JERUSALEM
, Aug. 11 (UPI) -- A young American teen donated $40,000 he received from his parents for his bar mitzvah to the desert city of Sderot, Israel.

Mayor David Buskila said the money will go toward building a playground, Haaretz said Tuesday.

Buskila gave New Yorker Benjamin Sternklar Davis, 13, a prayer shawl as a token of the town's appreciation and promised the boy he would be the first to use the park's facilities, the paper said.

Buskila first met Davis and his family during a Jewish Agency-sponsored visit to the United States last year, the paper said.

The boy's mother, Sarah, told Buskila her son was concerned for the children of Sderot
and how they coped with the fear of Qassam rocket attacks, the paper said.

Sderot is less than a mile from the Gaza Strip and has been targeted constantly by Qassam rockets for the past eight years.

Such a mensch.

And now the question...

do you think Bar Mitzvahs should be used as a charity fundraiser?

"Wow. That is a great thing he did.

Well, did he actually say I want all presents to go towards a donation to Sderot? Or did he wait until after to say what he would do with his Barmitzvah money?

But I don't really see it as a charity fundraiser. It's not. You're just saying that whatever presents you were to receive are instead going towards a greater benefit.

Did I read that correctly?? $40,000??
Oy vey iz mir!
That's... quite a lot. What that kid did was very kind, but why do I imagine his family can afford to do things like that?
