I was wondering if anyone had an opinion on this. I’ve been working on a series called Vampire Haven and I’m trying to find a great name for an island that is uncharted among the waters of Alaska, Canada, and Hawaii. It has mountains, forests, waterfalls, and beaches. I cannot think of a great name for the place. I was thinking Nardia because I have a country that I created known as Narda which was around ten thousand years ago in the area know known as Wales on a planet called Carina in the Comet Dwarf Galaxy. The problem with Nardia is that isn’t too simpler to Narnia and I don’t want to have that problem, can anyone think of a better name that I could use?

I personally would not go with "Nardia." As you stated, it is too similar to "Narnia." Might I suggest looking up the names of cities or islands in those places and try to name it something that sounds somewhat like them? It would make the place perhaps more believable. Another option might be to think of who named the island, and what their naming inclinations would be: When did they live? What kind of language did they use? This might help you come up with a better name. I hate coming up with names for people, because I often want to use them instead. xd

Thanks for the advice. I'll look up names of places then name the island something that sounds somewhat like them.

I decided upon Vampra for several reasons. First, it's a vampire island so Vampra is close to Vampire. Second, it has a certain ring to it in my opinion. And last, it's not something I've seen in any other books. Thanks for your advice.

I'm glad Alanora was able to post and I agree with her.
Want to know what I sometimes do to name a place? I start pondering about either of these things:
1. Is there a person in charge of the place who might want to change the original name of the place to match his/her own? Or, was there a very important person in the past who could have served as inspiration for naming the place after him/her? Maybe the discoverer of said place? 2. Like you pointed out, the people or maybe even the fauna or flora of the place could serve as an inspiration for its name. 3. A huge even that shaped the history of said place could be used to name it. 4. Geography can sometimes be a good idea.
I suppose there might be other ways but those are the ones I usually think of when picking a name for a place. I suppose Vampra is good but if it were me, I think I would rather go with something along the lines of "Islampra" or maybe "Vansladiel". Just a thought... wink

♦ Hrmmmm this name generator may give you some ideas. It's very original. The advance generator is great. (you gotta read the instructions for that though) the generator will create names within the parameters you provided. saaay a random list of names that all have a short vowel/ constant combo first a random long vowel in the middle and the letters "nia" at the end.

this is instructions for the advanced generator (it rather simple really) http://www.rinkworks.com/namegen/reference.shtml
EDIT: For some reason "carnia" reminds me of the carny or something vaguely Coney Island-esque. Caravia (Cah-rAy-vIA) or Caravian (cAH-rAy-vEEan) are different enough that it doesn't make me want a hot dog and funnel cake..... ♦
