When Nahuel and Eshaa left for the dig site in the morning, Orli and Nat found themselves with some time to kill. Orli was familiar with public transportation and was eager to show him all her favorite places around Durem. First, they went to the coffee shop where she tended to lurk late at night when she couldn't sleep and got hot cocoa. Then she showed him around the park, and was a bit dismayed that he didn't seem able to walk as fast as she remembered from last year.
After stopping for a bit of lunch, Orli took Nat to her favorite shop in downtown Durem. They sold model kits and comic books there, and she hadn't managed to get there in a few weeks.
They'd just gotten a new shipment of space plane models that caught her eye as soon as she stepped inside. All thoughts of her grandfather were forgotten - Orli was glued to the display case. They were so pretty! She wanted one!

Miles stepped into the hobby shop in downtown Durem, and took a quick glance around. It'd been a while since he'd been here, and then he'd only come to get a bottle of crazy glue. Today he had more important matters. Like buying himself a 'congratulations for saving your mother's life' present.
Then he spotted something. These were new, he'd never seen ships like them before. Of course, if he had been with Josh, his cousin would have helpfully informed him that he was looking a pirate ship. The ship was displayed in a case, with the price underneath it. $1000 gold. Yikes. Maybe next time. He decided he would wait on that ship, while he glanced at each item in the display case.
"Orli?" He asked, blinking. He knew her by name only, because of his friend Fish. The girl was on the other side of the display case, looking at space planes.

Orli looked up at the sound of her name. She looked around for a moment, unsure of where it had come from, and then recognized the boy at the far end of the case. Or at least thought she did. It had been dark the last time they'd met.
"Miles?" she asked, squinting at him. Yeah, she figured it was him.
"Hey," she said. "See anything you like?"

Miles moved so he was closer to Orli, he had only just barely recognized her as it was. "Oh, I like the pirate ship," he gestured to it, before giving a shrug. "I think I'll wait until Christmas though, and have it on the list of things I want. Maybe my aunt'll get it for me, or something." Well, Thali was known for getting grand and expenisive gifts, though Miles somehow doubted that she'd ever been into a hobbyshop--unless dragged there by Joshua.
"What about you?" He asked with polite curiousity. "I saw you looking at the starships, you interested in those or something?"

Orli nodded enthusiastically. "Yeah," she said happily. "I want to be a space pilot."
Maybe Nat could pull some strings for her and get her into fleet academy...
She looked at the model pirate ship for a bit. It reminded her of Ranza, and she didn't really want to talk about that. It wasn't so much that she was upset or offended that her sister had left, though. She was just through with her. "It's okay," she said uncertainly.

"A space pilot? Cool. I bet you're---" he paused, and frowned slightly. Almost as if he was confused; an unusual expression for the oracle. "Are you glowing?" He looked closer at his friend for a moment, while trying to not appear rude--which was difficult when it came to staring. He was both staring and trying not to stare; awkward much?
"You don't like pirate ships?" Miles asked with disbelief. He had always thought pirates were the coolest thing ever; not unlike the obsession most boys his age had with cars. "I wouldn't like to be a pirate though... Pirates don't seem to have many friends. I think they must be lonely or something--I mean, they even maroon their captains..."
Pirates just weren't very nice.
"I think I'll be a teacher," he said finally. "A good one, that every kid likes."

"Yes," said Orli, and sighed like she'd been over this a million times (she had). "I thought we established this at the beach," she added. "I glow. It's my verb. It's what I do. It's good for finding stuff without turning on the light but it makes me awful at hide-and-go-seek-in-the-dark."
Whenever she was it, she would inevitably wind up playing for hours until someone took pity on her or she ran fast enough.
"Pirate ships are my sister's thing," she explained offhandedly. "I like spacecraft."
She looked Miles up and down appraisingly. "You'd be the young teacher who all the girls have crushes on? Like on TV?"

"Yeah, but I bet it's really handy when you play Green Ghost. You need a flashlight when you play that--it's kind of like Sardines, but you don't hide until someone finds you. It's like a hide-n-seek-tag-in-the-dark," Miles explained before realizing he was rambling. She probably didn't want to know about Green Ghost anyway.
"I like pirates and science fiction," Miles said with a nod. "Like Startrek. Spock is so cool."
He blushed at her next question, and shook his head. He didn't see girls like that yet. "I wouldn't like to be that kind of teacher..." He muttered. "Just a good one."

"No," said Orli, "I'm pretty sure I'd be awful at that, too." She was pretty much guaranteed awful at any game that involved the words "hide" and "dark" in their description.
"I saw that movie," she nodded. "It was pretty cool, but I don't want to fly big ships. I want to fly, like, fighters and stuff. Like in Star Wars." She gave him an appraising glance and a raised eyebrow that seemed to demand, You have seen that, right? Between herself and her siblings interests, Orli had by now seen just about every major Harrison Ford movie ever made.
She let the teacher thing drop. Miles couldn't help it if he was still in the phase where he thought girls had cooties. Orli herself had only a passing interest in the male gender as of yet, but that sort of crushing seemed to happen in movies often enough.

"But--oh..." Miles started, but seemed to think better of it. Maybe she would fail at Green Ghost--if she was the hider. But the seeker! She could do that... But still, he didn't say anything. "Oh, Star Wars! The Millennium Falcon, you mean? I bet that'd be cooler to fly than the Enterprise, yeah. In Startrek, you can't fly solo... But in Star Wars..." A smile crossed his face, and he nodded at her.
"You know, I think you'll be an even better flier than Han Solo," he told her seriously. "Not soon, though." He flushed, and offered her a smile. "But maybe someday." He couldn't be absolutely sure with her yet. "Do you want to buy something, or are you just looking?" He asked with vague curiousity.

Orli took a glance over her shoulder, making sure Nat was off looking at action figures or something before saying, "Not like the Millennium Falcon. That's a freighter. I want to fly fighters. Like X-Wings."
She pointed to a small model to prove her point.
"Like way back when people would do solo flights over the atlantic to just prove they could," she said. Never mind that some of those people hadn't been totally alone. Amelia Earheart had had had a navigator, but damn if she wasn't still cool.
She hesitated over the question of buying a model. "I would like one," she said finally, "And my great-grandpa's here with me, but they're sort of expensive."

"X-wings? Even better!" Miles said, impressed. He had never thought of that, a girl wanting to be a fighter. "But the X-wings always had a squad, if I remember right. And a flight leader." He paused, frowning slightly. "So I mean... They weren't really flying solo, were they? Unless you count the time Luke had to blow up the Deathstar... But that was only because everyone else had gotten blown up, I think. " It'd been while since he'd actually watched Starwars.
"I'd like a model too," Miles admited with a nod. He gestured to the pirate ship he'd been gazing at earlier. "I think I'll save up my gold for it, though. I don't have enough yet. Or maybe I'll ask for it for Christmas."

"Christmas, right," nodded Orli, although her mind was already wandering elsewhere. Holidays weren't such a big deal in the Cooper household, although they got gifts mostly because everyone else did. He'd missed her point on flying solo, but it didn't really seem to matter.
Miles was Fish's friend, she reminded herself. Not necessarily hers.
"I think I need to get going," she said as means of an exit. "I meant to show grandad around the rest of downtown."
She had already begun backing away. She pulled her goggles down over her eyes. "Well," she said awkwardly. "See you at school."
