I was just watching Silence in the Library, and when she said that she had been to the end of the universe with the doctor... well the master's ring was picked up by a female hand. Maybe the Master became a woman?
Okay looking back it does sound pretty silly, but then again so does "Daleks verses Cybermen", or "Doctor Who meets Torchwood meets SJA, verses Davros and lots of Daleks".

My theory:

River is a Companion, probably 11th, who is either a.) formerly married/engaged or b.) a hidden Time Lord (best guess, Susan or Romana).

As for the whole Rani thing, my money's on Donna or the Master's wife.

I don't thing susan would "date" his grandather, but the Romana idea sounds believable.
Also, when M's ring was picked up ypu hear the female cackle. It sounded old, and Rani-like. Didn't sound anything like Lucy or Donna.
