Do you think whatever genre of music you listen to defines which stereotype you fit into? Or do you believe that what type of person you are transcends over whichever genre you listen to? Do you think it's right for people to tell you flat out "Oh you listen to rock? Then you must be a rocker!" despite vehemently disagreeing?
For me, I believe musical tastes do not define their "social stereotype", because I know my musical tastes change every so often. (more than it should, actually) For example, one week I'd be listening to rock, and the next week, jazz, and not four days into jazz, I'd switch back to acoustic.
So what dost thou thinketh? (social stereotype is a whole 'nother topic, so feel free to AGREE, DISAGREE or QUALIFY.)

"Nah. I belive some music is extremely terrible but some people take music lyrics WAYYYYY too seriously and they think its describing their life and they believe thats what they should be. That bothers me latetly >_>;;;; But yeah. I listen to death metal but that doesn't mean I want to kill people."

{Sunrise}//(Make me feel life) (Sunset)//{Make me feel love} Depends.
My favorite genre is alternative rock and rock, but I wouldn't call myself a "rocker" or "punk". I also like techno, classical, and (SOME) pop, so I'm just a mutant stereotype there.
What annoys me more than people who stereotype others is people who stereotype themselves. For instances, I have a next door neighbor who's going through his "who am I?" crisis. He has decided he is a skater, and refuses to do ANYTHING that will mark him as a nonskater. He is not an idiot, but he will do badly in classes and avoid reading just so he won't be seen as a nerd.
If anything, I would define myself as a nerd, but it seems like such a bleak and boring life when your sole purpose of living is to fit yourself into a box.

You already know what I listen too. Granted, it's mostly japanese. But in that I like rock, pop, techno, new wave, r&b, hip hop and instrumental.
Now, I do sometimes feel that certain songs do fit parts of your life just not define it. For example, mine and D's song, Joe's "I wanna know" describes how it was for us in the beginning of our relationship. I had dated a real a*****e who was a friend of D's. But he was out to prove to me that he and his friend were nothing alike. He really liked me for me...
"Girl he never understood what you were worth, hmm no And he never took the time to make it work (You deserve more loving, girl) Baby I'm the kind of man who shows concern, yes I do, oh Anyway that I can please you let me learn"
And there's a song by Angela Aki "Surrender" and it reminds me of Jena, her growing up and all I the things I cherish about her...
"The one who gifts you, the one who lifts you She’s the angel in your eyes Tiny kisses and magic wishes Makes the world a big surprise Growing older, past the shoulder When everything seems bright Time just races-changing faces in the light"
But if you live your life by music or towards a certain stereotype then you've got problems. Music doesn't define who you are. It is the soundtrack to life but it doesn't and shouldn't rule your life. That's just my opinion on the subject.

If what was on my iPod defined me, I'd be a scene-punk-weeaboo-redneck-hipster-beatnik. Among other things. My taste in music is very eclectic... and so am I, I suppose. But just because I occasionally listen to Fall Out Boy doesn't mean I'm a scene kid. Just because I like the Dead Kennedys it doesn't make me an anarchist. Et cetera.

i consider myself a rocker at heart because i've grown up with rock music all my life. but i don't really define myself just by my music, and it's kinda ridiculous for someone to stereotype themselves and others based simply on music. hell, it's ridiculous to judge, stereotype, whatever based on anything except what you see from talking to someone or getting to know someone.
i don't just listen to rock music (which, really, is a generic genre in itself), i also listen to bits and parts of other stuff. i like to say i'll try anything at least once when it comes to music. probably why i transitioned into Japanese music a while ago, and why i don't mind happening across other foreign music.

I dunno. I look like a rocker, and most of the s**t I listen to is rock, but the cliched idea of a rocker doesn't really fit my personality.
Also, the fact that I'm a humongous Spice Girls fan, and that I have a s**t ton of techno on my iPod, both kinda put paid to the rocker thing. But if you took one look at me, yeah, that's probably what you'd think.

What would I be? @_@ I listen to everything.
Rock, hip hop, country, techno, classical, even sounds of a rainstorm!
Maybe I'm a beaaautiful, dark, fluffly cloud with lots of pretty little silver linings and giant streaks of lightning biggrin

I don't even know what stereotype I fit into. I have several groups of friends I chill with and I think they're all really different from each other, and I don't really dress in any certain way. I guess my taste in music is the same too. I listen to a little bit of everything.
Though if I could afford to dress like oshare bands all the time, I probably would. Heh.
Anyway, people who try to define themselves through music just try too hard. I've met many people like that and they're just too fake. It's okay to take influence from music, but to live your whole life based on it like it's religion is a bit too much for the pop scene to support.

Well, cuz with me. I take voice classes in college and there's different kinds of singers in that class. they all stick to one genre I guess, most of them. Anyway, a "friend" of mine from that class found out that I knew ONE song from Within Temptation (a rock band...or symphonic metal. don't brick me plz. D: ) Anywho, she started calling me a rocker since she found that out and I'm like...."what kind of genre of music you listen to does not define what kind of person you are." She thinks otherwise. >_> I dunno.

with singers, i find most of the time someone has to stick to one particular genre or singing style. but i wouldn't really know, since i've never taken voice lessons. just call it an observation from a pleb.
if she thinks otherwise, let her. if she wishes to be generally ignorant, leave her be. if she tries telling other people something that you aren't, that's when you step in. besides, knowing one song by one band isn't enough to say someone's a rocker. i know Umbrella by Rihanna, does that make me a...whatever-the-hell-kind-of-music-that-is lover? (hardly, i dislike most stuff like that and i personally think most of the singers in R&B and whatnot sound alike.)
