The Business Card design competition got me thinking about a new logo for my company. Previously my sister who is an artist created it but I want to change it up. Where does one start in the idea process for formulation of a logo? I want to break away from the old look and I want it to be fresh. Since it seems a lot of you are artists/designers what do you do to get an idea started? eek

Thanks for the help and hopefully everyone can learn a little something from this.

Can we see the original logo?

Okay... I've never designed a logo before, but I do know what I like in a logo. If you look at some of the most recognisable logos:

They have a simple colour scheme, simple shapes, very visual as opposed to focussing on words (although Coke pulls off a word logo very well), so thats the kind of logo that to me would work best.

Btw, someone once told me that a guy was scribbling a weird tick shape in a Nike board meeting, and one of the head honchos saw it, and offered to buy it for $20. The guy gave it to him, happy to have made a few bucks from a scribble. Now its one of the most recognisable logos in the world xd

I've been working on a logo for myself, I'll show you guys once I get a proper version.

I'd rather not show the old logo just because I want something completely different. If you see the existing one it may skew ideas. I don't really want a logo made for me, just ideas on how to formulate the logo idea. From there it is just playing with it to make it look right. Simple color and shape. That's a start. Any other people out there with ideas?

Okay, here's my logo, if anyone is interested:

I'm sticking by my simple colour and shape thing - although now that I've been looking around at logos more, I have noticed some really nice ones that are complex. They would be harder to work with different mediums if they had to (for example, it would be more expensive to print on a tshirt, or if colours needed to be changed to suit a different colour background or something).

Mine is pink there (because I just did Valentine's Day commission), but its really easy to adapt to any colour I feel like. It is my first attempt at doing anything more complex than straight lines with the pen tool though, so the curves kinda suck xp

Ack, sorry dude, back to you and your logo... this is for your web design business I guess? Something that in some what reflects your business or personality would be good. Like the Nike tick just looks fast, the Adidas logo looks like a shoe, and the BMW logo... okay, well its supposed to be propellor blades from when they produced planes during the war time, but I guess it looks enough like a car's rims to make it work. Web design is something a little hard to reflect in a logo, so go with something that has more personal meaning for you maybe?

Try starting by writing down words that you think reflect you, or the feeling or thoughts that you want to convey through your logo. Then work from there. Works for me when I design sites 3nodding

^__^ my teachers always told me that one of the important things about a logo is that it should be able to be printed either in black and white or color and still look alright, since logos get put on the sides of boxes, envelopes, letterhead...etc...

as for where to start, start with what you do, make a list of things related to your company. think about the type of people that you usualy sell to, are they older bussiness people? then a traditional logo might be best, if they are young trendy teens, then something bright colored and a little more wild looking would be better. Also keep in mind that your logo should reflect you and your company in some way. if you are a very happy-go-lucky person who's company is all about saving kittens.. a sharp geometric logo or one with sharp block letters, might not be the best thing. something cute and maybe furry looking would work better ^___^ heart

if your audience is more femal, script lettering and softer shapes may appeal more to them, while if you have more male customers, something sharper and more angular might work best ^___^ heart

so in short what to think about:

- Who you are
- What the company does
- Buyer age, gender, etc..
- The image you want to portray

UPDATE:

I got a chance to stop in at Barnes and Noble and was perusing their graphic desin section. Lots and Lots of books on Logo Creation. Apparently it is a hard thing to do. I just browsed through them and got some ideas. There are some steps to follow but the books all just seemed to be full of pictures. I guess it is maybe just a spur of the moment thing.

I got some ideas though so hopefully I will be able to Photoshop it up in the next week or so.

Since there's a thread on logo creation, I figured I may as well post my new logo here... I was pretty happy with how it turned out.
