It occurred to Dean that Anabelle was not a very talkative girl after they had been sitting at a small table in the bakery for a good five minutes. She seemed intelligent enough, always looking around with some sort of curiosity in her grayish eyed gaze, but she didn't like to talk much. This was rather at odds with Dean, who felt like she'd been nattering on for hours about what she was doing at work with the little girl like she could really understand.

"Are you going to finish that cupcake?" Dean smiled and pointed to the pastry she had bought for her daughter. It was a chocolate one, piled high with white icing, and Anabelle had taken exactly two bites out of it. A dab of white icing had taken up residence on the tip of the girl's nose; Dean wiped it off without comment.

Anabelle grabbed the cupcake and slithered off her chair. She walked over to the counter (tripping only once on the way) and stopped at the counter to stare up at the cashier. Then she smiled brightly and said, "Hello. Are you alone?"

The little girl put her hands on the counter, cupcake with them. She was barely tall enough to reach. "You're lying," said Anabelle. When she had come in with her mother, she had heard someone, and not this lady. Her eyes narrowed a little, and she stood up on her tip-toes as if trying to see over the counter.

"Anabelle," said Dean from her spot at the table near the window - she was smiling widely - "Don't bother the lady, it's probably another worker."

That didn't cause Anabelle to desist at all. There was someone. She wanted to see them. She backed off, taking her cupcake with her, and started to look for a way around to search the back of the store.
