew up as the older brother to a sister about 4 years younger than him, so he has a natural desire to protect ladies including treating them well. Friends mean a lot to James and it shows; he is easy to get along with and so people tend to like him, but since he isn't quick to trust others, what few friends he becomes close with he does everything he can whenever they would need him to. He is quick to grasp new concepts and has the discipline to put in hard work where its necessary so in a classroom or dojo he tends to stand out as one of the top students.
Bio/History: James was the first child of a very loving pair of Christians who were high school sweethearts and got married in college. His parents ended up having him before they had graduated from college so his father joined the military to support the family and four years after that his younger sister was born. Things were happy for a while but soon James's father was called for a special mission overseas that left him changed and a slight drinking problem made itself known.
When James was fourteen, his mother died in a car accident during a stormy night. It was no one's fault really, just a combination of bad coincidences that paired up with fatal consequences. The fact that there was no one specific to be mad at really hit James's father hard, and the drinking only got worse leading to rather rather fierce beatings whenever the kids did something he didn't like when he was drunk. Over time, James began to resent his father and managed to convince his dad to let him take up karate. That was another bad combination that would explode a few years down the line.
When his sister was thirteen and starting to come into her womanhood, she looked almost exactly like her mother at that age, which grated on James's father each day. One day, their father got more drunk than usual and went into a rage, blaming his daughter for always teasing him with her looks. He started beating and stripping her which was the last straw for James who started brawling with him. Even though their father had a solid 50 pounds on James, because he was drunk to such a level, James was able to beat his dad back successfully escaping with only minor scratches and bruises. His dad was not going to take that and got his gun to silence his son once and for all. And so ended the life of James Garath.
Things quickly wrapped up after that as his sister had taked the time to call the police and ambulance near the end of the fighting. Their dad was arrested and she ended up going to a foster family that really cared for her. James stayed around to watch after his sister just long enough to see that she was going to be ok and then moved on to whatever was waiting for him in the next world.
In Soul Society, he quickly found that the rules were a bit different here. Time didn't move the same, which made sense as he and everyone else here were already "dead" in a way. Physics and biology didn't always apply as readily as he was used to; it really surprised him that people could go without eating, or rather didn't NEED to eat. He even found that karate he had learned on Earth wouldn't really protect him here and so stopped training with it.
After few years or so passed, things changed and he found himself hungry for the first time and learned that it was the signal of having some amount of reiatsu, a requirement to go to the Shinigami Academy. Looking for a place to really belong and hopefully excel, James applied and was accepted to the academy. Now he is looking forward at a potentially bright future in Soul Society as a future shinigami.

I just want to remind you that your character isn't supposed to remember his life in the world of the living. You didn't write anything that really suggest him knowing about his past, so I just wanted to make that clear.
