Parents are upset at President Obama
President accused of attempts to brainwash America's youth

User Image

On September 8, Parents were calling out President Obama on his speech, which was live on the White House website, as brainwashing American children.

The president said: "I'm going to be making a big speech to young people all across the country about the importance of education; about the importance of staying in school; how we want to improve our education system and why it’s so important for the country. So I hope everybody tunes in."

Secretary of Education Arne Duncan sent a letter to the nation's principals, inviting schools to watch the speech and even included suggested classroom activities and lesson plans. The chairman of the Republican Party of Florida, Jim Greer, stood up against the planned speech. He states:

"The address scheduled for September 8, 2009, does not allow for healthy debate on the President's agenda, but rather obligates the youngest children in our public school system to agree with our President's initiatives or be ostracized by their teachers and classmates."

It was only later that the real problem had to do with the accompanying lesson plans that went with the invitation to watch the speech. The lesson plan for pre-K through grade 6 suggests questions students think about during the speech, such as "What is the President trying to tell me? What is the President asking me to do?"

The lesson plan for grades 7-12 includes a "guided discussion," with suggested topics: "What resonated with you from President Obama's speech? What is President Obama inspiring you to do?"

The Cato Institute, a public-policy research foundation, issued a press release with the title "Hey Obama, Leave Those Kids Alone":

"It's one thing for a president to encourage all kids to work hard and stay in school – that's a reasonable use of the bully pulpit. It's another thing entirely, however, to have the U.S. Department of Education send detailed instructions to public schools nationwide on how to glorify the president and the presidency, and push them to drive social change."

A range of replies on President Obama's actions can be seen:

"I sent my children to school to be educated NOT indoctrinated." — justamom

"The fact that people want to keep their kids from hearing the President of the United States encourage them to do well in school shows a true level of ignorance." — Firefey

"As an [sic] 9th grade student, I'd like to say that 1. I'm not sure why everyone is so scared that we'll all be brainwashed by the President ... 2. My school is one that is not allowing us to watch the speech, and quite frankly, I'm pissed." — Willbw

One thing to consider is that schools are encouraged to air the speech, but not required to. The Houston Chronicle reports that one Dallas school district is leaving the decision to individual teachers. Susan Dacus, spokeswoman for the Wylie school district, says parents who don't want their children to see it can opt out.

However, one Missouri school won't be airing the speech because of a lack of funding. Michelle Baumstark, spokeswoman for Columbia public schools, told the Columbia Daily Tribune, "We don’t have the funding or the equipment to support that type of broadcasting.”

Firestorm Rages, Homeowners Stay
As fires roar through California, homeowners stay behind to defend their homes.

User Image

User ImageLos Angeles- In the early morning hours of late August, residents of a Los Angeles community called Tujuanga were awakened by sirens and evacuation calls. Many fled the flames and ashes, but people such as Mike Tarzian ignored the orders. "It's my house, I don't want anything to happen to it," said the 47-year-old film producer, whose wife and daughter left Monday to stay with friends. "I'd rather be here and leave at the last minute than down the hill not knowing what's happening."
Courtesy Of MSNBC

Many residents did the same thing. In one case, two men disobeyed the orders and remained in their home, until the flames were on their roof. The men then ran to a hot tub and stayed for hours. They suffered second to third-degree burns on their arms and legs. They are currently in stable condition.

"It was an extraordinarily difficult rescue," said Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department spokesman Steve Whitmore. "It took about 45 minutes and put everybody's lives at risk. If there is a mandatory evacuation order, it means you are in danger right now and get out."
Courtesy of MSNBC

As many homeowners stay behind, they do not realize the risk they are facing and how they endanger the lives of firefighters. This phenomonon occurs in every emergency. Situations like this caused a law in Texas to be put into action. In Texas, Police officers now have the right to arrest individuals who refuse to leave their homes when an emergency arises. "Sometimes it really is up to you to save your house," said Stachura, 45, who owns a theater. "It's not like people are standing around out here doing nothing."

In the aftershocks of this terrible disaster, a tsunami warning was issued for this area. This quake was nothing compared to the December 2004 temblor that rattled Indonesia and dozens of other countries and caused a powerful tsunami.

Coast Guard says it's not a Russian sub
A shocking image is not what it appears

User Image

User ImageNew Jersey The Russians are NOT coming. This is what the Coast Guard is saying. Well, at least not from New Jersey Shores. In this controversial photograph, the picture of a large object appears to be a large Russian Sub off the coast of New Jersey, but that is not the case. According to Jesse Ellison of the U.S Coast Guard, "The water in the area is far too shallow for a 575-foot long Soviet Typhoon, which requires a depth of nearly 40-feet just to stay afloat." In this case, it is impossible for a Russian sub to appear in Jersey Waters.

