Wow!
Don't think I'd want that on anything less than a 5 foot poll. The shock of the round going off along with the recoil of a .50 caliber round would be as potentially lethal to the person holding this as whatever he or she was trying to fight with it.
Not a smart thing to do. I'd be happier with the .357 or the .44 magnum.

Hum, this must be one of those "bad ideas" I'd heard so much about.

Good Idea; A rifle that uses the entire barrel to absorb it's recoil by making it slide back and forth.
Bad Idea; Turning a small rod into a .50 cal hole punch.

OberFeldwebel Good Idea; A rifle that uses the entire barrel to absorb it's recoil by making it slide back and forth. Bad Idea; Turning a small rod into a .50 cal hole punch. They once made a single-shot pistol that did that. The entire barrel and action were on a rail, and firing it rolled the entire weight pistol back on hydraulic shock absorbers; the trigger, guard, and grip were the only things that didn't move. They chambered it in .50BMG, and it was reviewed by a svelte woman who said she found its recoil "manageable". It was called the Triple Action Thunder, and it is pure badass.

Ober was talking about the Barrett system.
