Hello everyone.
Yesterday I went out for a trail ride. I haven't been able to get out there for a few weeks, so I expected to end up a little sore. But since I have recently sold my horse, I was using one of the trail horses. The horse I usually ride is named Lola, a 15hh Standardbred mare. She's beautifully smooth, and generally a really good horse to ride. However, Lola had already been snapped up by another rider by the time I got there, so I was put on Remington, a cute little paint gelding about 14.3hh.
Remington is a nice little horse, except his shoulders are quite a bit more upright than ideal. He behaved very well for me, especially considering he hadn't been out in a while. But whenever I cantered him, he has the most AWFUL gait! His walk and trot are fine, although they are different to what i'm used to. (Remington has short legs xp ) But his canter was so rough and jarring it was hard for me to keep my seat at first.
So I tried switching leads, but that did nothing, on every stride I pushed him forward as strongly as I could, but it didn't have much of an effect. It was a fair bit better when we were going uphill, but still not very good.
Do you guys have any suggestions for me, if I have to ride him again? I'm really quite sore this morning :S

It sounds like he does the Ay-rab bunny hop canter (despite being a paint - pinto maybe? lol) Anyway, I would work on collection and rate with him if he were mine. Bring him into a nice western lope then back out to an extended canter. Work on all transitions, in fact. Sometimes it does help a horse to extend when you ask him for an all out gallop b/c his previous riders may have been in his face and afraid to let him canter, thus making him afraid to extend his neck, p/u the bit and soften his shoulders.
I don't know if any of that babble made sense. I was at the ER until late last night w/my daughter. That's a story for another day though. lol

Actually that did make sense XD Thank you! Come to think of it, he was a bit smoother when he hit top speed... he might actually have some arab in him, he's got a small head and high head and tail carriage. Hope you guys are okay. :S