10 Good Second Careers to have

User Image

Here are 10 jobs with promising outlooks and could possibly be a second career:

1) Information Technology Manager

According to the Department of Labor Statistics, companies prefer candidates with an MBA and an emphasis in IT. Regardless of the type of MBA, Beecher advises splurging on the best school you can get into. "A degree from a pedigree school can deliver $150-200K per year after five years and that person can expect to earn that much for the rest of their [working] lives," says Beecher.
Median annual salary: $67,393

2) Registered Nurse

The career with the greatest expected increase in available jobs over the next seven years is registered nurse. Good in science, a compassionate nature, and like the idea of flexible hours, an RN degree may be your ticket to future employment. Not to be confused with LPNs or LVNs, it takes four years of education to obtain a bachelor of science in nursing or two to three years to receive and associate's degree from a community college. Either path can lead to an RN certification.
Median annual salary: $55,910

3) Software Developer

Great salary potential and employability, software developers may consider the area of "casual game" development. "One of the fastest growing segments in the gaming industry is casual gaming. Every month an estimated 200 million consumers play casual games online, many of whom do not normally regard themselves as gamers or fans of video games," says Henry DeVries, director of communications at UC San Diego Extended Studies and Public Programs. UC San Diego offers an extension program for casual gaming education to assist graphic artists and programmers.
Median annual salary: $70,834

4) Gaming Manager

This title refers to managers in casinos. Gaming manager jobs are expected increase by 24.4 percent by 2016, according to the BLS. This career path requires a specific effort to gain experience in the gaming industry, knowledge of casino regulations, and the general operations. An associate or bachelor's degree is not mandatory.
Median annual salary: $48,000

5) Environmental Engineer

There are different areas of specialty you can focus on and this field is greatly increasing especially with our atmosphere worsening. For example, "Environmental engineers study the environmental impact of a proposed construction project, analyze data and assess the extent of possible harm to the environment. As a result of their evaluation, they may recommend that the construction plans be altered to minimize potential harm," reports Alice Ramey, economist at the Office of Occupational Statistics and Employment Projections, Bureau of Labor Statistics.
Median annual salary: $61,440

6) Pharmacist

Already have a bachelor's degree? Prerequisites for pharmacy school? A few more years in school can offer an excellent return on your investment. This is one of two careers where PayScale data showed an increase in salary over the last six months.
Median annual salary: $98,232

7) Financial Advisor

Financial advisors help people make decisions about where to invest their money to help them enhance the quality of their lives. Some training programs exist that do not require a college degree, but the Bureau of Labor Statistics says a bachelor's or graduate degree offers the best prospects both in terms of employment opportunities and higher salaries. With prospects for jobs to increase by 41 percent, this is one to check out.
Median annual salary: $59,979

8 ) Licensed Physical Therapist

27 percent growth expected by 2016, licensed physical therapy is another graduate degree program with promise of jobs in the future and excellent compensation. Most programs require a master's or doctorate-level degree.
Median annual salary: $64,322

9) Paralegal

Job prospects for paralegals are expected to rise 22 percent by 2016. According to the BLS, part of this growth may be attributed to paralegals gaining responsibility and performing more tasks once commonly done by lawyers. If you like responsibility, can work under pressure, and have an eye for detail, a career as a paralegal may be for you. Paralegal education is available as a certificate, post-graduate program, associate, bachelor's and master's degree, or some companies may even teach you on the job.
Median annual salary: $44,751.

10) Social Worker

22 percent growth projected, a career as a social worker can begin with a bachelor's degree in sociology or social work. With a variety of potential work environments, ranging from schools to rescue shelters, part-time and full-time job opportunities are expected to increase over the next eight years.
Median annual salary: $40,986

Hyperspace drive is offline!
Request for lightspeed travel declined, say scientists

We’ve all seen Star Wars, right? Han Solo jumps into the Millennium Falcon with Chewbacca then punches it to light speed. The stars seem to stretch out and blur past, and then the Millennium Falcon disappears from view. A lot of science fiction, Star Wars, Star Trek, and Battlestar Galactica, for example, use many high-tech gadgets and travel around the universe at the speed of light or faster. So, is traveling at that speed or even faster possible in the very distant future? Or do other means need to be used to get around? It’s time to debunk your favorite movies!

