A small girl sat on a bench at the shoe store, kicking her bare feet lightly. She made no move to get up or explore, though her guardian was elsewhere.
Daddy had told her to sit tight. He was looking for shoes in the next isle over. Daddy had told her so, and she was a good daughter who obeyed her Daddy.
...It was awful boring obeying Daddy.

Perhaps a few feet away on the same bench was a young boy who looked pretty fed up with the whole situation.
It wasn't that he didn't like shopping, or even that he was bored of sitting there with his bare feet touching the doubtless germ-laden floor. He did like shopping, and he could probably have sat there for hours and never gotten bored. Really he could have. But it was just... Carlisle frowned and shifted so he was sitting cross-legged on the floor. There wasn't anyone here to talk to, except that girl on the other end of the bench, and he wasn't to move until Aunt Bella got back with a pair of sneakers or penny loafers or whatever the heck was taking her so long to look for. And that left entirely too much time to think about the things other people had said.
It would be much better to talk to the girl. He liked girls, or that Myriad thing made him think he did, who knew? Anyway --
"Er, hello," he said, brushing some of his dark hair behind an ear. "I'm Carlisle - what's your name?"

Minerva jumped a bit, startled out of her thoughts by the question. For a moment, her mind whirled in circles as she thought of what to do. She'd been asked a question. It would be polite if she answered. Daddy would like that. But Daddy told her not to talk to strangers, so he wouldn't like that.
She turned her head to take a look at said stranger, and any worry melted from her body language. It was just a child. A pretty boy, as harmless looking as could be. Minerva tucked her feet up into her dress.
"Hello, Carlisle." Minerva smiled prettily, eyes closing as she bobbed her head. "I'm Minerva. Has someone left you alone as well?"
There had been no adults around, either. And he was barefoot! So he must be shoe shopping too.

He tilted his head at the body language he was reading. Why would she be frightened? Carlisle had been next to her the whole time... Perhaps she had been caught up in thoughts of her own, and he'd interrupted?! For a moment, his entire body froze and he looked rather horrified. The last thing he wanted to do was frighten a girl!
Then she looked more... natural, less '!!', he would say if he could properly express the emotion he was thinking of. "No," said Carlisle, watching her carefully just in case he said something wrong again, "I'm not alone. My aunt is not too far away, I think she's just over the next aisle. It's nice to meet you, Minerva."
