Well there is no simple answer to your question because applying theory to your solos is like applying structure to creativity. You just have to learn where those sweeps and other techniques COMPLIMENT your solo. Don't just throw them in where ever with out reason or rhyme. One thing that I do to help me with this is I'll make a simple melody and keep adding to it, once I have a decent starting point I see where I can spice things up a bit with out over doing it. Then it goes on to rearranging and stuff like that. But then again that may not work for you, because you are not me and you don't have my style. Its a learning experience.

What I do is record a backing track of a certain chord progression. Then I'll take a relevant scale and solo over it. I keep doing this until I get a good enough feel for the track and then I start adding more advanced techniques to my solos, like tapping and etc.
After a while, you'll be able to feel what needs to be put into the solo based on the track. If you wanted more of a challenge, slow down your playing in the middle of the backing track, changing dynamics really helps your sense of rhythm.
