Do you like remakes?
  sometimes
I wish people would think of new ideas once in awhile
It's nice to see good ideas being reworked with modern technology

We're seeing this happen a lot in films, tv shows and video games. Do you think it's a good trend or a bad trend?

Personally I think a lot of this trend comes from people being too lazy to come up with new ideas and/or trying to capitalize on the success of the past as name recognition is a better bet than something new.

Personally, I think most remakes are crap and it's clear they were only made for the money. It helps than I don't care much about "modern techniques" and in most cases really dislike them (IE CG graphics). Even in cases where there was a decent director or producer, Like say Planet of the apes, they never seem to come out right.

On the other hand some things have come out beautifully, like the Prince of Persia games. They started with the general theme of the first and then took it in a whole different direction that made for some pretty great games.

So discuss:

What are your thoughts on the practice in general
What are some good remakes
what are some bad remakes

I think remakes can be good if people really put time and attention into them. I'm not against it when people who actually care about the original concepts are working on it. But when it's just made to be a money maker based on name recognition and it's obvious that was the whole intent, I get very annoyed.

Good remake I can think of is Punch-out on the Wii, I really worried that modernizing a game so classic would be a problem, but though I've got some quibbles with it, on the whole it's a great games. Very fun and very playable.

bad remake I can think of Godzilla 2000. Seriously, Godzilla movies are only so enjoyable because they're so terrible, making a high budget one just kind of misses the point.

There are some really really bad remakes out there. Something that should have been left alone. What they are I can't really think of right now.

I don't know how I didn't rant about this before but I know a lot of people love the new Dr. Who series. But for me it was a misstep.

I loved the old Dr. Who because of how cheesy it was, I feel like the newer version might as well be called Dr. Buffy because it seems to be following that same supernatural high drama sort of formula. Which as I said I know a lot of people like, but I totally hate it. It's really ruined the series for me in a lot of ways.

I hate telling people I like Dr. Who only to have them come back with all sorts of things about the new one. It's really disheartening for an old school fan like me.

Kind of like how the movies made everyone and their cousin OMG the world's biggest LOTR fan. Sure the movies are one of the few times a fantasy film didn't misstep and that's awesome. At the time I just wanted to tell people, hey this fandom has been a alive and well for half a century without out you, shut up. I mean I don't mind when people discover things because of new incarnations. I just hate it when it becomes so viral.

Sometimes I like remakes and sometimes I don't. It all depends really.

I hated or rather refused to watch the remake of Psycho. Hitchcock's version is practically perfect. (Oh, maybe I should mention I'm a huge Hitchcock fan.) Sure, there were a few things he would have wanted to change but had to abide by the times, ie the censors. But the remake?! It wasn't so much that they were remaking it. They were shooting the entire film shot by shot like Hitchcock did. Save experiments like that for the classroom. Don't take that to the big screen hoping you'll lure in a new wave of fans because you got the hottest new actor for the lead.

On the other hand, I think Titanic was a great remake. There have been several movies about the Titanic but it wasn't until the 1997 version that Titanic really made a splash. I think it's because of all the new technology that allowed the moviemakers to show more than was ever possible including images of the real Titanic underwater.

I have to totally agree with the remake just didn't have any of the things that made original great. The acting was subpar and the cinematography was pretty blah. Though like you said, the original was practically perfect so even the crew had started with the best of everything, there wasn't really anything that could have made it better/more interesting. All it was going to do was upset fans of the original and bore everyone else. Which is exactly what happened, I really don't see how the producers didn't see that coming.

I can't say much for titanic as I somehow managed not see it (in spite of the fact we own it), I keep telling myself I'll do it eventually, but haven't yet. I think the love story keeps scaring me off.

Same here though I actually prefer the new Doctor Who, I actually know and have seen what Doctor Who was made out from, not like other fans from my school.
I thought that David Tennant's and Chris Eccleston's series were getting close to the borderline of going overboard, but now Matt Smith's era has gone too far for me, and I've only seen the first episode so far...

The re-boot of Doctor who from the old series to the new series, is just simply FANTASTIC!

New Doctor Who is good. However, some remakes of old songs are very terrible.
