Igen: the land of heat, sand, and well... just heat and sand. A tough life has led Igen Weyr to become an extremely militant bunch, who must fight Thread with pinpoint accuracy lest they lose the faith of the Holds they protect. A dissatisfied Lord Holder could result in reduced tariffs, and the Weyr needs all the supplies they can get. Generation after generation has proven that a strong-willed goldrider and a host of able bronzeriders keeps the other colours in check, and under their iron rule the wings can function with maximum efficiency. Life is tough, but the Igen Weyrwoman is tougher, so the saying goes. This gold and bronze led system has led to the creation of entire bronzerider "families", where candidates and riders alike can trace their lineage back to a bronzerider who once held a position of power. Positions such as these are given out to those who have won the Weyrwoman's favour, and are often passed from father to son, or at the very least kept in the family. Entire bronzerider families can dominate a Weyr at one time, where all positions of power (Wingleaders, Candidatemaster, Weyrlingmaster) will go to relatives of the Weyrleader. Families make and break alliances in order to hold their positions, and while no actual fighting breaks out, the verbal slander can often be more than any one rider can bear.

These divisions have also led to a "gang" system among candidates, who pride themselves on the family they belong to or the cause they represent. The most powerful gang is headed by the son or daughter of the current Weyrwoman and Weyrleader, who seeks to continue the family tradition by Impressing a bronze or a gold. Among the other gangs, their reasons for wanting a metallic dragon may vary. Some gangs look to replace the current ruling family, while others may support the ruling family in hopes their own needs may be met. Whoever rules is entirely dependant which girl Impresses the queen, and to a certain extent, which bronze catches the gold. Gang rivalries are extremely fierce, but the rewards are well worth it if one of your members Impresses a metallic dragon. Leaders promise that all their followers will have the prime places in wings, and guarantee that their allegiance will be honoured when they are in charge. Until that time, gang members are expected to be absolutely loyal to their leaders, defend their territories, and always keep their bandannas visible.

At Igen, the gang system is a way of life, and all candidates are expected to abide by it. Weyrbred candidates will often grow up into a gang and continue to be considered a "friend" of the gang even if they do not Impress. Candidates who are Holdbred or from the crafthalls are allowed to join a gang once they have proven their usefulness. Any who refuse to join the system or speak out against it are frequently shunned and pushed around by gang members from all factions.

The current "Big Three" gangs are:

Rising Sun
Rising Sun is currently the faction with all the power. After E’ron’s Ioreth flew the Jr. Queen (and thus, had her removed), all the power sat with Thera and E’ron’s themselves and thus, their son holds all the power among the weyrbrats. Theron is fairly strict, as far as rulers come, and doesn’t allowed fraternization with the enemy. While sometimes contact can’t be avoided, he doesn’t want his group poisoned by other ideals. With the belief that the Weyr is already in good hands, Theron and his supports aim to get Theron into the seat of power and keep his sister, Ether, in a high position as well.

Their color is orange and all faction members must wear a bright orange bandana at all times. They control the main flit hunting ground and anyone caught on their sands will be dealt with seriously. Those who aren’t in other factions are allowed to come and hunt, but only for a price. The faction has to fund itself somehow, after all.

Theron is known for wall-scrawling and yes, he gets away with it. Why? Because his parents are in charge of the Weyr, which means they are in charge of the Candidatemaster, the Weyrlingmaster and the Headwoman and just because they have no problem throwing out unruly candidates doesn’t mean they’d toss their own son out. They have high hopes for Theron, after all.

Sandstorm
Sandstorm was recently joined by a smaller faction. Led by Iathe, they absorbed Alrain's faction when Ioreth ousted his father’s bronze and flew the Jr. Queen. Iathe remains in charge, but she works in close alliance with Alrain. They plan to Impress a gold and a bronze. Iathe, the Candidatemaster’s daughter, is positive she has what it takes to lead a Weyr, much more than whatever Ether has. With Iathe and Alrain in charge, Theron’s family would be ousted completely. Iathe firmly believes in allowing girls to ride green and blue dragons, and hopes to use that to appeal to the women of the Weyr.

Their color is purple and all faction members must identify themselves with a purple bandana. They control the sand coloring export and, as silly as it sounds, it actually fetches enough money to fund whatever the faction needs to do. While perhaps they don’t sound threatening, Iathe actually has the ability to oust any candidates, if she can convince her father they’ve done enough wrong.

Iathe and Theron are mortal enemies.

Flying Wherries
While the name probably started out as an insult, the gang members now look upon it with a strange sort of pride. The boys (and girls) of Flying Wherries don't have bronzerider or brownrider parents, or if they did, they've never been claimed by their fathers. They are also often the result of after Flight romps, and though they grow up among the Weyrbrats, most of them are not elite enough to join any of the gangs that hold real power. The gang was born when a "lowly" boy among them Impressed a bronze and went on to work his way into the favour of the current Weyrwoman. He only made it as far as Wingleader, but it was good enough for the candidates. Though they are often told that 'wherries will fly before a bronze chooses any of them' they stick to their guns and will fight tooth and nail to make their way to the top.

Often times candidates new to the Weyr join the gang believing that they are idealists and wish to abolish the gang system and spread the power around a little more. This is not true, as the Flying Wherries are quite happy with the current balance of power. They just want in it. All members, boys especially, aspire to be Weyrleaders, so they can take over and bring their own friends and family into the positions the gang believes they rightly deserve. Their current leader, Fanigan, stepped up to the plate after their last leader Impressed a green, a trend that has kept the Flying Wherries at the bottom of the totem pole.

The Flying Wherries are frequently the target of the other groups, and though they have a somewhat outcast status, they are the third "leading" gang. Their colour is scarlet, and members are given their first bandanna when they are old enough to swear allegiance to the cause. They frequently raid Rising Sun flit territory, and run underground trading of the eggs they manage to get, as well as taking bets on the colours of dragon eggs in a clutch.

The Neutral:
Not quite a faction, but not among the shunned, Neutral candidates take a firm stance that they are a part of their own "gang." Whether they want to be swayed, stay neutral because their parents feel the same, or are simply biding their time until someone else comes into power, those in the Neutral zone walk a dangerous path. They're not Shunned, but they're not faction members either, and as a result they are often treated with suspicion. Some factions seek to recruit the Neutrals early, while others consider them weak because they don't choose a side. Candidates in the Neutral Zone may wear a grey bandanna if they choose to, and do not have a leader. Neutral members may be allowed to mingle with faction members.
