Vergil inspected the tidepool by the water's edge with a keen eye. His wings flared out behind him as his concentration increased, trying to find what he was looking for...
"What's going on, kiddo?" Reuben asked him, following behind. "You have any ideas for your summer project yet?"
The songbird shook his head, eyes still riveted on the small pool, watching the creatures scurrying across it. "We have to do something about ecological systems and how they work in the world. I got the food chain."
Reuben nodded. Yeah, made sense for his kid to choose the option that involved eating something or cooking it. Ever since he'd gotten Verge that Easy Bake Oven, the kid seemed enamored of all things cooking and seemed to find a way to bring in one of his "creations" for the class, whenever he had a project.
He had a feeling that he knew what Vergil was thinking for this project, but he hoped it wasn't true...

The day had begun young and early as the small girl's eyes fluttered to life. Her mouth opened wide with a yawn and her arms stretched around her. It was morning, the deep pond was still dark but as she moved about her eyes adjusted to the light. The sea was dim in the early morning and only around noon was it the easiest to see. Moving about she pushed the floating sheet she used for a blanket under a sea shell right before her 'tail' sent her swimming into the sea.
As her body swam past the threshold she noticed many of the younger creatures already swarming around with life and she smiled. It was a young, brilliant day today. Floating around for a moment Aeriana gained her bearings before she swam off in a random direction. She had no chores to attend too and Meredith was busy gardening for a neighbor today so she was free to do as she wished, unless her Guardian randomly showed up.
Moving around a smile spread on her face as she darted through the waters. Her voice spread around her, singing a young melody as she swam. It was the tune she'd learned only a while ago, a lullaby Meredith had called it. Such a pretty melody.
As she swam she neared the surface and moved about just below the waters surface. As she swam she noticed two figures hovering over the water and at that moment she darted a little lower looking at them curiously as her tune was cut off. "Opps..." she whispered, slightly wary of her mistake.

Vergil gasped, stepping back hastily from the water's edge. He retreated to where Reuben had set up his beach chair and poked his guardian in the shoulder urgently. Reuben, who had been trying to figure out where in his book he'd left off last, was not amused.
"Verge, I have to read this so that I know what questions to assign for my AP class when they read it." He said and the his manner quickly changed when he saw the expression on his songbird's face. "What's wrong?"
Vergil shook his head. "Big fish." He swallowed. "I was looking for shellfish or something small, but there was this huge fish staring right up at me! It was this big!" He exclaimed, holding his hands wide.
Reuben cocked an eyebrow. "We're a little too close to shore for anything large to be living around here."
But Vergil would have none of it. Eventually, sensing defeat, Reuben picked himself up off the chair and walked over to where Vergil said he'd seen the fish. Both grey-haired man and songbird stared into the water, waiting.
After a time, Reuben ruffled Vergil's hair and said, "Looks like it's all clear now, kiddo. Call me if it comes back." He went to sit back down by his towel, leaving a suspicious Vergil to stare at the water's calm surface, waiting.

Aeriana however deep beneath the water looking at the shimmering light that sunk below into the waters deep as the blurred figure vanished. Her eyes blinked curiously as her mind tried to recall the things unique appearance. "Hmm.." she whispered again seeing the figure. No one could be any more dangerous than Meredith so why not. Smiling the small figure flapper her tail a couple of times and spun around hoping to look her best.
Nodding she took one quick flip at the surface and in an instant her head popped out from the water looking at the boy who met her eyes. He looked older, and the guy behind him looked like Meredith. "Hello!" she chimed her smile widening over her face.
The boy seemed nice, and the man behind him seemed unconcerned. So there was no reason to worry- yet.

"Aaah!" Vergil cried, so shocked to see the thing reappearing that he lost his balance and fell into the water himself. Spluttering and flailing about wildly in his surprise before remembering how to swim, he gasped for air as he stared at the strange creature beside him.
Reuben, who had been halfway back to his towel and beach chair, ran back to the water's edge on hearing Vergil's cry and the subsequent splash. He was about to dive him in himself, but it looked like his kid was alright. "Thank God for swim lessons at the Durem YMCA." He said to himself, so relieved that he hadn't noticed the other person in the water.

Aeriana looked curiously at the other as the wind sifted the waters surface around a bit. She retreated a few feet at the other's cry and hid between some reeds. They moved around in the wind, and she was obviously still visible, but it felt safe. Safe enough from the screaming monster, why how odd he looked. All- normal and stuff, like Meredith. Even the older guy, so odd.
"You look funny." she teased looking out from the reeds, blinking her eyes a few times.

Vergil whirled around, spraying plantlife that had latched onto his wings everywhere in his efforts to stand up. "Who are you?" He asked, voice calmer. It looked...like a girl. "Look funny?" He commented back. "I'm not the one with stuff on my face, popping out of nowhere and scaring people." He stuck out his tongue.
Reuben, meanwhile, having just been hit in the face with a piece of seaweed, rubbed the slimy thing out of his eyes just in time to see Vergil sticking out his tongue at a girl. He rolled his eyes. Typical.
"Verge, be nice. Don't be mean to people you've only just met."
Vergil frowned up at his father, eyes flicking back between the girl and the Reuben, trying to see which one would be the most dangerous.

"Stuff on my face?" Aeriana questioned. She never thought anything was on her face, besides the weird blinking things that closed and made it dark without her wanting them too. 'Eyes' her guardian had called them. Strange things, very strange indeed.
"I don't have anything on my face and I don't scare people. I just- didn't know who you were, so I came to see. Besides no one besides my momma ever comes to visit- everyone avoids me."
Smiling she floated around Verge a bit and poked his wings. "Can you fly?"she smiled, she could, but only under water.
(Sorry for the response, school ate me.)
