And connecting doesn't necessarily mean acting. Austin wasn't the only one who acted like an exaggerated form of himself. Others such as The Rock, Chris Jericho, Mick Foley, and Eddie Guerrero did the same thing. They started out with scripts and over the years eventually just went out there and did their own thing. Bret Hart and Chris Benoit were not very talented on the mic, but they were great at telling a story in the ring, and that's why they were loved by the fans so much. As Paul Heyman put it, you have to hide the negatives and accentuate the positives.

Yeah but I didn't just mean on the mic you have to be able to sell moves. Hart and Benoit were great champion is many respects they probably would have been able to win the titles even if it was scripted because they were good technical wrestlers. And they were able to sell moves. But Benoit who wasn't very good on the mic and very rarely gave talking promos acted like himself the people who were close to him such as Rey or Chavo said he like to keep to himself he did as you said connected to fans by the way he wrestled. The Rock, Mick, Jericho they didn't need a persona to be created because they had the greatest persona a wrestler can use themselves. Just like HHH when did he truly become amazing after he dropped the Royalty get up and joined DX. The guys in the attitude era didn't need scripts as much as nowadays because they all had their bad-a** selves normally. Every wrestler you named is either left wrestling, or have met their fate too soon and was more popular aropund in the attitude era. Now were not in the attitude era what getting back to the 80s big persona larger than life. Look at Cena and Hogan ther are some big similarities.

But at the end of the day it's all up to Vince. He could point at any wrestler backstage and make him world champion. If he really wanted to he could make Hornswoggle a five time world champion and have him main event Wrestlemania, and all that guy does is run around and dance. Knowing this, I just can't take a "who's the greatest champion?" discussion seriously.

But Vince wouldn't Vince is a very smart investor. And he wouldn't do somthing that isn't going to make him money.

He made Kahli champ though... gonk

So that once Undertaker gets the title again he would be even more popular. Isn't that the point of heels? To make face superstars look better.

Regardless he was a heel. Heels are there to make the story interesting and boost the Face star's popularity.
