I've been to GI Joe, D9, and Ponyo of late. All were rather fun.

GIJ I found to be rather cheesy, and almost silly, but I wasn't nearly as disappointed as I expected to be. I've been a big Joe fan since I was a kid (MilBrat, whatcha expect?) and had been hopping up and down about this movie since I saw the preview at Star Trek.

Spoilers! Highlight with mouse to see it.

Some elements of the story made me twitch. The past romance between Baroness and Duke, for one.. but when they revealed that she was being controlled, it made more sense.. though it still felt like "Convenient Plot Device Here".

The largest WTF moment was when they revealed who Cobra commander was. Also convenient, it worked.. but it just didn't entirely make sense why the good american solider would turn into a global terrorist. Because he can?

All this aside, it was a fun movie.

D9 was a fascinating story. But very, very messy. I have no complaints on this one... though I have no real specific praises either. It was well executed, for all that it feels like a short story stretched out over two hours.

Ponyo. Ahhh, Miyazaki. I have the same love of Miyazaki as I have for most masters of animation (ANY master of animation). I'm not an otaku, I've learned, though not for lack of trying. My love of cartoons and comics started in america, and it still seems to remain here. But, I digress....

It's a colorful, high spirited film about a little... goldfish/mermaid creature that a young boy names Ponyo. The closest analogy I can find is it's similar to an adaptation of The Little mermaid, with some hints of evolution, higher exsistance, Primal magic, and love of Ham.

Overall it's very simple. It really feels like it's made for a very young audience (Our heros are five. ;3 and we see them alot). There's no real danger posed to the kids, and the ending is happy. Princess Mononoke and Spirited Away this is not.

But it's right up there in Value, I think. The animation is, as ever, skillfull. His backgrounds are colorful and beautiful. And his characters are vibrant and loveable. :3 Basically, if it's in your town, go watch it.

*sniff*sniff*

You saw Ponyo? crying I've been waiting for that movie to be dubbed for three years! I heard about it in 07, saw that it was finally in theatres last year in Japan, and now it's in the States! And on the big screen too!

If this isn't on the Oscar list for best animated film I will go psycho b***h. Only one anime film for the Oscars so far! If there's two and by the same amazing man I can live happy!

As of late I've seen The Cowboy Bebop movie. I was really really impressed. It didn't take on the Julia story it followed a brand new one that really pushed every great button they couldn't on tv. The looming sexuality, some cursing, more explosions, and the BEST music they could compose. The theme, Knock alittle Harder is to die for. One of the best anime movies I've ever seen.

Is there a second bebop movie? I saw one in theaters, like... five or six years ago. ;3 I even owned it, but it disappeared after I went to Iraq.

I have the subtitled Ponyo. I'm not a fan of most Disney versions of the Studio Ghiblis but at least it gets the movies a mass audience.

Oh but they're so well done!
This one has Cate Blanchett, Matt Damon, Cloris Leachman and Liam Neeson!! The casting is so amazing!
And although I hate that they casted future Disney mind slaves I love that they put children in for Ponyo and Sosuke instead of some 20 year olds with a little kid voice.

I don't think they changed the lyrics to the songs though, I hope they didn't. With the littlest Jonas and Cyrus I fear who dubbed the song. The dub for Mononoke was beautiful and in Porco Rosso the restaurant song was amazing.

The ending song wasn't dubbed, was it??

I do admit that films like Naussica had a horrible dub and Totoro I wasn't really too fond of, but some were quite good. Kiki's Delivery Service had to be my favorite.

It sounded english... But I'd stayed up for nearly 24 hours by that point. The only phrase I remember was "the little girl with the round tummy".

It would make sense, though... given the demographic that Disney was likely targeting, I doubt many would understand japanese.

I guess I'm more a purist as big stars just don't make it better for me. I guess it also doesn't hurt that Japanese is a second language in my house.

I can understand purist. I've gotten into a love affair with dubs though, finding the bad ones and the good ones. I love the works of Funimation and I love voice actors. I don't just look at english work though. I look at shows in spanish, german, russian, and hungarian. Thus far I find that German sounds and dubs the best.

Think of it this way. When anime was first being introduced into America it was impossible to find in subs and there were few tapes in the first place. When lisceasing companies started mass marketing shows for anyone to relate to fans wanted more and the best shows were the ones that started staying true to the original script. There then were conventions were people could view anime before it was released, make connections with people who knew where to get stuff.

In countries where anime isn't introduced in their media and into their own languages the production inside there is very very low.

I do agree that the mass media anime is not dubbed well buuuut the anime isn't that great either, is it?

In all forms of media there is good and there is downright shitty, but that there is good is the important part.

Dub vs sub is hit or miss for me. I tend to like dubs simply because it's nearly impossible for me to simply sit still and watch something. Even to movies I generally take a bag that has knitting in it. I never complete anything, but that's not the point.. it keeps my hands busy and staves off an empty "i'm not being productive" feeling. So, I tend to like english language sounds, because my eyes are probably not tracking text

When I get into a kanzashi making fit, I can watch fansubs, since I'm at my desk anyway, are generally looking at the screen as I glue petals together.

Mmm.. wanna make flowers...

Maybe I'll do that as my next "freebie"... designing kanzashi's based around avi's...

I rented two movies this past..day. Tekkon Kinkreet and The Place Promised in our Early Years.
Both had amazing animation.
Tekkon had great music, Early Years not so much.
And both switched in that quality when it came to the actors. Aaron Dismuke plays the character White, most famous for his role of Alphonse from FMa, and it's safe to say that he is a horrible VA. I hate his work, it's bland and boring and misses out on the cute factor. The rest of the actors were not good at all. The japanese cast wasn't the best but it was better and easier to listen too.

I have no idea how either movie ended though because I stopped watching basically halfway through. The stories were.....bad. Kinkreet has a better line and was easier to watch but it didn't have the full element of "ooh, what will happen next". It was a dragging of weird after weird, I like weird but it has to make some sense.
Early Days was....boring. Very boring and so very flakey. The beginning is good but it's confusing after that. The whole tower thing was too unbelievable and didn't draw me in one bit.

Early Days had an amazing script though. Kinkreet was alright.

Let's see recently I have seen Food, INC. , The Princess and the Frog, and Kinky Boots.

Food, INC. Is a documentary on the way food is produced in America (Specifically the meat industry). it is an eye opening film that may make you never eat meat again. A word of forewarning you probably will not want to watch this film during or immediately after eating.

The Princess and the Frog is a great film, although one's sense of reality will probably need to be suspended. I love the soundtrack, and found myself singing along to the chorus in the movie theater (it was empty except for my friends and me)

Kinky Boots is a great film, but not for everyone. Essentially a guy inherits the family shoe factory only to discover people have stopped buying the kind of shoes they make and the company has gone belly up. In order to save the factory (and the entire town from being unemployed) he teams up with a drag queen to create a line of kinky boots that can support a man's weight.

The two movies I've seen lately have been Avatar and Sherlock Holmes.

First up, Sherlock Holmes was great. biggrin Wasn't absolutely-amazing, knock-my-socks-off, but I really enjoyed myself during it. I couldn't say that I had a favorite part in the movie, but it really was good. 3nodding

Now Avatar, Avatar was AWESOME. Seriously, it was just....aaaaah! I loved it! If you have not seen this movie I would highly suggest that you do! It is a fantastic movie! *goes off on a tangent* lol Trust me, you don't want to here me ramble. wink
