Daedalus' House...

Daedalus
A bright, energetic little monkey, who's obsessed with astronauts - he wants to be one more than anything. Is very attached to a stuffed bunny rabbit from his previous mom. He loves Legos, Skittles and the Space Channel.

Salamander
A crazy girl with wings growing out of her head. She lives in an apartment near her university with a bunch of wacky creatures.

Technetium
An almost-emotionless, brilliant Mendel who's a fierce observer. Somewhat fond of Daedalus, or at least more tolerant with him than usual.

Pica
A ferret-type Brannon gargoyle; really hyperactive and mischievous. Loves to play with Daedalus.

Skull Monkey Journal

Daedalus is adjusting really well to his new home! He looked pretty freaked out for the first couple days, hugging his bunny and not talking much (very out of character for him, from what I've seen since.) I managed to entice him into opening up a bit by getting my Mendel, Technetium, to show him NASA's website on my laptop. Now he is really looking up to her and following her around a lot, and bugging her to him more spacey stuff. He likes watching Star Trek and Stargate SG-1 too. And, he's a very energetic little munchkin, always running around and playing with my extremely hyperactive Brannon, Pica.

Now! Just to get him to come to the SM HQ to play with more monkeys his age.

Daedalus has been getting along aces with Pica and Tech. He still gets nervous and a bit confused pretty easily, but overall I'm really impressed with the little guy - he's doing a good job adjusting, considering the circumstance. I've still only been able to convince him to go to the SM HQ once, and there were no other monkeys in the playroom, from what he tells me.

He has discovered my crayons and has been drawing tons of pictures of spaceships, planets, stars, and constellations. It's exhilarating to see such an interested, bright little guy. Pica loves to scribble with the crayons too. I'm thinking about taking Dae to the big park outside the city to look at stars on a clear night, sometime soon.

I finally found some time to pay attention to Daedalus, since Technetium has been playing babysitter during the day. I decided to have an evening out with him, for some quality bonding time. We drove to the park outside the city and set up a blanket near the lake, where we could see the stars. Dae waded into the water a bit and had a hoot splashing around and chasing the minnows. We lay on the blanket to dry off and eat cookies, and he asked me a million questions about the constellations, even though I could only point out the big dipper which he definitely already recognizes. He ended up falling asleep sprawled on my stomach on his back, which was just about the cutest thing ever - even though my shirt got all wet and skunky from all the mud he'd gotten into. I bundled him into the car and he slept soundly all the way back to the apartment. All in all, a successful night.

I had a brain wave while he was snoring away on my stomach; I had constellations painted on my ceiling in luminescent paint when I was really little, that soaked up the light during the day and then glowed in the dark at night. I am definitely going to a crafts store tomorrow, and I'll get Pica to distract him while I paint the bedroom ceiling with the Northern Hemisphere in the summer. I bought him a star atlas that has all of the hemisphere skies in it... he'll just be tickled pink. Or green!

Whoo, I've still been really busy, but I managed to think of a way to get Dae out of the house long enough to put my ceiling-sky plan into action... I sent him and Pica out to pick blueberries in the ravine near us. I didn't think I'd get any blueberries out of it, but I knew they'd be amused for hours horsing around.

After I shooed them out, I got to painting... let me tell you, it is a royal pain standing on a step ladder, squinting with your neck craned back dabbing paint over the WHOLE CEILING while constantly checking the guide. It took, like, two and a half hours and I think my neck is permanently deformed, but I finshed well before the two rascals got back. When Daedalus crawled into bed and I turned off the light, he just squealed with happiness at the sight of the stars. Success!

The little guy really isn't so little anymore, he's acutally pretty big. They grow up so fast! I'm full of cliches today! I still haven't convinced him to go to the Skull Monkey headquarters much and socialize... he prefers to stay at home with Pica and Technetium and I. That was okay when he was little and adjusting to his new life, but I think it's really about time he met other monkeys and was around more males! As soon as I'm settled back in school, I'm dragging him in.

I've been at school a lot lately, but Daedalus is having a lot of fun. He enrolled in a web-based Astronomy course at the university I attend, and he's loving it. Technetium keeps him company while he does his reading and homework, and he watches the NASA channel online whenever an event is happening. He's made friends with some of my friends' crazy creatures, and plays around with them quite a bit, but I still haven't had time to drive him to the SM HQ cause it's a bit of a hike away.

Since I'm always busy, I'm going to get him to start writing his own journal entries from now on - he's certainly old enogh to be doing so.

September 28, 2004

Hi hi! Daedalus here. Sal told me I had to start writing in this log, about anything that interests me or comes to my mind. Well, space and astronauts really interest me!! So that's what I'm going to write about.

The people who are making the first serious try at winning the X-Prize are going on the first flight tomorrow. I'm so excited to see what happens!! Even if skull monkeys can't be proper NASA astronauts, this might let someone like me go into space anyway. It would be the coolest thing in the whole world! Someday, I'll do it. I want to learn how to be a pilot so that maybe someday I could drive a commerical spaceship like SpaceShipOne in the X Prize. My sister Technetium showed me how to play with a flight simulator on Sal's laptop so that I could start practicing. I want to go to flight college... soon!

Um, that's all I can think of right now. Salamander just bought me a movie about Apollo 13 so I'm gonna go watch it! Bye bye!
