My eighteenth birthday is coming up soon and I'd like to have a Lolita party for this, but no one that I know in person even knows what Lolita IS. At any rate, what do you think I could do to encourage my friends to get into it? Would YOU come to my birthday party?

And, my idea for the venue was the Garden Gate tea room in Mount Dora. Is a 45 minute drive too far, in your opinion, for a birthday party? If it is, what're some Victorian-style teahouses you know of in Orlando?

My birthday isn't until May Thirteenth, but I like to plan ahead.

[rant] Buahaha. I have to have time to actually buy Lolita clothes, first. Thing is, I have always been interested in Victorian things like literature, decor and lifestyle, but only recently (six months or a little longer) really gotten into the Lolita lifestyle. I figure 8 months is a long enough time to come up with some Loligarb, right? [/rant]

Thanks for reading!

The thing about "Lolita Birthdays" is that it's a tricky balance to strike between having fun and making your guests uncomfortable.

It's your day and you should hold the event your way, but at the same time it's unfair to expect your friends to change their fashion or lifestyle to suit your whims [because lolita is not just a one-day-affair if you're going all out; it takes time, consideration, and serious research, not to mention a good deal of money]. Your friends may not be willing to go along with that, so just bear that in mind and don't get upset if they decline.

You can certainly still have your tea party, just remember that your friends may not be interested in dressing up [or at least in dressing up full blown] to attend.

Also, I personally would never invite strangers from the internet to my birthday, a very personal event, just because they were into the same ruffle-butt dresses as me. Not only would it be awkward for them, as they wouldn't know my other friends, but it would be placing undue expectations on them as guests due to the whole It's-My-Birthday thing.

Keep the party close and personal; I really recommend saving the lolita aspect for a more convenient time, and just sticking to something that you and your friends will both enjoy and remember when it comes to your birthday. If that means you want to wear lolita, wear lolita. It doesn't have to be the focus of the party just because you like the fashion or lifestyle.

I suppose you're right. A tea party would still be fun, even if I'm the only person there dressed up. Thank you. : D
