So, the four commanders, the ones who were pioleting and running the whole operation, were discussing how best to apporch the planets. The grunts, also known as the four who would do the actual search and rescue, were told to rest and prepare. Your boy decides to take a nap and dreams...


Gauken grumbled under his breath as he was dismissed, and went to his quarters. How could they do this to him? Why did he keep getting these losuy jobs? going searching for a bunch of bsentminded doctor doolittles. He chnaged into sleep clothes and flopped onto the bed. And on a backwater little rock like earth. the aliens didn't even have the desancy to look like aliens. how boring. how plain. He flopped into bed and closed the lights. He closed his eyes, reeady for one of his usual angry dreams. for some reason they alwys started with him on the slpe of an active volcano. When he was lucky he woke up before it errupted.

"No, I'm not," she agreed with a giggle. Safely on solid ground, she leans forward to peer into the volcano. "This isn't one of those "sacrifice a virgin to the fire gods" dreams, is it?"


"Nah, usually I'm the one that gets sacrificed," he said with a chuckling, wondering what in the world he was doing.


"Oooh, so a nightmare," she nodded sagely as she glances around until she finds a pebble. She picks it up and throws it as far as she can. "So what, bad day? Eat something bad before you crashed? Or just self torturing?"


"Please... do not say crashed..." he said weakly. That would eb just what they needed, to crash on this backwater rock. "Nah...this is fairly typical. I almost always wind up here, long as I remember. And I pretty much always know I'm dreaming too."


"Brava. Not many realize that, you know," she hunted for another rock to throw. "Even when you tell 'em, 'hey! You're dreaming!' they just keep on going and ignore you. Kinda annoying but sometimes kind of fun."


He chuckled a bit. "You're an odd one. Didn't know I had this good an imagination."


She grins at him. "Shocking what the mind comes up with, huh?"

"Yeah, no kidding"

"Well obviously I'm here for a reason." Finding another rock, she throws it. "Any theories?"


"My mind telling me to grow up and get over her?" he asked with a sigh as he flopped back against the volcano slope

She claps lightly. "Very good! She's really not worth it, you know." She sits next to him, spreading her skirts around her as she pretended like she knew what he was talking about.


He sighed heavily. "If you say so...." he shook his head. Did he really want to get over her? Well here was his subconscious saying yes, plain as day.


"I don't say so, you do. Otherwise I wouldn't be here, yeah? Hurts though, huh? Hard to let go of someone you cared about..."


He nodded. "She was the first girl I ever..." he shook his head. "Why am I telling you all this... you are me. You know all about her already. I just... can't believe

"That's harsh... pretend I don't know and tell me about her?"


"Oh you know... she's pretty. A lot like you, but her eyes are different... stormy gray with those lightning flecks. And her hair has more curl.... but... She's amazing. So graceful. She and I met in the academy, but that life wasn't for her. she'd rather stay home then deploy.She said she'd wait for me..."
