Okay I have a question. In my house we have a deep fryer. Now I heart French fries and fried okra as much as the next person but you see, despite the OIL being a vegan peanut oil, my family cooks fried chicken in this deep fryer(vegetarian in a omni house), and it's not like they replace the oil every time they fry something. It's like the veggie burger being cooked on the same grill as meat burgers scenario I guess.
ANYWAY, would it be hypocritical to eat french fries that were cooked in the same deep fryer that chicken or other meats were previously fried? i'm asking this because generally, vegetarians/vegans look down upon veg*ns that eat candies with gelatin, buy soap with tallow, etc. Would eating fries cooked like that make us look like"bad vegetarians" or like we have sticks up our asses and that it's super difficult to be veg*n, making it more difficult to educate people or help people become willing to make a lifestyle change like going veg*n.
This is an opionated question and feel free to comment. 3nodding
Edit: I asked my boyfreind and he said no, so I just clicked no for my vote cuz he dosen't use gaia,LOL.

I do fill that you would be hypocritical. My daughter is vege and I eat meat and she will not eat anything if we fried meat in it. If she wanted something that had to be fried I would give here own special pot that would only be for her. And Even thought it is a pain in the a## for me I make the effort to do that for her b/c that is her belief and what she wants to do and I support it.

*finnaly a reply!!!* But yeas, now that I've asked around to various other people, I do realize it would be hypocritical, and I now pan-fry my food seperatley. 'w' I use a tiny pan, makes just the right amount of fries for me!!! and texture-wise they are 458153560836580 billion times better than out of the deep fryer. thanks for your opinion tho!!! 3nodding

FYI: If you've ever bought fries from a restaurant, chances are very high that something non-vegan has been fried in the same oil, possibly at the same time as your fries.

I'm tempted to say it depends on why you're a -arian
I have my own reasons for saying "No." but I can easily see others feeling it's wrong.

I'd go with the stick-up-the-a** theory. However, I also personally wouldn't use the deep fryer with the same oil used to cook meat.
The ruling principle here, I think, is that people are as veg as their lives permit. On a sliding scale of no-honey-vegan to meatitarian, some might put you a notch closer to the latter, but if you're aware of this, then all is good. You are not directly eating the meat, nor encourage it. If your actions of eating french fries, etc, are independent of the meat-frying, and would otherwise be veg if it weren't for others cooking with the same fryer, then you're on solid ground, my friend. Not everyone needs to be a martyr.
On a last note, which is in line with Photon Fiend, your veg paradigm is important in determining a yes or no answer.
Lastly, I'm glad you resolved the issue.
Now, just pray that no one criticizes you for using pans that have been used to cook meat with! wink

As has been said, I think it depends on your own reasons for being veg*n.
I personally, would not think it hypocritical. I'm vegan for ethical reasons, in an attempt to cause least harm and contribute positevely to the world. The oil would be there, having meat fried in it, whether or not I came along with something vegan to fry. The separate pan is a good solution though, especially if things turn out better tasting anyway! biggrin
On the purity/hypocrite note, making a fuss and having a negative attitude about the situation would only serve to distance my friends/family from veganism and make them less likely to consider the lifestyle for themselves. I believe in setting a gentle example, and in these sorts of situations, I make an effort to be grateful for any attempt people make to accommodate me, not nitpick every little detail for its vegan purity. My boyfriend's family is always making me food, and they try so hard, and it is NEVER completely vegan, but I thank them regardless, and give them a new recipe to try instead.

I wouldn't do it, but I don't think there's anything wrong with it. It's not like their fried chicken is going to be made more dead because of it.
If you're doing it for health reasons, I wouldn't do it. But if it's about animal welfare, I don't really see that it's a problem. Nothing is suffering more, nothing is dying, and it's not like you're contributing to factory farming or anything like that by cooking in the same oil....

I think yes. I mean your goal is to not eat animal products...and well that oil has been contaminated with such, and you know, it's not an accident.
but to each his/her own
personally I couldn't do it. My stomach is soo sensitive...

okay, I didn't quite get what you were saying, so I'll just say this: if you're using the same oil after the chicken has been fried, that's nonveg because there's chicken juices in the oil. if it's just the same deep-fryer.... you shouldn't really care if it's been washed. But that's just MY opinion.... just some advice

Woah, this thread has grown after my leave of absence! eek
Thanks for the replies!
And note that I cook my food separately from that deep fryer anyway! biggrin
What's REALLY gross is now my dad has taken to making pork rinds, and the oil gets all over the counter. *shivers*

Well I don't eat things which are cooked/fried in the same water/oil as meat, but I do understand that sometimes it can be really hard living in a household where meat-eaters are. I thought about that some time ago too, and I came to the decision that I wouldn't want to eat it, 'cause I'm feeling sick of the idea that something of the meat could be in the oil and then on my food, don't want to have meat in my stomache talk2hand BUT, I don't think that you are a hypocrite out of this, not at all, 'cause you're not killing something throughout it, are you? You're family "killed" the chicken, not you, so why feel bad about it? Unless you get sick of the thought, I think you shouldn't make yourself feel bad about something like this, you're already making a change through not eating meat smile