The short answer is no, you can’t travel at the speed of light. It is impossible for anything with weight to go that fast or faster. It’s against the law of physics. Much like trying to divide by zero, just like your algebra teacher says, you just can’t do it. As your speed increases your weight increases as well. Imagine someone tossing a tennis ball at you and having it hit you, not too painful or heavy right? Now imagine that same ball speeding at you at 70 miles per hour, it would feel a lot heavier, like getting hit by a steel ball. Because your mass increases as you go faster, at the speed of light your mass would become infinite. Therefore you would need an infinite amount of energy to propel your infinite weight that fast. Unfortunately there is no power source that has in infinite amount of energy to give.

You also see spaceships in science fiction movies come to a complete stop almost instantaneously. If this were to actually happen you would be smashed. Since you have so much momentum it would be very hard or impossible to stop yourself. Think of a train, because it is going so fast and has a heavy mass it takes longer to slow down than say a car going at a slower speed because it is lighter and slower.

In the future it is possible that we will find a way to travel near speed of light. But not everything is as simple as the movies, traveling even at near speed of light would bring up a set of new issues. If you travel at such a speed then time will slow down for you compared to the time on earth. You know how when you’re sitting in algebra, the clock seems to tick by really slowly, but when you are with your friends sitting at lunch it seems to go by quickly? Even though it seems time goes by slower you know it’s actually not. However when you are traveling at near speed of light, time actually does go slower for you!

Since time is slower for you than the people on Earth, you will age more slowly. For example, if you had a friend who was the same age as you and this friend stayed on Earth while you traveled to a distant planet, you would come back to find your friend older than you. Even though it feels like time hasn’t slowed down for you, it has, compared to your friend’s clock, one year for you might be 5 years for your friend or Earth time. This idea is not portrayed in movies where the traveler goes off to remote parts of the universe and comes back to find everyone aged at the same rate as him.

Even though movies like Star Wars make it seem like space travel seem possible, you now know that speed of light travel is impossible. Don’t, however, discount other methods of space travel. Another mode of space travel that can be utilized, if and when we get the proper technology, is black holes.
Two connected black holes are called a worm hole and is a cause of great debate among the science community. Its existence is only theoretical at this point, because it would take the energy of a large star to keep a worm hole open. A worm hole is basically like a tunnel that is also a short cut to another part of the universe and if there is not enough energy, the tunnel will collapse. If we could find a way to go through a worm hole without being stretched into strings of spaghetti, or create our own worm holes, we could travel the universe a lot faster or even travel to other or parallel universes. Another interesting thing about worm holes is it can connect us to different periods of time. In the recent Star Trek movie the bad guys in the movie, the Romulans travel back in time using a worm hole. If worm holes do exist, time travel could actually be possible.

There are many different theories and ideas about time and space travel. Many of the ideas portrayed in the media are likely not going to happen. But science is always gathering new data and discovering new ideas. Who knows, maybe 1000 years from now there will be a safe way to travel across the universe and through time, and the ideas in science fiction will not just be words in a book or a scene in a movie but actual reality.

Dracula Fact or Fiction?
Cruel prince thought of as vampire

User Image

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.Vlad Tepes, a 15th centery prince more commonly known as Vlad the Impaler. He was first crowned prince of as Wallachia, Romania at the age of seventeen in 1448. He didn’t rule for as long as most people because of his assassanation. He was known as the impaler because of his cruel punishments and torture againest people. Many romanians think of him as a savior to their nation. However, In the English-speaking world, Vlad III is perhaps most commonly known for inspiring the name of the vampire in Bram Stoker's 1897 novel Dracula.

Although in a recent study it was found like Bram had no knowledge of the prince except for a short friendship with a man who may or may not have mention the princes name once and that Bram had never been to ether of the prince’s castles.

However the connections between the fictional Dracula and Vlad are undeniable. Vlad Tepes name was Vlad III Dracula. Dracula is an old Romanian word meaning “Son of the dragon” or “Son of the demon”. Both the character and the prince lived in Romania.

Another point of similarity came with the wooden stake that when plunged into a vampire’s heart will turn them to dust, killing them instantly. Vlad Tepes would, in wars taking living soldiers, tie them to horses and impale them in their backside with a wooden stake, forcing it through the soldier’s body until coming out through their mouths quite some time later finally ending the torture.

One show of character happened when Vlad went after a rival prince one day. The prince ran to get away and hid in a village. However Vlad sent an army after him showing him no mercy to the helpful folks. Thousands were impaled in front of their town gates; all charged with sheltering the enemy prince even though some of them did nothing of the sort. When the prince was finally out of hiding and everything had been drained from him, the soldiers dragged him over to an open grave. He was forced to proclaim his end as they murdered him on the spot and pushed his body into the dirt. Although they searched the area not too long ago and found no remains the story still has some form of truth to it.

