That sounds exactly like what mine is. We started off with drill charts. We set more than half the show with that. Then my director starts with this revised show, and we have to download that off the webpage. Now it says stuff like: "0.5 steps inside Right 40 yd ln | 11.0 steps Behind home hash.

He did that because a lot of the other instruments had to be moved. Drumline hasn't changed yet, but we haven't set our changed parts yet...DX

My band marches with 'coordinate sheets' now.
Little squares of paper with coordinate locations for each spot for that song.
So everyone in the band (sans section leaders) gets three. One for each song.
Officers get the full out drill chart along with theirs so they can help their section get their form right.

Yeah, we use drill charts, and on our parking lot we use for rehearsals we lay tape down on our spots with the number of that page and write down the general location in small notebooks =P
Pretty simple and very effective if you ask me.

we use both drill charts and those damned little pieces of paper. our BD tells us to glue the little oones in our dotbooks so we won't have to carry the drill charts on the field. i don't understand why, though, if we can just write the dots with pencils using the drill charts in our dotbooks. kinda stupid.

I can't say your BDs way is completely out there xXUnhappyEndingXx. Our band uses dotbooks that we fill out our self with the exact same coordinates they give us on a piece of paper during band camp :/ Our BD even told us at the beginning of the season we would never see what the forms would look like unless we were lucky enough to see it from one of the leaders on the chart (or in my case get bored easily and looks at the form when they repeat the same thing twice). .__. And to me dotbooks with coordinates like "12 feet behind front sideline 3.25 steps outside 45 yd line" is much more helpful than a chart.
I guess in you case it just takes some getting used to :]

Wow, that sounds really confusing...

How we do it in my band is everyone gets a booklet with a grid of the football field on each page showing all the formations. You look for your own dot on each page and then draw in the path you take from formation to formation in order to get to each of your spots.
So we do use coordinates, but rather than the numbers being written out you just look at the grid for that formation and say, "Oh, I'm two east of the 45, 12 off the hash " or whatever.

We first run the show without instruments, using our booklets, and then we mark our music with our directions for when we run it with instruments.

we have those peices of paper you were talking about and a drill chart. when they're used together, they're really handy.

Wow, I don't think I could ever do that. xd It helps me so much to see what the form is supposed to look like, so I can know that I'm definitely right, can help other people find their dots, stuff like that. And we're constantly adjusting to the form when we march, because there's always gonna be at least one person who doesn't hit their dot exactly, so it takes some adjusting to look right...I don't know how we could ever do that if we didn't know what the form was. xd Whatever works, though. Like you said, I think any way works, it just takes some getting used to.

here, each individual member has their own coordinate sheet that for each set says something like, "4 steps left of 50 yrd line, 8.5 steps from home side line" for example.
then each section leader has that, and also a set of drill charts, which show each persons "dot" for each set so that you can see each individual formation, and it also says how many steps each move is and other information that we might need to know.

it works pretty well, and it's easy to understand.
