Ok, for my final speech, I need to give a speech to persuade. As a topic I have come to a very thoughtful decision to use the fuss over the removal of "In God We Trust" from currency.

I am very strongly against that. It would be just wrong. After the research I've done, it is also my opinion that to do this would be to go against what they are using as a basis for it's removal. The first amendment. (SP, I'm tired)

What I am asking for is your comments about the subject. Any feelings you may have, please feel free to express them. Keep in mind that everything will be used as research for this speech. It is worth 2 grades...

Also, please be honest. If you don't know much about the situation, then say so.

Now come on... you can't vote like that and run. Please tell me what you think. Please... confused

Well, I voted remove it.. But I don't really know anything about the situation. I do have some thoughts though, but I'll have to do a little research first to make sure that my opinion is based on what I think it's based on, and that I'm not misunderstanding the issue ninja

Ok, I do greatly appreciate any input you may have. I am trying to make this my best speech yet. I have such strong feelings about this issue. It is going to be difficult trying to keep it all within a 7 minute time limit. But I want to go at it with as much truth as I can compile. As well as detailed facts.

I don't really know any of the background with this argument, but I think it should stay. I believe the number of people who don't believe in God are not that numerous. I know that the majority that do believe in God, may not believe in the same God, but there is no specific God represented on any money, it simply says 'In God We Trust' I see no problem with it.

I also think it should stay. What harm is it doing being there. I also agree that there are way more people who believe in god than those that do not. Why change it now?

I read a little about this, and I stand by my vote to remove it. Mostly because I don't think it's right to force religion on people in any way. There might be more people who believe in God than those who don't, but even if the non-believers is a minority they should still get the same respect as those who are religious.

That said, I don't think it's a big deal if they keep it. It's something that's been around for a long time, and it's not hurting anyone. Personally I am an atheist and I wouldn't like it if they decided to put something like that on our currency, but if it had already been there for a long time and was concidered a national tradition I probably wouldn't think twice about it.

I don't think it's forcing religion on anyone. It's just something that has always been there. I don't feel it needs to be changed and what the big deal is.

I voted to remove it. While personally I don't truly care either way, I would vote against keeping it.

The references to God were not added to currency or the Pledge until the 1950's when Communism was the big government scare. Because Communism doesn't believe in God, the government felt the need to ad God wherever it could to deny Communism and everything it stood for.

I am firmly religious, never even questioned my faith in a Supreme Being(s), but I still think that having references to God in any way allows for the Religious Right to push it's agenda that the US is a Christian country. Unfortunately, we cannot add the names of all the gods worshiped in the US because that would be ridiculous. Again, I think the word God in and of itself is harmless. It's the people that have corrupted the word and being for their own gain. This is why I'm against having references to any supreme being in anything run by the government--including money and the Pledge and public schools.

I think that just like every other highly controversial topic, there is never an easy answer. It's not clearly cut, and no matter which side you take, you can never please everybody, and people will always object and get their feelings hurt.

I think that if they removed it, people would object and get their feelings hurt. I think if it stays, people will object and get their feelings hurt (as is obviously already happening, otherwise it wouldn't be an issue.) This topic stems from the whole separation of church and state issue. While it's a good thing that our country started allowing freedom of religion, and those oppressed people could then follow their own paths, a lot of people's own paths still followed the traditional christian religions. I think if the numbers were calculated, there would be more christian american citizens than of any other specific religion, (although if we lumped athiests, agnostics, and some of the new age non-labeled ones, like me, it might be close.) So it MIGHT still be accurate to call the US a christian country (above any other labeled religion anyway.)

Still, the people who really think our freedom of religion and separation of church and state was a good thing that our country has used to make it what it is (and I agree, a lot of freedoms have made us what we are) want to strike out any specific references to religion on everything strictly US, like our currency. It is a well-based intention, to preserve our freedoms, but then those who like what In God We Trust stands for will object and get their feelings hurt.

I'll stop there. As I said, highly controversial topics are always complex and never have an easy answer. It's a good thing to discuss them though, and to try to understand all sides and aspects of them.

(BTW, I didn't vote, as I take both sides)

I want to add that any comments made in this thread are not, I repeat, not to be taken personally. This is for my research and would never want anyone to get hurt by something said about this. Please if there is something you have to say, do so. NObody will take it wrong. (RIGHT?)

Ok, now on with the discussion. It is hard to hear when so many people say that our nation is a Christian based one. I have found sooo much to prove otherwise. Now granted that we have our roots based there, but by no means of the word does it qualify to be labeled that. I will continue after class....

Thank you for letting me debate this out. This speech is very important. If I get enough details and info for it, I plan to use it to compete with...

Ok, I actually have sat and thought about this a few times, and I've had conversations with friends about it.... I have a few views, not only on this particular thing, but on alot of the things that have been removed or talked about being removed.

Personally I think it should stay.
PostPosted: Mon Nov 28, 2005 6:56 pm

Please feel free to express those views. Nobody will get upset or hostile for it. I would like to hear them. My communications class has really been something to enjoy. I didn't think at first that it would be. I am learning a lot about myself and others by the way they express themselves. And here I thought the class would just be about giving speeches...

I voted for leaving it there. It has been on money since before my time and although I am not a Christian, I do believe if something is working, there whould be no need to fix it.
The religious right (as with any extremest faction) will do what they are gonna do no matter what. If it is there, they can claim it is because we are a country founded by Christians (also not entirely true) and if it were to go, that would just give them something else to draw attention to themselves. Extremist factions are just that way whether they are right, left or groups who believe in space men, when people get extreme, they will probably get inflamed easier.
Again, I feel if it works (which apparently it has for MY lifespan +++) then there should be no need to fix it