The views on this man are different depending on the person. A lot of Romanian’s today still like of him as one of their best leaders to date while most people outside of Romania think of him as a cruel man who impaled millions, mostly for the reason that they chose not to agree with him.

Is this the end? The debate over whether Vlad III Dracula was/is a vampire still rages to this day. Was he really the person who Bram Stoker based the monster Dracula off of? Which ever the truth is I doubt we’ll ever know.

Old Whitby Psychiatric Hospital
Is truly haunted, or is it just another ghost story?

User Image

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.
What started out to be a quiet little hospital for the people who needed mental health care has turned out to be one of most seen tourist attractions in Whitby, Ontario, Canada.

It started as a small little hospital in 1911. It was built to replace a similar hospital in Toronto. It was one of the nicest places which treated most patients as equals. They were kept in little cottages by the lake to keep a home-like setting. There were also many tunnels connecting many different buildings. At its peak there were over 1650 patients, especially when a lot of advancements in medical technology occurred.

When the numbers started to drop in the ‘70s they decided that they should build a new hospital although the operation didn’t occur until 1993. They finally closed down the old hospital in 1995 as the new hospital was completed.

Ever since the old hospital closed down many people have fled to the site to see what is supposed to be spirits. While there many people have seen “orbs” in which are supposedly the spirits there are also many people who say it’s just balls of light, nothing more. One person reportedly took pictures of a tunnel and found faces watching her every move.

One former employee
There are a lot of strange things that happened to many of the staff members which was not talked about outside to other people. I've met many ghosts, one was in the building where the Library was, most people call it the school.

This Building was never a school it was the max Security House, that is why the stairway had bars blocking the way up from the third floor up. You needed a key to use the elevator to go passed the second floor.

One Night ,one of the other Guard's called me over the radio and asked me the get up to the roof fast. So I got up there fast where I saw the Guard Talking to someone on the edge of the roof. The Guard told me the Patient was going to jump and he tried to stopped her.
When we both asked her to come of the edge she was gone. We both looked over the edge and saw nothing. We then went down stairs and outside and walked around the building but we found nothing.

The next day we found out that a girl jumped from the roof in 1968 before the stairs were locked up. Mary was 16 and jumped to her death. I was told when she hit the ground by the front steps she left blood all over the stairs, which could never be completely removed.
I personally saw the outline of blood on the stairs.

Many rumors have been told over the years about the tunnels under ground like vampires entering the tunnels to drink blood from the blood bank, and the homeless making their homes in the basements as well as all the ghost stories themselves. The vampires and homeless people stories are false; however ghosts have never been proven.

There are reports of little boys and girls been seen and heard playing in certain rooms but it was never proven to be true. As well as reports of many people killing themselves since there are no accessible records of many deaths there.

The Whitby Psychiatric Hospital was torn down in August of 2005 to make room for new homes to be built. Although the tunnels still remain it is impossible to go into them since it was found to have asbestos and there are no ways down there anymore. I guess we’ll never truly get to find out if it really was haunted or not.

Criticism

This month, I visted a little place called Cafe Au Lait. This art store features a variety of art styles created by its 3 owners, DarklingShift, Pandagrass, ALiCeLiCiOUS. As I looked around, I was captivated by the elegance and the fine detail they put into each of their masterpieces, if you wish to call it that. Every stroke was carefully created to perfection and possibly inspiring others. Finally, I had decided on ordering a headshot from Alice after fiddling with the many choices for at least half an hour. In a matter of days, my portrait was finished! I was very excited and tense at the time, questioning if I should have even purchased art, but it was worth it. My order turned out splendid. The hair, the eyes, and just everything about it was absolutely perfect! It completely matched my avatar. After a while, I had decided to view Darkling's and Panda's samples. Then again, I was overwhelmed by the beauty. Suddenly, I felt the urge to buy more, but it was too late. The slots were filled (Next time, I'll make sure to get a slot). If you are looking in investing a sum of gold, the art industry is the perfect place. In fact, Cafe Au Lait has something for everyone! Whether it's a chibi or headshot, you'll find it at Cafe Au Lait. Until next time!

To Wear or not Wear: Halloween Costumes

User Image

There is something in the air that is making us feel like Halloween is here. It might be the natural cycle of the earth moving from Summer to Fall in September, it might be the spooky symbols that characterize this festivity and begin to appear what makes think of Halloween fun, but the time for Halloween costumes is here.

