My first child (a girl) was born March 2nd, 2008 and we're expecting a boy this December, around Christmas. I already have a second crib, a new mattress on the way, all the basic toys and what not, and a cousin who's youngest boy just turned 2 is donating all her boys clothes so I won't be needing anything really. A few family members agreed that it would be cool to have a party for family to get together to celebrate the new baby, and two have suggested a Diaper Party, where guests bring a pack of diapers for the baby in various sizes. What I'd like to know is, is this kinda tacky to ask for diapers so soon after my last child? It's not really tradition around here, as we usually only have 1 party period. But more and more of my friends are throwing a party for every child. What should I do?

Do it. After all, everything is so expensive anymore that you might need a little bit of help.
If someone tells you its 'tacky' or 'selfish', tell them you feel like celebrating the life of the child you almost lost by having everyone bring diapers. I mean, its not like they're going to spend ten bucks on anything really important anyway. Haha.
And congrats. I'm so so happy for you that you didn't lose him.

Thank you. It was really a shock when I saw a baby on the monitor. In fact, I cried so hard I didn't look at him after the first glimpse of his heart beat. I still feel like it's not possible, and I think it won't be real until I hold him.
I'm passing the idea around family members on Facebook to see what they think, but my husband's Aunt and my mother both agree it would be cool.

I know you already have a child, but its an amazing feeling, isn't it? I can't wait to see pictures when he's born. whee
I think the idea would be cool. I might do something like that for my next one. 3nodding

My SIL just had a baby shower for her second child. She has a daughter and will be having a boy now. All of the clothes she could have passed down were for girls. She's not financially bad off, but she could have used a little extra help. That and she needed a crib because the crib they bought for her daughter was the grow with her kind.
If some one is willing to throw you a baby shower then I say let them.

Thank you all for taking the time to answer my question. I can't wait to share photos of little Ben.

I'm really late in responding, but I say definitely let them throw you a shower! I've been to diaper showers for other people and they are usually casual and fun. Plus, what's more useful than diapers? If you're doing disposables, you need a ton of them in different sizes. If you're doing cloth, it's great to get a variety of diapers to try. heart
