do you seriously like a guy that arrests any opposition politicians and has tries to restrict free speech?

thats just anti-socialist propaganda. He is one of the most popular elected officials of all time. No matter how much the CIA tries to screw with that country, like disrupting elections, starting riots, planting evidence of corruption....those people still re-elect him again and again. I realize that the rich ex-landowners that lost out when Chavez nationalized the Venezuelan oil fields have been a bit more vocal than the average, perfectly satisfied citizen in the majority who keeps voting for him again and again, but seriously, America has done more to restrict civil liberties in the last 10 years than Chavez has done in his entire tenure.

I could have sworn all dictators(and yes he no longer has term limits so he is) get re-elected in landslides every time. and you got the planting curruption backwards, a good number of the major opposition politicians strangly end up being arrested for curruption some have to flee the nation. yes the US has done some stupids things with our civil liberties over the past few years but that doesent make it right for venezuala to do so, the nazis got most of there euthenasia ideas from the United states's progressive era it doesent make it any more right
just to say "well look what we did"

the opposition leaders that get arrested for corruption ARE corrupt. They get arrested because they take money from the CIA and attempt to fund rebellions. We are not talking about political discourse here, but attempted rebellion. Do you honestly think that someone who attempts to bribe an election official should not be arrested?

and I wasn't trying to excuse anyone's behaviour by bringing up the US's failures. I only meant to put it in perspective. Its easy to throw around terms like human rights abuse and dictator, but even when we are most critical of ourselves, we never go that far.

well lets compare to other of the past, most all dictactors either come to power via democratic election or a coup, he did both. they pick a target group alienate it, accuse it of being part of some conperiscy, then finnaly try and destryoy it, just like his crusade against the media going as far as to acuse " that the owners of these networks have primary allegiance not to Venezuela but to the United States, and that they seek the advancement of neoliberalism via corporate propaganda." Hitler did it to the jews and the khmer rouge did it to the intilectuals. that is straight out of Saul Alinskies playbook in "Rules for Radicals".
just like hitler, he and his party came to power via democracy after a failed coup then made their positions life longall while using a target group to unite their county against.

I love it when other countries fail to follow the US model, they get compared to Hitler.

First of all, Hitler targeted an ethnicity/belief system to otherize (one of the many flaws of National Socialism)

Chavez survived coup attempts and oil strikes, and then refused to renew the broadcast license of the media organization that cooperated in both attempts to remove him from power. I hardly think this is comparable to a pogrom against an entire race.....

its not that he following Hitlers model but that they both follow the same general radical left model. Saul Alinksi wrote about it in rules for radicals. Im not acussing him of hitlers same crimes Im acussinghim of being a radical that follows the same way of hitler to unify people behind him. and I dont care if a country doesent follow the american way provided thats what their people want. but I think in venezuala people cleary want their county back from chavez. the khmer rouge blamed the landowners for all their problems that didint make it true.

well hell. if thats all you meant...those have been the tools of statescraft for a thousand years. You don't have to be a radical. The national hero combination + otherism is something that pretty much every country does.

and look at the results when radicals apply that model.
Chavez is sorta like huey long, just as corrupt as they people he went after.
PostPosted: Mon Oct 19, 2009 4:26 am

yes lets look at the results.....the rich are slightly less rich and the living contition of the peasants (which far outweigh the other category) has imporved immensly.....OH dEAR! OH MY! how tragic is that? why that is exactly the opposite of us where the Rich profit at the expense of the poor......
