___.ͼ to have built everything on one frail hope ͽ.__ and to dash that dream away{ Lt. Valerius Saunderly }The Master
Valerius, when young, was impressed by the honor and courage of soldiers in the past, notably his grandfather's service in war. Through his life, he's found that honor is not always the reality and has had to cope with quite a few life-or-death situations in which it seemed chivalry or loyalty played no part. Disillusioned, when he returned from serving with the army, he was much different from when he started.
For one, Valerius seems caught between the two worlds of ideal and practicality. Try as hard as he will to squash it out, a part of him still refuses to give up in believing that honor and bravery for the sake of a cause still exist. Though, seeing Wynander under the rule of Sehket, he's forced to concede that his practical side often has the upper hand.
Though he's inclined to go along with whoever holds the highest position of power, like a good soldier should, Valerius has been questioning Sehket's authority and whether or not he should obey it. He has started taking jobs that are both legal and illegal, more depending on the person offering him than the black-or-white nature of the job in legal standards.
Hardly any other men from Valerius' unit returned to the city. This goes unnoticed by most, as the city boundaries are highly guarded and the people are cut off from the ships. Even Valerius himself isn't quite sure of what happened to the rest of his unit, for his mind seems unwilling to take him back to that point in time. Though, there are moments, often late at night or just after waking, when his brain relaxes its control enough that he gets flashes of memories. He's started to hate crowds and can feel claustrophobic when many people press in upon him, though he's fine in small buildings. He doesn't just understand why...

___.ͼ for all problems out of reach ͽ.__ a way to bring them back to earth{ V. The Hierophant }
Valerius and Sirius share the arcana of the Hierophant. Sometimes referred to as the Pope or the High Priest, the Hierophant symbolizes a connection with the divine as well as pragmatism. :: Symbols :: Pillars: Two pillars stand beside the Hierophant to symbolize dualities: right and wrong, light and dark, mercy or ruthlessness. The Hierophant, though, is between these two extremes, perhaps instructing his acolytes which to follow under what course, rather than always choosing one over the other. Still, the pillars are holding up the system of beliefs, from the ground to the sky, a recurrent symbol in this card. Staff: The Hierophant can be seen as an instructor or someone who's too rigid when it comes to rules, or both. The staff shows how he leads people to the "right" direction, as well as symbolizes authority. :: About :: The Hierophant is all about the Heavenly being made Earthly. For Valerius, the card represents his high ideals about honor and chivalry needing to be adapted to the pragmatic and occasional ruthlessness of war, among other things. For this reason, many aspects of the Hierophant connect the earth to the sky. The pillars surrounding him made up of his ideals and teachings stretch from the earth to the sky; he has one hand extended out in greeting-- though he is a holy man, he knows that divine ideals must have their roots in physical deeds. He is realistic in his beliefs and how he carries them out, though he also holds himself to a higher standard. The Hierophant is meant to be more of an approachable version of the divine. Often, he's compared to the Oracle at Delphi: someone who interprets the gods' wishes on the earthly plane. He can be represented as a trusted teacher or adviser, and is often close to the Emperor in Tarot. Sometimes, though, he can be stubborn and unyielding, and he is often set in his ways. ___.ͼ to twice cross Stygian lakes ͽ.__ you have no idea what you're getting yourself into{ Cerberus } Guardian of the Underworld
A denizen of classical myth, Cerberus was a three-headed dog that stood at the entrance to the Underworld, his duty to prevent the souls who had crossed the Styx from going back to the realm of the living.
The three heads are either rumored to see the past, present, and future, respectively, or are in different stages of aging: one is a puppy's head, another a mature dog's, and the last an aged canine. Cerberus was most commonly drawn in the classical era with a dragon's tail and a mane of serpents, and though the usual number of heads depicted was three (to go along with time) as many as 50 heads appeared on the dog in known art.
Cerberus also loved honeycakes. Aeneas was able to put him to sleep using drugged ones, which the beast quickly gobbled up, on the way to see his deceased father, Anchises.
In other interpretations, such as Dante, Cerberus guards the Third Circle of Hell, where those who succumbed to Gluttony are tortured. Guess he had too many honeycakes.
On the notion of Valerius and crossing the Styx :
When a person has been through some traumatic or horrific experience, one says that they "have been through hell." Considering Valerius' days in the army and his strange past, it seems oddly fitting that after being put through Hell and surviving that the very guardian of the Underworld should be his Actor. But is Cerberus a reminder of how narrowly Valerius has escaped the horrors of his past, or a sign that Hell is just around the corner, waiting for him to see it?

___.ͼ and oh, to traipse those hallowed halls ͽ.__ it's nothing but a deserted relic{ Place of Residence }
District :: Harbor As of now, Valerius currently stakes out the top floor of a looted shop in the Harbor District. There is a window, which he sleeps near to scout for intruders, though he's booby-trapped the lower floor well-enough that if someone broke in he'd hear them before they reached the stairs. The shop was once a merchant's trading post and wax candle shop, selling local and exotic goods to the citizens of Wynander. Since its looting, precious little of the fine wares remains in the shop: one of the reasons Valerius is so fond of it is because it looks so derelict and broken down hardly anyone ventures inside. All objects of any worldly value have been stolen from it already, though, if one looks hard enough, it is sometimes possible to find a candle under a floorboard or wedged between broken pieces of wood.