Some people believe that Halloween is for children, but this celebration is similar to Christmas, time when all the family join to enjoy together food and fun. No matter the season of the year or the date to celebrate, if you remember the child that lives inside you. Single people have fun organizing Halloween parties and it is a common activity organize Halloween costumes context in which it is a person's originality the winner.

Of course, children enjoy Halloween costumes and many of them like to design their own rather that buy one or get their parents choosing such costumes. Someone said that the real Halloween nightmare begins when a parent wants his or her children wear the costume they will like to wear rather than the one their kids want.

Adults must not be shy. There are adult costumes that fulfill their dreams to enjoy like children through the night when the witches fly. In addition, not only witches, but also vampires and Jack-o-lantern. The tradition of carved pumpkins comes from the Irish folklore and the story related to Jack of the Lantern and his encounter with the devil.

All these spooky legends and tales are best enjoyed with a slice of pumpkin pie in hand and a great Halloween costume to celebrate at home or go out along with the children during their trick-or-treating activity. Kids of course enjoy going in Halloween costumes door to door to play a trick to each homeowner that refuses to give them a treat, usually candies, cookies and other confectionery.

For children the idea of Halloween costumes can be quite different from that in our adult mind so while some children enjoy disguising as pumpkin, mommies or monsters, others prefers to become a comic hero or fairy for the night. According to statistics, about 93% of American children plan to go trick-or-treating so get ready to help them with their costume if you have kids at home.

Although there are not rules that prevent adults and children enjoy wearing costumes the Halloween night while being at home, visiting their neighborhood or friends and family, there might be a few exceptions when it comes to Halloween costumes. Some people take Halloween celebrations as the right time to visit themed parks such as Disney World and a few others.

Themed parks are certainly an incredible attraction to experience the Halloween atmosphere. Even though, and due to each park's rules, you may find trouble with admission if you go there wearing a Halloween costume.

Never wear these terrible Halloween costumes

Picking a Halloween costume is both exciting and challenging. On one hand you are given total freedom to dress however you want, but at the same time, the pressure to come up with a brilliant costume idea can end up a disaster if done incorrectly. Also, a number of people couldn’t care less about Halloween costumes, neglecting to brainstorm on possibilities and then doing some last-minute costume-building that leads to a disguise gone terribly wrong. If you’re one of these people, you’ve probably had your share of embarrassing Halloween moments and frowns upon your bad costume. This year, it’s time to finally avoid looking like a cheap, badly done, and just-in-time creation by scratching these terrible Halloween costume ideas off your list.

Clown and Ghost

Not only are the clown and ghost costumes the most used and unoriginal ideas you can sport, they’re also the most characterless and least functional. If you’re dressed as a clown, wouldn’t it be difficult to eat and drink with all that make-up and lipstick? And the big shoes will probably get you into trouble after you kick people’s shins or step on their feet, whether intentionally or not.

As for the ghost costume, the idea is wrong on so many levels. First and foremost, the big white sheet can become a tangled mess, forcing you to constantly rearrange the material so that the cut-out holes would stay in the same place as your eyes all night. Also, communicating would be difficult because people would have a hard time hearing you through that big white mess. People may be attracted to mysterious costumes such as Zorro, but if you’re planning to dress up as a white ghost to give off a mysterious vibe, forget it. Besides, the whole getup is really not that scary.

Outdated characters and icons

Always remember to stick with the times. Unless you’re dressing up as a timeless character like Captain America or Don Vito Corleogne, do not bother going to a Halloween party dressed as your favorite but outdated character. However if you really want to dress as a character from the ‘60s or ‘70s for example, make sure that the character in question is cool enough to be considered timeless. Remember though, only a few icons and characters managed to reach such heights. Jar Jar Binx may be your beloved Star Wars personality, but for everyone else, he’s a washed up character. The extended list of pop culture icon no-no’s include: the Scream guy, Jason, Freddy Kruger, Neo or Harry Potter—among many, many others.

Forget the "Backwards Man"

This has failed 100 percent of the time and yet a lot of people still do it. The Backwards Man gained popularity within the uncreative bunch and those who get last-minute invites to a Halloween bash. When you look through your closet in an effort to find something remotely resembling a costume and failed, this is when you decide that it might be clever to wear a perfectly regular and normal outfit backwards, from your cap to your jeans. Never do this. Contrary to "popular" belief, this is absolutely not clever. It’s boring and unimaginative. Choose to dress up as the Backwards Man and you’ll be a mocked man at the party, guaranteed.
